Saw my midwife today and looks like I need some help. I just turned 37 and have been TTC since April with no luck...oh, and not one +ve OPK. I tried to chart my temp but I never sleep 4 hours interrupted. With my little guy we got pregnant right off the bat...looks like this is going to become chemically enhanced and a lot of work. I am so nervous of drugs and tests and all of the waiting. I have 28 day cycles, I am healthy, don't smoke, dont drink excessively, no caffeine, and apparently am not ovulating. I have never felt so discouraged. Does any know what I can expect with a fertility consult? Will they just throw drugs at me and tell me to come back later? I really wanted to deal with a midwife but I think I might have no choice than to deal with more clinical people...

So sorry to hear that! I think in an ideal world we all want it to happen naturally but if you need a little help then there is no shame in that. I used to think I didn´t want to go down that route either, but as time goes by the idea of specialists who know what is what and can help seems like a less stressful idea than ttc alone for another two years without a baby in sight. It maybe that something as simple as lack of sleep could be affecting your hormones if they can put you on the right track you may not need to go further down the assisted route, fingers crossed. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Sweetheart I feel for you so much, I have three older children two of which I conceived naturally after 4 m/c but with third I had to use clomid for 4 cycles, 16 years on not using any contraceptive and nothing other than horrendous pmt I finally went to doctor about 4 months ago and wAs told I had a hormone imbalance, and was given meds. Pmt became much better and two months later I got a + at 44 ! , unfortunately it didn't work out but I just wanted you to know it could be something as simple as a hormone imbalance so give it a go see the specialist at least that way you've covered all bases xx baby dust and big hugs xx

I was immediately referred to an RE this past June after my FSH testing came back at 28. I'm giving myself a few months using alternative solutions, but I am setting up appointments in the Fall if my efforts don't pan out. I agree with Natsby, don't feel bad. Scientific may not have been an option 300 years or even 100 years ago, but don't feel shame for using all the tools that exist today.

Note: yes, the first thing the RE clinic I was referred to does is offer Clomid. Just beware of the uterine lining effects that can happen!

Well, for me, I had to accept that it wasn't going to happen without the doc and the drugs.
After months of perfectly timed intercourse, regular cycles, good ovulation-with ewcm, it became obvious that I was going through infertility again.

I had a little cry one morning about not getting pregnant on my own and I let the dream of natural conception die. Today I admitted defeat and took my first dose of femara.

I have 3 kids. One is from clomid and 4 IUIs and the other 2 are spontaneous. You can't tell the difference by looking at them, lol. None of them are perfect and I love them all the same. So, if I have 2 assisted conceptions and 2 spontaneous, that's ok. It's better than not having another pregnancy.

I would go with the specialist. Midwives are great for pap smears, labor/birth, and general women's health, but for something as specific as not ovulating, I'd see a specialist. You'll get more appropriate monitoring.

Good luck.

Clomid *does* seem to be the FS/RE's answer to most things! However in my case I was totally ready for that after several months doing research and taking 'natural' supplements...

I think it would be worth having the appointment and seeing what they say, what course of treatment they recommend - but you can always put that on hold for the time being if you want to try more natural or alternative medicine first. Good to know what they think/would recommend though, so you can go back to that later, if necessary.

GL - don't fear it anyway, going to the FS was the most positive experience I have had TTC yet! Very reassuring for me to hear my options...

thanks so much ladies...I had to get off the board for awhile and just close my eyes and turn it off...of course I dream of tons of BFPs showing up on anything and everything I pee on...LOL...you are all right. Sometimes our bodies need help and my husband told me that the fact we even can go to a specialist and have insurance and are able to obtain help in this arena is what I need to focus on. I am still going to try acupuncture and holisitic options on my own...but I do need to see this man to know that my insides don't need a bit of an oil change...I go next Tuesday. I will keep you posted.

My mid-wife did tell me some interesting things today though...that soy isoflavones are more estrogen based than progesterone based and can actually do more harm than good...also that the men in our lives really should be taking a multi-vitamin. She said it sounds silly but it is beneficial to their sperm. Oh...and she said regardless of what OPKs say, if you have a 28-33 days cycle she always feels that day 10 and 11 are the most important to her...so she said just start on day 8 and BD every other day until CD16...why not?

I do have one question though...I will probably have to have the procedure where they run dye through your fallopian tubes...if I am currently TTC, will that effect the possible fertilized egg in my uterus?

Thanks again for all of the kind words...luck and sticky dust to all of you....xoxo

Why cd10-11? I have cycles from 26-31 days, I have never in my life O'd on cd 10 or 11.
And give up on cd16 is also crazy! I sometimes O on cd 19. I'd completely miss the egg if I listened to her.
I think you need to talk to someone other than your midwife. This info you've gotten from her just doesn't sound accurate.

About the HSG, you need to do it after AF but prior to O. That way it won't interfere with any implantation or send x-rays to a developing embryo.

UNLESS you ovulate before Cycle day 9 it should not as they tend to do the HSG between day 6 and 9

I love my fertlity specialist and I am SO grateful to be in her good hands. Embrace it, it's a good thing. You'll get that BFP in no time!

I am 36 will be 37 on Dec. I got prego 2x this year (wasn't trying) one was an ectopic with twins (no tube loss) then again in May that ended in MC. I had DD when I was 32. I also wasn;t trying and got preggo on the BCP (taken correctly), since the MC, I do not think I have been O'ing. I got +OPK on CD15 for a very short time and they were never a true +. I did soy this cycle CD1-5 and started temping. FF put me at O on CD13, so I will let you know if it worked in a few weeks. LOL Even if it works I am terrified it will not stick, again.
I also have been taking my prenatals since the start of my last pregnancy and a B complex as my LP was 11 days max, that did seem to lengthen by 2 days. anyway, if you have to wait awhile for a RE appt, maybe try the soy and see if it helps while you are waiting.

thanks again so much ladies...this board really makes you feel like there is hope...I am going to just go to the FS with an open mind and do what I need to do. We will all get our BFPs.

Its a great thing for sure:thumbup: Its more frustrating trying and it not happening then going and getting help at least you feel like your in with a chance:wacko:

I think it depends on which one you go see...mine was like 2 weeks wait...but then I got lucky with a last minute cancellation :)

Just go as soon as possible cause you don't want to skip many cycles I guess. I knew there were tests involved that can only happen on certain days of the cycle etc...so for us it was once cycle... I mean we still tried on our own of course, but its not like you can go see them and be ready for IVF protocol the next day

Elizabeth, how is it going with all your meds? Are you getting excited?

I actually am going in next Tuesday. I could have gotten in today but I was off of work yesterday for my midwife appointment. I am due to start AF tomorrow or the first so I figure I will see him at the end of my cycle and then be open for tests. What is the test where they inject the dye to look at the tubes? HSG? I am hoping I can get scheduled in the few days after my consult. How long did it take to schedule an appt for that procedure? So many questions. So so many...
