Hi ladies I'm guessing blw is baby led weaning but what is tw? And what's the difference between the two?

Thankyou!!! X

BLW - Baby led weaning. Basically where you give LO what you are having, finger foods etc

TW - Traditional weaning. Basically pureed food on a spoon.

Thanks Hun, what are the advantages and disadvantages of both, I have no idea?

TW gives finger foods too.

Thanks Hun, what are the advantages and disadvantages of both, I have no idea?

I've just been asking about this and am reading a BLW book at the mo. I am really keen to do BLW.

As far as I knw. BLW focuses more on chewing (or gumming) first as the baby explores different textures of food. TW focuses first on swallowing and chewing comes late.

TW if spoon feeding means baby doesnt intially come into contact with lumps so these needs to be introduced later. BLW means the baby learns about bigger foods. Things such as cucumber sticks, carrots (steamed so soft but not mushy), chicken in finger sizes etc.

There are benefits to both but BLW is just more what I want to do as I want Aria to experience the textures etc first. With BLW the LO wont swallow for a good while. Food before 1 is just for fun is my favourite motto!

Oh and BLW isnt recommended before 6 months! Obviously weaning in general isnt recommended until 6 months but some TW can be done before hand whereas BLW shouldnt be started until 6 months or later. With BLW your LO will gag on food as their reflex is still forward in the mouth. This will be noisy and you shouldnt interefer if possible. Chocking is completely different and is generally silent and baby will go blue!

You should pop over to the weaning section as their are a few good stickys on BLW.

It's so hard to know what to do I guess. I was looking forward to making and blending meals for my lo, but maybe it would be more fun and better for her to try blw. Thanks for explaining Hun, it's been puzzling me for a while.

No problem!

If you want to make food for LO then go ahead! You can do both TW and BLW doesnt have to be one or the other. So if you fancy blending some things then thats good but remember you can give pasta, chicken, fish etc without blending it. Basically I am looking forward to Aria sharing our meals and seeing her wee face as she trys something new!

Yeah that's what I am looking forward too as well. I have a while yet but at first glance I'd maybe like to do a little of both!

Actually you cannot do TW AND BLW: since TW includes finger food (like veg/fruit/toast etc), then "purees and finger foods" IS TW..... BLW specifically avoids spoon feeding purees (and so cannot be combined with TW).

There are two ways of looking at the first year: whether you feel nutrition is important (TW) or not (BLW). I wonder what the correlation between type of weaning and STTN is, if any.

It seems a lot of people on here lead more towards blw? I do like the idea of a bit of finger food and puree so I guess I'm leaning towards tw. This is from just a few thoughts this morning, I have plenty of time to research both properly. It's just another big decision that I'm hopeless at making lol!! X

I think though that although BLW and TW are 2 seperate weaning process', if the mummy really wnated to do both she could. She could feed porridge etc with a spoon and let LO use finger foods for other meals.

I'm totally just learning about it as well and must admit it has been the hardest thing to get the grips with so far, so thanks for the infor!

Yes, a mummy can do as you describe, but it isn't BLW - which is a strict (no purée, no spoon feeding process). Read up on it.... I think that you could "pre-load" spoons with porridge and still call it BLW, but if you spoon feed them yourself, then you are going against the whole point of BLW (a bit like being on weightwatchers but gorging on cream cakes at breakfast - one in counter productive to the other).

Read up on weaning and follow your gut.... I think that the most important thing is to do it in a way that isn't stressful for you or LO.

Can anyone recommend any books? I've heard Annabell karmel is quite good? X

The actual BLW book is by Gill Rapley...x

This is the one that I have. We didn't go for it in the end (a good thing because LO was a particularly sicky/choosy baby), but I strongly believe in reading thoroughly around a subject before making a decision :)
