Dragonfly, where are you from in the Midwest? I am, too. I don't think I've seen any name calling to the opposing people only about the candidates. I think it's remained pretty civil.

I'm in Wisconsin :)

I agree that most people have remained quite civil, which is great, but I did see a few that crossed the line. For example, I don't remember who, but someone was accused of being "full of shit" and a misogynist. I don't mind disagreements, even when they get heated, but personal attacks make me very uncomfortable.

Anyway, I honestly can't wait until the election is over.

I definitely agree. I may not understand why on earth you'd pick Romney but I won't name call for it. I don't care who you vote for, I'm just scared of what he'll try to do once he's in office. He's so shady. At least Obama may not do much, but it isn't scary. You won't see him pushing his religious beliefs on the country. I just think if you're going to vote him out of office, maybe wait until his competition doesn't come off as a lunatic.Romney may have some very good traits, but his bad ones scare me. I don't know what he'll do to my country. How it would affect us and Obama is very clear with his intentions and a very likeable person. Every interview I've seen of him he has been spot on with my beliefs.

Im just curious as to what you think that Obama has done that is so great?

Im scared to death of what the next 4 years will hold if he does get re-elected. I think Healthcare will be worse than it is now. I think people won't want to join the military cause he keeps taking their benefits. I don't think the economy will get any better. All that will happen is more and more debt for our kids :( Sad to say.

Ugh! People moan about paying for insurance. They moan about not paying for insurance and having the government provide it. Make up your damn minds!

i only read the first few pages but i just wanted to say i can't believe how much knowledge some of you UK and Canadian girls have about American politics!! probably more than some Americans!

I didn't say he was great, I said he doesn't do much actually. And tbh I was under the impression Obama got you out of the recession. Is that not true?

I think Romney will win. Can't believe the debt we are in. Sick of socialist agenda and healthcare talk.
And I tired of this silly business about Romney attacking women and their "choice." :p urgh
I don't want our healthcare to be run by the government. I have seen WAY to many birth stories from the UK where the nurses or doctors said it was too late for an epidural and other such horror stories. My mom was giving birth to my brother and he she was 9 to 10 cm but she told them to give her the epidural and they gave it to her. Im appalled at so many stories and the treatment that is given to women there. The way the nurses and doctors treat the women. Its horrifying. It wouldnt be tolerated here. You dont even get your own room :(
And of course I know there are always bad birth stories everywhere, but Ive never seen so many bad ones as ones in the UK as far as treatment.

That's cause women get pushed to have csections. Birth stories from the USA are just as bad.

By the way, we have been in debt since bush.

That may be true, but the debt has never been worse and has increased at a ridiculous rate.

Out of the recession? What? That's still going on full force. He tried with the stimulous package but to be honest it didn't do anything but put Americans further into debt. Umemployment is actually higher now than when he took office

Obama is still ahead in electoral votes.

If Romney gets elected, mind if I join you UKers? :winkwink:

Where is this 'you don't get your own room' stuff coming from? I have NEVER heard of a UK girl having their baby in a shared room/ward (other than if it all happened as they arrived at the hospital). Yes, it is usually a ward after birth but most hospitals have private rooms avaliable for between thirty and one hundred pound a night. Many women chose not to though.

If you suddenly start asking for an epi at 9cm your probably in the transinational period, the I don't wanna do this I want an epi doesn't actually always mean that and considering it lasts on average thirty minutes then I think mw's are right to guide women down the non-epi path (especially as by the time they got the specialist, he explained all the risks, you signed the consent form, get in a good position and try and remain still, your back gets numb and then epi is sited, you could of pushed that baby out). You have to understand that labour and birth is seen different here and they do try to keep a natural approach, whereas it seems more medical in the US, neither approach is right or wrong just different. But that difference means that they can't really be compared in a what would happen here way. Remember that obamacare wouldn't suddenly change your system into one that unmedicated births are the norm or gas and air in every hospital is the norm. The fundamental beliefs of the system, the things women want won't suddenly change because healthcare is coming from taxes instead of from paying an insurance company.

The NHS does have its flaws (although the example of not having an epi at 9cm to me is about how you feel, with my second I was adamant no epi as I hate feeling out of control 9.5cm comes and I shout for an epi because I am in transition, but mw says its too late and less than ten minutes later I am pushing my baby into the world, one push and I am holding my baby. Not receiving the epi might be a horror story to others but for me it was a success story) but obamacare wouldn't be an identical model, you learn from our mistakes, you pick the best of the UK, Australian and Canadian healthcare, you change the bits that don't work.

Sorry for typos on my phone and also tired!

I think what American ladies are talking about with not having their own room is afterward and your partner/husband not being able to stay the night. Here they let your partner stay your whole visit. For me that's the only way I could've handled it after my c-sections.

I said you can pay for a private room after but women tend not to. Besides the hospitals will still be the same hospitals you have now, so I doubt they are going to start knocking down walls just to make seperate rooms into wards. The new maternity units/labour are being built with all seperate rooms and space from Dad to stay.

As I said the NHS has it flaws, taking this long to realise how important it is for Dad to stay, for you to bond as a little family is one of them but we are learning and as HCP already know it is important and women already want it, it is not likely that it will go baclwards to not allowing it. Just because it would be two healthcare systems paid for by tax does not mean you guys get an identical model.

Very well put. I was allowed one person who never had to leave in my room. No ward for after birth. That's their system, not mine.

Also you don't have to pay extra for it here.
