My daughter is nearly 8 months and just wondered if there is any need to sterilise bottles anymore?

i sterilised until william was 12 months old as i think that is the recomendation

I would have thought when they start weaning, they will be all sorts in their mouth so I wouldn't bother sterilising much past then

Edit, I mean finger food eating stage rather than spoon feeding.

i've stopped sterilising recently now we've started weaning:thumbup:

i think i will sterilise if i'm taking a ready made bottle out with us or premaking it tho just to be sure no nasties grow in the milk

I was sterilising LOs bottles - then last week a friend was visiting from NZ and asked could she lend our steriliser to save bringing one over or her mum buying one. I said sure, and for the first day or two I boiled her bottles in a pan of hot water on the stove (she only has two a day), but for the past week and a bit have been washing her bottles with hot soapy water, then rinsing them out with boiling water (and the teats etc) before making her bottle up. We've not had any problems, so when we get the steriliser back I don't know if I'll use it again.

Also, as I was going through the rigmarole of putting her bottles into a pan of water to boil - I popped my head round the door and LO had managed to roll and wriggle her way (she doesn't crawl yet!) to the shoes I thought I had put out of reach, and was happily eating the bottom of them. Makes you wonder what the point is really!!

I know all sorts goes in Aliyahs mouth but i will still sterilise until she is 1 year old x

yes we stopped when we started weaning too, at 6 months. Shes now 8 months and only has two bottles a day now so I just scrub them out using a bottle brush and with hot soapy water and then rinse, occasionally I put a bit of milton in after to freshen them up as milk residue can cause bacteria to breed, but not using the steam steriliser anymore.
We dont sterilise the bowls or spoons they just go in with our normal washing up.
Any toys, I just chuck them all in the washing machine sometimes with a bit of napisan to freshen them all up.

technically 6 month, since all sorts go in their mouths, though i'm sterilising milk bottles/dummy's til he's 1 xx

The guideline is 1 year - this is because of the bacteria left over from any milk residue that can be very harmful. My LO is already putting everything in her mouth but as not everything has tiny traces of gone off milk left on it, I'll probably be sticking to this guideline! x

hubby asked me this yesterday actually, he said whats the point as she is always putting something in her mouth but i still steam sterilise her bottles teats etc but her bowls and spoons i wash during the day with normal dishes, rinse in hot water and use but i still sterilise them every night, even though she has been weaned for almost 3 months now.
