Underhand tactics - formula companies

I can say that education really matters (not exactly uni degree but what we know about BF and FF and the research that has been done). I would probably not have persevered with BF through all the difficulties if I did not read up on how fantastic breast milk is and how good it is for the baby in comparison to formula. My MSc degree in Biology has nothing to do with my decision as we did not study these things, except that it taught me how to investigate the subject of interest properly, lol.

It entirely depends, IMO, on what your family/local community is like, rather than factors like education etc. I come from a BF'ing family (we're a mix of working class and middle class), my friends BF'ed whatever their ages... so to me that's normal. FF isn't.

So true. I always thought FFing is sth additional. I didnt even know that some ppl exclusively FF. Before giving birth I bought 2 bottles, 1 tin of formula & a sterilizer to FF in emergencies only (when we'r going out for example as I didnt feel comfy about BFing in public). When I went to BFing anti natal class, I thought it was silly as I didnt see anyone around me having difficulties BFing. I thought it's natural & works for everyone.

But it didnt work for me, I didnt have milk, not a single drop. My cousins thought I was lazy & didnt give it a try, my grandmother gave me lectures, my mom cried several times, even my dad had an opinion & went on loading me with food to get my supply. I was stressed out because of it.

If someone told me that it doesnt always work, it would have been easier for me to accept FFing & go with the flow. Now I have experience & knowledge about FFing, I know how it works & when it should be used. Next time I will try to be more relaxed, it it works I will go for it, but if it doesnt, I will go for FFing with no stress or guilt.

There is a lot of truth in this article. I am too tired to comment more deeply than this, but hope others will.

true though,.

I haven't read the 1500 posts, sorry! Really interesting links on this page. I'd never really thought about formula companies promoting BF. I don't really see this sort of thing so it hadn't really registered.

I think a prime example of that is the aptimil advert! It makes me laugh every time i see it, if you notice in the 15 seconds or whatever it is the advert takes about 2 seconds are actually about their product, the begginning is just going on about breastfeeding.
Which is great obviously and its what they're required by law to do, except the fact that they go on about it so much kind of makes it seem like they are on a level with it?
If you ask most people which formula they would say is the healthest they will say aptimil, for no reason whatsoever. The clinical looking box design combined with how they begin a sentance with 'breastfeeding is the best start' and finish it with 'try aptimil follow on' with no clear turning point makes people naturally assume that its 'on the side' with BFing iykwim?
Its very very clever marketing xxx

I agree! It's subtle but very, very effective.

Cigarette companies promote anti smoking in the ads but sell addictive products to make you smoke more.
Anyway, I do believe these companies have a right to advert their products -- I am a FF mom but I also think they should be straight forward about it.

I totally agree, but in my personal opinion I don't think formula and cigarette companies can be classified in the same vein.

Only because one is proven time and again that its addictive, WILL kill you at some point and be very unpleasant for you along the way. Formula isn't in that same area.

But then doesnt that make it worse that they are near enough covered by the same advertising laws?
On both products you are not allowed to advertise on tv, magazines and such and you also can not get any special offers, money off, store reward points.
It somtimes seems as thoughthey are made to be on par with each other and the idea that babies milk is on par with the same advertising laws as cigerettes is discusting, one kills the others can keep you alive, it just seems a bit silly

Example of an advert being misleading again whcih has been banned.

I think this is the second cow and gate one in a few months thats been banned. Last one was the one about suitable for all stages which implied from birth this one was one that annoyed me on the big iron count which I have ranted about in here before because it dosnt matter if your child is breastfed or formula fed their calculator had dangerous low levels of iron which would mean we all needed their follow on milk.

more detailed info on why it was banned for misleading info.

The only ad that I took offence to, rather, that I thought was misleading for formula was the one where the baby had formula and had some sort of invisible barrier around him?

Its since been revised and the barrier isn't around the baby anymore, but I thought that was misleading.
