Underhand tactics - formula companies

Although, they are all competing against each other, so in one sense it doenst matter if someone decides to use SMA because of their ad /helpline, instead of any other brand. But they should not be sneakily advertising, which is basically what they are doing. (I think we might be back round to the beginning?) There are so many sneaky ways that breastfeeding is undermined. Someone said that 'no one is discouraging breastfeeding', I would absolutely disagree with that, no one makes money from it so although legally it is not seen to be explicitly discouraged, it is still undermined and chipped away at in thousands of different ways. Any number of ladies on this forum who were failed by others in their journey will tell you that.

Last thing i will say about 'that term' ... I've said before, my son was FF'd in hospital and I had it applied to me, yet I didnt find it upsetting (just a bit stark). But it seems that people can't really explain why (or dont want to) why they do. Which is a shame, as I wanted to use this thread as an opportunity to learn a bit more!!! And maybe to quiz my HV or dr next time I see them! But I will duly zip it on that topic now *zips it* - line under!

And LOL at the aptimil polar bear! How's that for neat tactics on their part :haha: All SMA need to do is dress up someone as a gigantic honey monster or something and they're sorted :)

yes it does matter as its a way of promoting themselves which is ILLEGAL.

So?! Im sure we all know someone who does something illegal. Or something that is illegal! I just don't understand what the big deal is. FF's PAY for their milk, so why shouldn't we be able to 'succumb' to the big powers of advertising.

I dont do anything illegal  Breaking the law is breaking the law, i dont care if you pay for it or not... thats totally besides the point.

No they didn't invent it but they carried on using it when it became clear people didn't like it for wahtever reason it doesn't matter why really does it? Some people got upset and another group instead of modifying their behaviour carried on regardless because they don't respect other peoples feelings, why should they have to justify their feelings?

Agree totally here.

Can people honestly say that if they had a friend who FF and you mentioned the word 'artificial' or 'inferior' and they said please don't use it again as it upsets me, would you continue to keep using the word?

Just because we are sitting behind screens here doesn't mean that we can't show a certain level of respect to each other.

I am all for a debate but it can be debated without jibes.

Does no-one want to reply to this post then?

lol, not everyone will reply to every post you make

I know that and wouldn't expect them to. Just wondering why people that are using the words 'artificial' and 'inferior' feel they are unable to respond this post?

I think they've explained themselves on other posts

Funny, I don't recall anyone giving their opinion about whether they would change their wording if a friend said it upset them?

meh! I asked about health visitors and what the do to help formula feeding mums with education on bottles like 60 pages back but never got an answer. That was when everyone was complaining there was no help for formula mums and making bottles, also no help hv was to me with breastfeeding so i was curious.

I got no help with formula feeding from the midwifes at the hospital. I asked for help feeding my LO when she was born as she was struggling to take any milk and I'm still waiting :coffee: I asked the HV on numerous occassions for help and i was basically told 'sorry we can't help with formula'

I hope thats not for me as I don't call it artificial or inferior as I said about 100 times. All my family and friends formula feed and its just formula feeding.

And I do wonder what applebloosom meant by saying seriously to blah there.

Well who are you actually talking to? Maybe direct your posts more at particular people if you want a particular question answered? I can't answer it cos I don't use either word never mind to my friends.

You're telling me you've never even gone over the speed limit whilst driving? Assuming you drive of course.. (Im going really off topic now!)

If I pay for something, I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to view advertisements for it. It's like anything else we pay for.. It's not a big deal after 6 months, so why is it for the first?

If anyone's like me, once you've made your mind up, you've made your mind up! I always knew I was going to formula feed from when I found out I was pregnant! No amount of the midwives telling me that breastfeeding was best was going to change my mind!

Nearly 100 pages all because a formula site was advertised??? lol
I still fail to see what the big deal is and this discussion has been going on for how long?:dohh:

Dragonfly - I didnt experience any BF problems so obviously didnt need any FF advice but when I was being discharged I did receive a pack of leaflets and it had a bit on making up bottles and other things to do with FF. It was a double sided A4 size page and one side was BF and one was FF

A lot of people on here, including me, said that they associate the word artificial with the word fake. Nobody likes to think they are giving their baby fake food. It's as simple as that for me.

I did say before that when I switched I got help of my lovely Mw on how to make up bottles but manly it was trial and error

No one responds to my direct questions either

edit: thanks! That's useful to know leelee. Pertinent to celesse's earlier post about how it's been given negative connotations. Maybe it didnt have, when the health profession first started using it, and they never bothered changing it?

Anyway ... thats just one of the 20 or so topics on this thread, nearly on page 98! Rach27 did you imagine it would be so popular :haha:

Im off out now ... wonder it its still going when I get back :haha:

Where did you get your little formula feeding blinkie from? :flower:

Ps, Jacob is the best name :D!

:O they cant help? wtf? I did ask mine also but she was crap and didnt know what to do but not being able to help you because your on formula? thats not right. I know in the hospital I wasnt helped either and formula feeding mums where as i watched the midwives fuss over them while i tried calling them over as i was in pain.

I understand promotion of breastfeeding and all but cant help with formula? thats not on. If my next baby something happened and i had to use it i wouldt have a clue on how to make formula up to be honest. Sounds confusing.

No, I don't drive lol

Not everyone is like you though, I've participated in quite a few threads started by pregnant mums that have ended in the OP changing their mind and deciding to give BF a go (the most recent is bigbettys thread in babyclub).

Thats not true, they can help. I think you just had a horrible HV :( MWs cant discuss formula at antenatal classes or appointments but HVs certaintly can when they baby is actually born.

So how come it's okay for mothers to be persuaded into breastfeeding and not formula feeding? Apart from the obvious, breastmilk is better than formula milk! Why is everyone so concerned.. just don't understand

I'm sorry but I don't have the time to go back over a 100 pages and pick out certain people. I have better things to be doing.

People on here have continued to use the terms in their posts but I guess they are not able to respond to my post because there is no way they would act like that towards their own friends.
