I have heard so many different ideas of what STTN means from the HV saying it is when baby goes 5-6 hours or when baby goes down in evening and doesn't get up till 8am etc.

How do you define STTN?

DS goes down about 7:30-8 in crib in living room with us and we move him through to the bedroom at about ten, sometimes he wakes up and some times he doesn't, either way we feed him maybe 3-4 oz at 10ish and he is always in his cot sleeping by 10:30. Usually he then sleeps till anywhere between 4:30 and 6:30. Lately I have got up a 2-3 times a night when he has still been asleep but fussing like he was going to wake up. Stroking his face or giving him a dummy helps and I'm back in bed in under a minute. Is this STTN? He doesn't wake up but I do. Either way I class him as a great sleeper and feel incredibly blessed.

I think it depends on the age. If they were under one I would personally count sleeping through the night from like 10-11pm-6am but when they are older I consider sleeping from a reasonable time at night say 7 until a reasonable time in the morning say around 6 or 7. My 22 month old sleeps 7pm-8.30am if she woke up at around midnight I would say she didn't sleep through.
However if my two month old slept 12-6 I would consider that sleeping through!

However i think sleeping through is actually considered 12pm-6am regardless of age x

For me, it was when I didn't have to get up and do anything during the night, so when our daughter's last feed or wake-up was before we went to sleep ourselves. We had a few weeks of this (for a bit around 2 months to 5 months, but not every night, just occasionally) and then again around 13/14 months. But she's coming up on 3 now and still wakes once or twice during the night, usually after I go to bed. When it's before I got to bed (10pm), it's fine and I don't mind. When it's like midnight and 3am, it's a bit rougher. I don't go back to sleep very easily, so that's why for me, it's when I don't need to wake up to tend to her during the night.

This question circulates a lot, and yes, it's often considered the 5 hour stint. But to me, if a baby went to sleep for example at 9pm then got up 5 hours later at 2am onwards, that would very much NOT feel like sleeping through to the parents.

I took it as a much larger chunk of time when it no longer meant we "got up" in the night for the kids

Same here, sleeping through is when you get an unbroken night imo x

I consider sttn to be going to bed at x time and not waking again until morning.

I agree! My LO often, though not always, sleeps from around 9 til sometimes 2ish, but then will need feeding for the rest of the night. I definitely don't consider that sleeping through the night!

For me, sleeping through is when I go to bed and not have to get up again until the alarm goes off in the morning!

At the moment DS2 does 8:30pm-5:30am then back down until 7:30am so he's doing a long stretch but not sleeping through

I consider sleeping thru when they don't wake at all in the night . Mine go 6-6/7 and 7-6/7 x

I agree with this age definition. Although I differ slightly on the times - I'd class sttn as 10.30-7am under 1 year. And over 1 I'd say 7pm-7am.

My 3 month old has occasionally slept 6 hours straight - but from 10.30-4.30. I wouldn't class that as sttn, getting up at 4.30 is not sttn IMO.

I would call it sleeping from when you put them to bed to waking up at a reasonable time. My DD slept 12 hours between 7 weeks and 5 months but now she wakes two or three times :dohh: If she slept from 7-5.30 I would call that STTN as it's near enough morning, but if she woke for a feed around or before my bed time I would not class that as STTN.

My DD goes to bed between 7.30-8.30pm and wakes between 4-6am...I class that as sleeping through the night.

Can't believe folk have kids older than babies who sleep for twelve hours. Humph. Where's my 'sleeps for twelve hours' kid?!

HV told me eight straight hours is sleeping through. My girls both sleep approx 8pm-5.30am despite their huge age gap. Suspect baby would sleep longer but big one is noisy and starts shouting about how she wants to get up!

my 9 m old sleeps from 8pm-4am..cries (but doesnt wake up) for a feed at 4..and then wakes up at 7.. i think it is STTN..but waiting for that 4am feed to stop.. urrgh...

For mine it's been 7-7 or thereabouts but I think anything over 8 hours of solid sleep would be classed as STTN

I consider it STTN when the baby/child sleeps from bedtime until they are up for the day, and I don't have to (under normal circumstances) get up to help them return to sleep.

By that definition, my son STTN from 18 months and my daughter does not yet STTN.

People can define STTN as a five-or-six hour stretch if they want, but I cannot understand why you would bother to say your child STTN if you still have to get up! :haha:

My two both had a period between 6 and 9 months when they didn't wake up once since I put them to bed and got up in the morning (they sleep about 10 hours at night, never slept the 12 hours other people talk of). For me that is STTN. For me also STTN is when both twins do it at once :haha: Because one twin lately is STTN, but because I'm up so much with the other twin I just don't reap the benefits :haha:

I can't believe people have children that do this either!! My oldest is 4 now and only recently started sleeping through properly. My two youngest are up what feels like constantly all night. I would happily take 6 hours sleep at the minute

My older two are 11 and 9 and it's relatively recent that they've gathered what lie ins are for lol
