Any truth to this?

I just read somewhere that underwired bras can cause inflammation and mastitis. Is this true? Do any of you have experience of this?

Also, maternity bras! I'm finding it really hard to find a pretty one anywhere. Does anyone have any reccommendations? I'm only just coming up to 6 weeks but my boobs have already expanded and my right one has some stretchmarks already! :(

Thanks girls x

ETA: sorry if this is in the wrong place, I figured breastfeeding is the best place to ask! x

It can do, especially if ill fitting, because it can restrict the flow of milk. In the first few weeks, it's particularly important to make sure there's no pressure on them. I'd really recommend Bravissimo, and I've heard that Hot Milk are good too. They have lots of gorgeous ones!

I've not worn an underwired bra since the day LO was born as my midwife advised against them. To be honest I've not worn a normal bra either :haha: I live in my nursing bras!

I never got maternity bra's either to be honest. I just bought cheap primark bras as I figured I wouldn't be in them long and so didn't want to spend alot of money.

I was going to do that but I don't fiot in them! I'm needing to go up to a 34G  it's awful, this pregnancy will cost me a fortune :haha:

I got fitted in bravissimo whist pregnant and they said that underwired is fine as long as you are properly measured regularly and check that your bra fits properly.
I then bought my other bras from Marks and spencer as they were the cheapest large cup size bras I could find (same as you, 34G). Always underwired.
It's worth noting that Marks do 2 for £20 nursing bras too if you're planning on breast feeding that go up to an H cup.

That's great, thankyou! I always make sure the underwire is flat against my breastbone so it should be okay. I'm definitely planning on breastfeeding so I'll keep all those suggestions bookmarked for then! Thankyou very much girls, super helpful!

I wore underwired throughout my whole pregnancy and one of my nursing bras has wires as well, though I don't wear it often. I've never had mastitis or even a blocked duct that I'm aware of.

My nursing bra is an underwire nursing bra and I haven't had any issues..... thank goodness!

I wore underwire bras for my whole pregnancy and have been for about 3 months now (got fed up with nursing bras). Luckily I haven't had any problems.

I wore an underwired bra last week. I was measured at the shop and bought it as my dress really needed them to be facing more north lol. Tbh at the end of the day it hurt like hell, I'm a g cup btw don't know if this makes a difference x

I wore underwired during pregnancy but my breasts didn't grow that much tbh. Now I'm breastfeeding I wear a couple of Royce "Lauren" bras as they are dead comfy, very supportive and the prettiest (some other Royce bras are a bit ugly). I have a very pretty Hot Milk bra I bought for a wedding and it is good but it isn't as supportive as the Royce ones - I can wear it for a good 8hrs but not 24hrs, the elastic and side seams just aren't as firm.

Now that I'm four months in to feeding I can wear some softer bras to sleep in (like M&S) but I wouldn't recommend softies in the first few weeks after the birth as although they sound like they'd be more comfy they aren't because they allow the breast too much movement which leads to achey boobs and chaffed nipples.
