My boy is 18 weeks but was 5 weeks 2 days early so was tube fed for 10 days, anyway my friends baby is 9 days older and she seems to want her baby to do everything early, wanted baby to sleep through all night from really young, take him to baby activities where only took babies from older age etc etc.Anyway was only saying last week how doesnt think her baby ready to wean until Xmas then 2 days later she had started to wean him because the pass couple of nights baby was waking up more often in the night, now I thought this could happen if baby has growth spurt and doesn't always mean ready to wean!My baby no where near ready to wean as he's only recently been having a full 5 oz at each feed, just wondering if my one else waiting?

I wait.

I see no need to rush, we BLW which i love doing and isnt really possible before 5 1/2 months anyway.

Im in no rush to make them grow up quicker.

I'll be waiting as long as possible... Weaning is a pain in the arse unless BLW. I can't be doing with all the pureeing crap.

I'm so excited about weaning, to see her reaction, likes/dislikes, but I'm not going to rush it. My brother and sil started at 3 months, and most my friends have started at 3.5/4 months. A few have even said they've been giving rusks since 12 weeks "as they're not really food" and one of them said I was being mean by not letting Jessica try one yet. We haven't set a date when we will start, but not yet. Do they have to be able to sit unaided to wean? Whats blw?x

Personally i would never puree feed so unaided sitting is a must. Though sitting supported in a bumbo like chair is ok.

Baby led weaning, no purees. Just normal family from the get go. I love it, none of m kids have had any puree foods

Flynn is almost 5 months & still ebf, I gave him a little bit of plain yoghurt on the end of my finger the other day as he just kept watching me eat! I plan to wait until 6 months to wean, but might start a little earlier depending on what Flynn wants.

I waited. Weaning is one more thing to worry about and it's messy. Enjoy the milk only time.

I waited, but I'm the only one I know who did. Our pediatrician was very insistant that we wait, but I get the feeling that most people don't listen to him bc when we went in for ds 6 month check up the doctor was shocked (and happy) that we actually did. Personally, I don't think ds was ready for food any earlier. It took several months before he even enjoyed his food, and now at 10 months he's only JUST learned to put his own food in his mouth.

Don't let anyone pressure you to give food earlier if you want to wait. Oh, and I just want to add that my son also went through the growth spurt at 4 months and he started waking more in the night. Eventually around 5 months he started sleeping through the night, and he didn't have any food until 6 months, so it's a myth that babies need food to sttn. Food or not, most babies don't sleep well at 4 months.

I waited with both till six months, we BLW with DS and we loved it he never had purees. Was so disappointed that we couldn't do the same with DD but for medical reasons we just couldn't. I was the only one I know who waited till 6 months and got loads of pressure for it from family and friends but now DS is two and will try any food at least once. I would wait especially with a premie.

oh yeah, no rush.

im not a fan of blw thusfar. she gags on absolutely everything, pukes, yells at the puke/foodbits, then is bored. if i give her something like yogurt/applesauce on a spoon shes happy as a clam to let me feed her. so we'll be going the puree route. at 7.5 months i feed her in the highchair just at dinnertime for now xx

What is BLW? I'm confused I thought you were suppose to introduce solids by 6 months? What is weaning? If you still keep breast milk as the main source of food and just start with one solid food feeding a day is that okay? My pediatrician said from 4-6 months you can start solids but I'm waiting until 6 to get full benefits of EBF. If we start solids then will that lower my supply?

Baby led weaning:) you dont usually do purees you go straight to regular food:)
Ill be waiting until six months, i tried at four months with my daughter and she got so terribly constipated she ended up with five fissures! Ouchie! Ill def be waiting with my son:)

Waiting until I could do BLW was great, and way more easier that puree feeding my preemie who couldn't sit unaided (but I had too nevertheless - she was a 27 weeker though, so a bit of a difference) At 5wks2days early Id say you could wait longer.

Just fab, I'd recommend that ease of BLW to anyone. Yep sometimes I worried if she was eating at all but I always reminded myself of the "food is for fun before one" thing. Shes a fab independant eater now!

BLW is baby led weaning, you give your baby food to pick up and feed themselves and nothing is pureed. Its very messy and not for everyone but my son loves it.

Your baby should have milk whilst your weaning as they dont get any benefit from food really as they dont digest it, its just to get them used to food. Milk is there main 'food' source til they're around 1.

I would do some reasearch on the internet on how you can wean your baby and chose what is comfortable for you and your baby, good luck!

Yes I'll be waiting.

The thought of weaning makes me sad because all Millie has ever needed is Me being exclusively breastfed, I don't want to introduce anything else.

I'll likely be doing a mixture of BLW and traditional. But all homemade, non of that pureed jarred crap in the supermarket that all looks a nasty yellow colour!

Its ok if you have time to make your own baby food, but theres no shame in jarred food:) sounds like blw woyld be easier tho (and cheaper!):)

it takes me less time to put a couple of cubes or sweet potato in a colander on top of a pot of boiling water and then mash it than it takes to warm up a jar? also a sweet potato for instance is 30p and there is enough there for 5 days at least. a jar of food (i had to check) is 60p? that's enough for 1 day i think because you have to bin the rest after use ... i think? this is why i don't understand jars.

OP i waited for 6 months, i started purees because frankly the choking scares me. i have since started slowly trying finger foods. i believe even if your baby is showing signs of being ready (my baby did) ie. sitting up by himself, showing interest in food before 6 months .. you can't see what's going on in the inside. i believe my baby's digestive system was not ready before 6 months.

i wouldn't really care what your friend does if i was you, make your own decision and just go with it.

For me with jars its about 10 secs in a micro and I don't need to watch it while it heats. A pan of boiling water needs watching, mashing needs a pair of hands which could be serving my DS's meal. Plus watching two kids.

Also for medical reasons I spend a lot of time discussing the texture of DDs meals with various health people its easier for all to say stage 1 or 2 or 3 and know exactly what consistency we are all talking about rather than me trying to describe. mushy, or lumpy (size of lumps, firmness of lumps etc) It also allows me to measure her progress well.

And different foods can be kept for varying lengths of time. We tend to take one meal from the jar (and if she doesn't finish it) we freeze the rest in ice cubed trays so it doesn't go to waste. It is more expensive but she needs what she needs.

I would much prefer not to use them but there isn't anything wrong with them either. I was reluctant about them till I actually looked at the ingredients in them and if you choose carefully some brands have no added ingredients or 'crap' in them

I certainly couldn't even use anything but stage one jars with DD1. Again that was medically (literally could not have a lump without throwing full stomach contents up) I certainly had no Shame with jars. Too busy cleaning full milk bottle sick 24/7 to be preparing anything.

DD2 completely refused them with BLW when I tried. An odd Ella's kitchen a few times but generally a no. Even now she won't let me help her with a spoon, I just had to let her learn herself!
