When to test?

I'm currently 5dp5dt. It was an FET, and we transferred one blast. I've read things that fet's can be a little slower to implant, and don't want to test and end up with a false negative. We did a fresh transfer in 2013 (also transferred one blast) and I had a positive at 6dp5dt, which was also the first day I tested.

That depends on how bummed you will be if you get a negative. I have seen some gals get BFP at 4dp5dt and others not until almost a week later. If you are stressed not knowing I would say test.

On a fresh cycle I got my BFP 4dp5dt. I don't do my FET until Aug. 10th, but I have no patience so I will be testing early again

I did, and unfortunately it failed. I knew deep down that it didn't work though. It felt totally different from our fresh cycle where we transferred one blast and ended up with our son.
It's okay though. We'll start over in September and transfer two blasts instead of one. Good luck to you!
