5 minute birth -TMI

ok, ive watched it all the way thru now and it wasnt actually so bad! the voiceover reminds me of Saw though!

AMAZING.
Loved it, and can't wait to do it all again, not scary to me, not unnatural, not something to be feared. Its perfect and wonderful and that feeling when the baby pops out, wow its like nothing else in this world. Instant euphoria. Bear in mind I had a 3rd degree tear, but felt nothing but elation xxxx

In my opinion, being strapped down, having an episiotomy (why the hell did they do that anyways??? She was stretching and progressing so nicely and would have likely delivered intact) and being objectified as just a vagina rather than a woman is certainly not my idea of a nice and beautiful birth video......

I see what you mean but I don't think this video objectives anyone. I felt this was brilliant to see a close up of what happens as most birth videos are further away. This allowed you to see the contractions and pushing the baby down and out of the mother, in much more detail than you would get from a video showing the mothers face, midwives, birth partner etc in the shot. I felt it was educational to anyone who doesn't know how for example a baby comes out, or is frightened about the possible eventuality of an episitomy. Although I do agree in this instance it seemed unneccessary. x

i think maybe it was necassary, i wish they had done this in my case, i had a 4th degree tear which would have been prevented if she had cut me. this time i have to have a csec i feel a bit pissed off really.

thought it was really interesting, but really hoping that if they have to put stitches in they give a local first as that looked really painful!

Yeah I mean obviously we weren't there with her, but she was progressing really well and had great movement down there. I didn't, and had to have a cut, but this lady in the video seemed to be coping perfectly fine and her body was working with her rather than against her. The babies head isn't too large for her, if you look at the babies head once born. Then again as I said, I wasn't there and obviously appearances can be decieving the babies head could have been larger than it seems!

They give you a local, little pin prick and you go numb :hugs:

I believe however you can still have a film which shows a close up vaginal birth while still still incorporating the woman into it. Birth is so much more then just a medical event and she is and should be an integral part of it all..... But to me this video emphasized how the medical model has devalued the woman's role to being merely the carrier of the baby and that the primary figures during the birth are the care providers who's job is to get the baby out and that mindset continues to strongly strive throughout the system. I also felt that this video strongly supported the medical model and interventions without justifying the rationale at all which to me demonstrates a very poor teaching video.

As for the episiotomy.... It's likely that she wouldn't have teared and it's even likelier that had she did tear the degree to which it would have occured would have been less then what was caused from the episiotomy. As I said before the woman was stretching beautifully and there was very minimal skin blanching. Despite her being in a very poor position for tearing during delivery, there was definitly potential for her to stretch much more without causing any perineal trauma so from a tearing perspective there was absolutely no rationale there.... Perhaps the baby was demonstrating signs of hypoxia which would have made the episiotomy justifiable but the video did not go into the details of the situation and when taking the speed at which the 2nd stage progression was occuring a need for an episiotomy is even lessened....

Then in terms of reducing the incidence of 3rd and 4th degree tears.... well the incidence of them are quite low. I have attended over a hundred deliveries and just once had I had a woman experience a third degree tear. Perhaps, an episiotomy would have saved her from that but I'll never know  But of those over 100 deliveries approximately 1/3 of them experienced no tearing at all! Another third experienced only a first degree tear which is only a mild laceration into the skin which does not extend into the muscle and the rest received only 2nd degree tearing which extends into the perineal muscle. Episiotomies always extend into the muscles so they will always be classified as atleast a 2nd degree perineal laceration. By not doing routine episiotomies, two thirds of those woman experienced less perineal damage if any at all. So in order to save one vagina from a third or fourth degree tear you would have to inflict unnecessary damage on nearly 70 vaginas......

Then when you factor in the research which compares women who experience natural second degree tears compared to women who receive episiotomies the evidence is even more compelling to abandon the routine practice which is why so many care providers have. Women who tear naturally are less likely to experience excessive blood loss from the wound, they report less discomfort and are more likely to heal faster then the woman who received episiotomies and they are less likely to experience discomfort during sex in the future. On the flip side, tearing often will not produce a straight line which can make suturing take longer. As a result, there are still OB's who perform routine episiotomies primarily because it takes them less time to get in and out of there. I had a placement with one of them.... Mutilated 5 perineums unnecessarily for the sake of getting a good review at the end of the week. Not something I am proud of :nope: and I'm still haunted by the fact that I did it.

The most frightening bit for me was the afterbirth, it looked like a weird fish thing haha. Oh god maybe he can stay in there :) xxx

Wow! Very interesting. My first birthing video. Loved how the mother had perfectly manicured nails!

I had and epidural that failed, only half of me was numb but the other side I could feel, they were a bit shocked when I yelled at them while stitching me back up, they did ask if I wanted a local to numb while they finished...I asked how many stitches left and she said about 4-5 on the un-numb side so I said just finish it up without the local. its not horrible even if your not numb just little pokes then you get use to it.

I agree with KandyKinz on this one i think. It was interesting to watch but certainly not a beautiful birth video, I love watching births so i enjoyed it anyway!

Also, i had an episiotomy but also ended up with a 3rd degree tear (verging on 4th) and i have to have a section this time too - i feel your pain Donna :hugs:. I always think that with KandyKinz being a trained midwife (correct me if i'm wrong) i'm guessing she's got more of an idea about this stuff than me so i'll believe her if she says the woman was stretching well! :winkwink: x

Not quite a fully trained midwife yet.... a four month placement away from it though.

Congrats! To be a midwife???? I may or maynot go back to my training next september... it depends on what life with baby is like and where I can get my final placement.

Yep to be a midwife! I was going to start this september but fell pregnant in july :dohh:. I'm so excited, it really is my ideal job. For years i've been researching and almost going for it but then changing my mind, it's only since having Poppy that i have known its something i HAVE to do!

I hope you manage to go back to your training, sounds like you'd make a fabulous midwife xx

Great video.. although I have done it, not with episiotomy, and just gas and air - that looks ouchies!

Good video, although very scary and not sure I want to go through all that....:+(

Just watched this. I've seen a few birth vids but they've all stopped before the placenta came out. I'm shocked by how big the afterbirth is!!! May just be being thick (this is my 1st) but never thought it would be huge! x
