what teas are safe during pregnancy?

You should really be fine with most herbal/fruit teas. The only things you might want to avoid are teas with fennel, licorice root, hibiscus or raspberry leaf. Fennel and hibiscus are sometimes said to encourage uterine contractions (same as the chamomile), but you'd probably have to drink them in pretty heavy concentrations. Licorice root isn't generally recommended in pregnancy except in limited amounts (some licorice candy in limited amounts, but not medicinal quality extract) because some studies linked it to developmental issues. Raspberry leaf tea is great later on, but like other have said, only at the end of 3rd tri.

I've been drinking regular tea, green tea (you can also have these decaf if you want), peppermint tea, ginger tea, nettle tea (great for iron levels!), rooibos, and some fruit teas (lemon/honey, blackberry, cranberry, etc.). Though pretty much anything in moderation and not in medicinal quantities is probably okay. A cup or two of Chamomile on occasion isn't going to cause any harm, but 3 cups a day every day probably isn't advised.

It's totally safe to have up to 200mg of caffeine a day in pregnancy I believe that's about 4 cups of fairly strong black tea? As for safe other teas pretty much all fruit based teas are fine and some herbal ones are but you need to check what those are. Another tea issue that some might not be aware of, drinking cinnamon and ginger tea towards the end of the pregnancy can lead to blood clotting problems and excessive bleeding after the birth I found this to my cost with my second eldest as I was advised drinking tea made from cinnamon sticks and ginger would help bring labour on (he was overdue) I only drank it a few times as it gave me really bad heartburn but I ended up having to have 5 injections of the syntometrine as the place where my placenta came away just wasn't sealing. I then looked into it afterwards and found that cinnamon and its similar relative cassia contains a natural anti-coagulant that is closely related to warfarin, yikes! Xx
Also normal tea is fine in small amounts, ie not like 5 cups a day lol :-D
I think it is important to remember this!!
You can drink tea and coffee in moderation.
Otherwise we can all drive ourselves a bit mad:wacko: with over worry!!
I had not heard about risks herbal tea...

Maybe this will help.

I'm avoiding herbal teas because like taking herbal supplements, there haven't been enough studies to know what the effects are. I'm not willing to risk it.

Decaf black, non-herbal, teas are acceptable according to my doctor!

Just an update - I am still having the preterm contractions, although they do seem better controlled on the progesterone. I doubt they were/are caused by the chamomile tea, as I wouldn't think they would last 4 days from tea. Maybe though.
I'm not in any way saying that chamomile is safe, but if you randomly have a cup - don't freak.

I pretty much drink the same teas I did before I was pregnant - peppermint, chamomile, and rooibos.

I drink red raspberry leaf tea all the way through, which my midwife recommended. I did it with my last pregnancy as well, and I frequently drink it when I'm on my period anyway, so it's something I'm used to drinking often. There are some people who recommend not drinking it in the early stages, but I go with what my midwife and my own research have told me. You need to follow your own mind on that one, though, just like everything else. :-)

Hey hun, thanks for the update. Here is some positive news, friend of mine started having contractions from 4 months and she was put on bed rest, wasn't given anything. She had contractions every 15-20 minutes, every day and they never went away, she stayed on bed rest till 7th month and went into labor and her baby is 6 months old now and a healthy baby. So sometimes you can make it months with contractions, hers never went away, her doctor said as long as they are always 15-20 minutes apart than she was okay, but they were to start to be every 2-3 minutes than she would be in trouble. But in the end the baby is a healthy little boy now. Try to stay off of your feet and relax as much as possible.Elevate your feet on to pillows. I drank tea a little bit because I was sick, not over doing it, but drank 2 weeks in a week, I guess not bad. Feeling good thank god.
