I know the current advice is 6 months but I can't do that.

Im going back to work at 5 months, and the nursery Seth is going to have said he needs to be weaned by the time he starts.

My question is how long does it take to wean a baby, and when should I start? I did want to leave it til 6 months but obviously I can't do that now.

I advise you find another nursery. Fully weaning him by 5 months is a tad extreme IMO. By all means you could start giving him cereals and stuff if he is ready but i think a baby will only be weaned when it is ready to be weaned. Milk is a big part of a babys life for about 12 months

Good luck hun :hugs:

I would too. I know a lot of people do start earlier, but for a nursery to be encouraging you to go against government guidelines seems totally wrong - would they be saying the same if he was starting nursery at 3 months?

Sounds like they're just trying to make it easier for themselves with fewer milk feeds? Even if he was starting at 6 months he'd still be getting most of his nutrition from milk x

I agree with the others.. I would find another nursery.
I started Colton early BUT thats because I felt he was ready. Not because I was told that he HAD to before starting nursery. Actually if I felt he wasn't ready by the 5 month mark I wouldn't wean him.
I think you should stick to what YOU want for your LO, if you dont want to wean him by then, then tell the nursery that. Tell them about the guidelines and your reasoning for waiting. If they still say he MUST be weaned, then I would DEF find another one!

I agree with all the others hun! I'm sorry but no nursery should be telling you that your child needs to be fully weaned. I understand nurserys that won't take a child if they won't take a bottle, but that sounds ridiculous considering current weaning guidelines.

I would also probably be having serious words with them.

What about a child minder?

I totally agree with everyone, I would find another nursery Dec is nearly 10 months and he is not fully weaned yet, yes he has solids and such but he still gets lots of milk. Hope everything works out for you but I dont think I have ever heard of a baby fully weaned by 5-6 months.
Good luck hun
