I go away for 1/2 hr and the thread has taken quite a turn! I have been laughing like a loon and have had some difficulty trying to explain it to DH :haha:

Thanks ladies. You've really amused me this evening

wow. this thread is pleasant
i know its a long way back but:

Ive ff all 9 of mine... never even attempted bf as that was my personal choice but i would definately give ebm to my babies if i could afford it!

Hey Sam, just curious as to why you wouldn't give your kids your own breastmilk but would give them another woman's? You dont have to explain yourself, im just being nosey really :flower:
xx

Ha ha its ok, i dont mind replying! I just dont like the thought of anything to do with that side of things, whether its breastfeeding or expressing. Just makes me feel uncomfortable. I know that seems mad as bf is supposed to be natural thing, but not for me! But obviously i know that the milk is better than formula, so if i could for example buy it, i would!xxx

Imagine if you had BF... if you'd done 6 months for each child you'd have spent 4.5 years doing it!
My mum BF my brother until she had me when he was 3, she BF me until she had my younger brother when i was 4, and BF him for 2 years.
9 years solid BFing

Well, I haven't learned much about wet nurses in tis thread but I have discovered that B&B is full of clatty mingers.. Thanks for the giggle ladies.

Hahahaha, what a lovely late-night read. Hopefully i'll be able to get back to sleep and dream of sperm sandwiches and bogey pies.

Oh yeah, kayleigh, i remember that mcd's thing being in the chron. About 10 years ago?

Well I feel like a real party pooper trying to get this back on topic now.... :D

But I was thinking maybe if we didn't refer to them as a 'wet nurse', that more women might feel more comfortable with it.

'Wet nurse' is a bit 'wrinkly old midwife' meets 'wet dream' meets 'hand that rocks the cradle' for me but if I was to give my baby to a lactator (or similar) then maybe the job would sound more like a medical practice / service?

Just a thought ;)

Maybe. It is a bit old fashioned! But ''wet nurse'' fits right in with our 'sperm sandwich' convo lol (pun intended)! But yes, perhaps a change of name would change people's views. I still don't like the idea of my baby feeding from another woman though :nope: As soon as I'd learned what a lactator was I still wouldn't use one, but I wish I'd heard of milk banks xx

My BIL was breastfed by his aunt occasionally because MIL wasn't producing enough. The aunt had just lost her baby so she was full of milk and needed to ease the pressure from being engorged. It's sad to think about, but my aunt said it was almost therapeutic in a way because although her baby had just passed, she could nurture her nephew when he needed it.

I am probably a complete hypocrite for feeling this way but I could never let another woman feed Emma. But I would feed another baby in a heartbeat. It doesn't make sense but that's just how I feel. I'm a nurturer by nature and just standing by while another woman feeds and bonds with my baby would be too much for me to take. :flower:

Maybe in a bygone era where there were real communities and matriarchy, this concept wouldn't be so alien. I spent some time in Fiji a few years ago and not only do women breastfeed each other's babies, they have babies for those who can't! If a woman's baby died, there is no question that her milk would be used somehow in the community - from nursing another baby to a sick adult to feeding a family. In fact, the verb 'to nurse' means 'to nourish' :)

I think it's sad we've lost all that.

However, I also think because we've lost all this, in modern reality it would mean handing your baby over to someone you didn't know for a large majority of the day rather than sitting next to your cousin while she feeds him / her.

Yeah it was aaaaages ago but but suddenly the sperm sandwich brought back the memories :haha:

Hi ladies.. I'm back...What's on the menu for lunch today :)

If for some reason I was ever unable to breastfeed, I would do everything possible to ensure that my babies would only get breastmilk. So yes, I would be absolutely fine with using a wet nurse. For me, the bonding issue would be a small sacrifice to make compared to the nutrition and health issues. I've even told hubby that if I die leaving a small baby behind that he has to lactate! :haha: I would also love to be a wet nurse for someone else, it's such an amazingly important thing to do.
