Underhand tactics - formula companies

Has anyone of you that breastfeeds actualy looked at the advice given on their website or requested any of their leaflets and fact sheets?

It is the same stuff as the midwife gave me so how are they giving false info to manipulate and con people into failing to breastfeed and turn them over to ff???

If anyone makes important decisions on things such as breastfeeding just because they are "influanced" by an advert rather then using their brains then I feel sorry for them.

Cant this just be droped now, the website and advice is there for people who want to use it or look at it and if you dont want to use it or dont need it then move on.

Yes some of the info quoted was directly from the site and it's health professionals equivalent. Much of the breastfeeding information given by the NHS has had to be reviewed in the last few years, my last HV had a diary, pen and posters sponsored by formula companies. Some of the advice on the SMA site is correct, some which is blatantly misleading as highlighted should not be on any of the current NHS breastfeeding literature. Nor should it be given out by midwives or Hvs IF their practice and knowledge is up to date.

Why should subjects which some people find interesting or worthy of discussion be dropped because others aren't interested. Surely those who are uninterested or find it a dreary topic can just ignore the thread?

Haha Sam.. bet he'd love that.

I suggest everyone youtubes 'baby lemon' - bound to put a smile on your face!

I loled so hard that tears came out of my eyes. Thanks for that.

"Artificial feeding"... that comment makes me SO angry.. honey, I hope your milk never runs out, or nothing ever prevents you from feeding your baby yourself - don't feel so smug, hey? It happens to the best of us, and I'd rather my son had this so called artificial milk than suck a dry nipple and starve :(

I don't feel smug at all. I am very lucky and grateful that breastfeeding has gone so well for me especially after my son was born 6 weeks early and i had an EMCS. Very lucky.

As i previously said, artificial feeding is what i am used to and how it is referred to in my area, from health professionals - my son was artificially fed in SCBU for his first few feeds of life because i couldn't get to him. In SCBU they referred to formula as artificial milk.

I cannot help the words i have been accustomed too

Never heard the word being used about formula before this forum, ever and my Megan was in the SCBU. It's always used negatively anyway and I did confirm me as a parent ...I feed my babies cow & gate.

The lemon videos are so cute

Edited my post, I pressed submit instead of preview.

I'd growl at any MW or HV who said that me but hey ho that was just me posting as Mum.

Then why is the advice from this company to blaim then and not the so called experts that put the guidlines out there in the first place, talk about shooting the messanger

Beacuse 9/10 it is not a worthy discussion on either side, it always results back to the whole them and us argument and just ends up upsetting people on bothsides.
Bothsides can be tactless and thoughtless in what they say and how they put it.
Im not saying this about everyone but alot of times the people that find it "interesting" are the people that want to force their oppinions across and thats when things starte to get heated and others lose interest in it.

Just to say I don't think there is anything wrong with calling formula 'artificial feeding' as that it what it is

I think i've heard the term "artificial feeding" not even a handful of times over 2 and a half years of being on the site and we have members from all over the world, must be a "new" thing, i guess with the recent push for BF'ing

To me it just brings up images of force feeding with a tube

why and how do these threads go so off topic and to some sort of formula war? it was about breast feeders being swayed by formula companies with tactics and now its about formula feeders defending themselves as usual. Not one person said anything was wrong with formula yet everyone is throwing sticks in the air about it. Sigh....I dont know. I get the point of the original thread but so many dont.

And again artificial is what you call milk thats not from a human that you feed to a baby, unless of course cows make genuine milk thats meant for babies? Its not an insult its just how it is.

Its only natural for the conversation to deviate somewhat, whats the big deal?

Only made it to page 9 with out getting infuriated by the rude comments about FF.

OP perhaps you should have posted this in BF Support Threads because you are obviously annoyed that not everyone agrees with you.

If I wanted more people to agree with me, I would have posted it there thank you

Plus we agree on may aspects of the debate - I believe all mums should have the right to choose how to feed their bubs, I believe there should be access to information across the board relating to both breast and formula feeding, I believe nobody should be made to feel guilty about their choice not to BF or continue BF or if they are unable.

I just don't believe it's right for companies, who exist on profits made from selling formula milk, to advertise in this - almost subliminal - way.

They are required, by law, to give a BF'ing disclaimer and to not market parents with children under 6 months. But THIS IS CLEARLY MARKETED AT THIS TARGET! Yes, it is their choice but it is underhand.

The experts don't put this advice out there. The current evidence does not support the claims which were specifically highlighted. Until recently these companies were able to perpetuate these myths within the health community, and still do in some countries. They have a website aimed specifically at professionals. All mws and Hvs are not all breastfeeding experts as is often evident in the advice which is repeated on here, their advice is only as good as the information that they utilise to update their practice. The current, up to date literature otoh, should not incorporate this information. If a large company spends a great deal of money to employ 'experts' and purport to be a source of information for breastfeeding mothers then it has a responsibility to ensure that this information is current and correct. Call me cynical but when misinformation is slipped in and the bearer of that information will profiteer from damaging results it sets the alarm bells ringing, especially when that same company is known for misleading advertising in other contexts.

Fair enough but there's always the option to drop out rather than ask for it to be dropped. Jmho.

Thats what this thread was meant to be about nothing nasty.

I'm sorry, that was kind of rude of me. :dohh: It had been a very long night of not sleeping and then feeling very defensive about FF after a few unsavory comments. You of course are completely entitled to your opinion and to make sure your thoughts and views are understood. :hugs:

was just being nosy so excuse me but artificial feeding is being used as a way of referring to formula feeding more and more my midwife told me last week that the new leaflets coming out actually use the words artificial feeding. also if you put it into google it takes you to pages about formula its just like everything else they've changed what they call it people will always call it formula but the professionals are being told to refer to it as artificial feeding x
