Will milk come out? What should I do with the milk? Will the colostrum be replaced with more for the baby?

Thanks :flower:

Milk won't come out until after bubs is born, but you may get some colostrum out.

Your body will automatically create more once it's pumped out. I've never heard of using a breast pump to induce labour though...... although nipple stimulation is supposed to help but you would need to do it for a long period of time, like 30 minutes or so, for it to have any effect whatsoever. And even then, it may not work - baby will only come when he/she is ready. ;)

Either way, good luck! Baby will be here soon!

There's a youtube video about using a breast pump to induce labour. Also, for the record, I'm personally in no hurry for little one to be born. Unfortunately though, the threat of a chemical induction in hospital instead of the natural home water birth I've planned is spurring me into trying to get the little bugger out... before my placenta starts to break down and I'm obliged to go for a birth I DO NOT want!

I think someone posted about this a week or so back! I had a bit of a google on the subject and was supprised to find that many lactation experts reccomend expressing colostrum prior to birth, and storing in the freezer in sterile containers! It seems your body will replace the colostrum and provide more for baby! your body will not begin to produce actual "milk" untill after the placenta is delievered!

I guess this would provode very useful should you need any extra top ups for baby and would prevent you requiring formula top ups! I think it can make the uterus contract in the same way nipple stimulation does!

I saw a tv show today where a woman used a breast pump to help bring labour on faster, but that was after her waters had broken.

In my pregnancy book, it says that you need to work on nipple stimulation for a couple of hours to bring on labour, alternating breasts so that your breasts aren't sore afterward. If you do express before baby is born to bring on labour, save what colostrum you produce by putting it in the freezer.

So I tried using my Medela pump as per the You Tube video earlier today to see if it started anything.....nothing so far.

I just want to check, when I was pumping I wasn't producing very much and it mostly just collected around the nipple rather than dripping down.

I know before bubba is born I won't be producing much but is this normal?

You'd think being a second timer I'd have more of a clue but I really don't! lol

Yeah that sounds right to me, you would only get it oozing out at this stage x

I thought so but it's just when people start talking about freezing what they've expressed before birth it made me panic!

I guess everyone is different.

I actually tried out my breast pump yesterday and NOTHING came out, no colostrum, no milk, nothing! Is this okay at this stage (36 weeks)? Does this mean my baby will be late??

I tried my breast pump out and in 5mins I had 1oz out of each boob,

im going to keep an eye on this thread lol im wanting to start my eviction soon lol

I am keeping an eye too, i keep eyeing my breastpump really tempted

Wow... I JUST bought a breast pump yesterday, and last night I was just testing it out to see how it worked

Then I started wondering... Can I start pumping now and saving whatever comes out in the freezer??

Then I was scared to try because I didn't want my boobs to become engourged (I can't spell) or start leaking like alot of women claim happens to them.

I am curious as to whether or not we can start pumping now?

I noticed if I had the pump on low, nothing happened, but I slowly started to raise the pump level, and noticed alot of clear stuff coming out, which I'm guessing is colustrum. But then I totally chickened out/ freaked out and stopped.

I was thinking about this too, but i wont try until 36 weeks x

There would be no harm in freezing what ever you managed to express, I only got a small amount out :(

At your stage though I would maybe hold off until 37 weeks just in case it did bring on early labour.

Feel free to send labour vibes my way though ;)

tried it, and got about 5 oz altogether after a few mins...started to feel sick though so stopped. Has done nothing except give LO hiccups lol

Wow this thread is old

So Joyzerelly, did it work!?!??!
