Hello! I have PCOS and doc prescribed me with Metformin. Am currently on 500mg x 2 daily and trying to go up to 1000mg x2 daily..... not sure when maybe sometime next week.

However, its driving me C.R.A.Z.Y! My side effects are H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E!

First, I had diarrhoea. That eased off for a while and now its bad with a vengeance.

Then it was the nausea. I´ve been having such bad nausea that I can barely work! Yesterday evening and this morning was SO bad, I really thought I could puke in front of my class!

And now the gynae is already closed, so I can´t simply pop by to see if she can give me any anti-nausea medicine.

PLUS, I´m not even on my full dosage yet! I´m only on 50% the dosage that the doctor wants me to take..... oh geez!

Going to pop by my GP later and see if she can give me some sick leave.

Am still waiting for my AF to come.... hate it whenever my AF does a disappearing act.

Is there anybody who just started Metformin??? Would like to share experience and find a Metformin TTC Buddy?

hi i am on day 3 and only taking 750g befor bed for a week then i will up it 2 2x750g one in the morning and one at night, maybe you took to much all at once try one tablet a day for a week then up it. luckly i have not had any side affect yet
hope doctor had some advice :)

Hi girls! I am on day 3, too! I need to eventually take 3 pills a day and right now i'm only taking one after dinner. My worst side-effect is this damn headache... i have had it since starting the pills. I also have had diarrhea, an upset stomach, & my face is breaking out!

The doc prescribed it bc my blood test showed that i am insulin resistant, which is a precurser for diabetes. She wants me to lower my insulin level by taking the metformin & by losing weight. She pushed my IUI back until June!

Would love to go thru this journey with you girls! I'm sure my OH just thinks i'm a chronic complainer! Cheerios... hope you start to feel a bit better as your body adjusts!

My name is Tammy, by the way! :flower:

im on my third week of metformin.... idk what its really doing for me yet i take 850 mgs 2x a day. side effects are finally starting to ease off.

Hi girls, i have been taking metformin for a few years now and when i initially tried the i was on 1000mg twice a day however this is a massive dose to take straight away so i stopped and began taking it again but for the first week i just took 500mg once a day, the following week i took it twice a day the the third week i took it 3 times a day, i had no side effects doing it this way and have now been taking metformin for 2 years at this dose, my endocrinologist has since informed me that there is no reason why i should not concieve according to my bloods, i also now have regular periods and prior to taking metformin i didn't ovulate for 7 years, hope this is helpful

Sorry to but in but heard about slow releasing met on another thread - am on met ( have pcos and so insulin resistance ) but don't get the effects as bad as you cheerios - I did quiz my dr about it - he said it would be considered if you get bad symptoms - might be worth asking your dr if your symtons are persistantly this bad.

Well i haven't felt sleepier from the metformin -- but i was extremely tired all the time during my first trimester! Any possibility of that??? :hugs:

BTW -- does anyone know if metformin is safe to take during pregnancy? Will we stay on it when we get pregnant? Just curious...

Hi mommytommypa i have read a few studies that suggest taking metformin until the end of the first trimester however when i ask my re she said i won't need it once i've conceived so just stop taking it, she did also sat that it wouldn't do any harm, hope this is helpful

i think if u google it it says diferent things i think in america u keep taking but here u stop not sure which is best but there is a lot on diferent sites.

cant be pregnant but just cried all day not sure whats up with me :)

Hi Ladies,
I just found out I have PCOS, and now I'm on day 6 of my first cycle with Metformin. I'm on the gradual release stuff so my symptoms aren't killing me. I take 1000mg every evening with dinner and tonight I'm moving to 1500mg. I'm a little nervous, but hopefully I don't get hit hard with side affects. The worst I'v had is just nausea and light-headedness/dizziness. Oh and I do feel a little extra tired these days. I'm also taking Provera to bring on AF and will be taking 100mg of Clomid once AF comes. My doc is fairly certain that this cycle I will get pregnant. I'm super excited, but trying not to get my hopes too high. My doc mentioned that once I do get pregnant I won't have to take the Metformin anymore. YAY!

Hi Girls!
Apologize for late reply! I didn´t realize that I had replies, because I checked the thread 1 day later and didn´t see any replies, so I didn´t check it subsequently. YAY! There are some Metformin newbies too!

My side effects have gone down a lot! Yesterday was the first day I had a "normal" toilet session - sorry for TMI. But oh boy, its such a blessing cos it was loose stools for 1whole week. I´m feeling better much too, actually the side effects are almost zero. The only thing is that I still get headaches more easily (compared to without the Met.). Like when I don´t sleep enough or something. And I feel that I need drink much more water these days.

Yup, so today I´m going to up my dosage to 1,500mg. Normally take 500mg once in the morning and once at night. And today, I´m going to try taking 2 pills at night. I only have to work from 2 to 5pm tomorrow, so I really hope that the dosage isn´t going to get worse.

Tammy! Hi! Nice to meet you! You sent me a friend request right? I see you have a son. Did you manage to conceive him naturally? Does that mean you didn´t have PCOS before that? Oh, regarding MEt. during pregn. I heard 2 sides of the coin. One side says to stop once you´re pg, one says during the 1st trimester you´re still advised to take it to decrease the chance of miscarriage..... I´m not PG yet and no AF since Jan, so I ain´t thinking so far.....

shilindz - Wow! Your doctor is cool! I would like to start on Clomid, but my Endo. only wants to see me in 4-6 mths time. I think if I get impatient, I might make an appointment with my gynae before that. We´re both moving from 1000mg to 1500mg today! Let me know how your side effects go.

Hey hb! I tried asking my doc for extended release but she had never heard of it before. I´m quite good after more than 1 week on 1000mg, but still have to up it to 2000mg. So I´m still waiting for the right time. Will up it to 1500mg today and when things are "ok", I´ll up it to 2000mg over the weekend. Dunno if that´s over-ambitious but I really want to be over and done with the side effects. I have both PCOS and insulin resistance too..... What´s your dosage?

Hey nice, thanks for your encouragement on Met. May I ask if you increased from 1000mg to 2000mg at one go? Or did you first increase it to 1500mg and then to 2000mg? And how did you know that you ovulate? My doc hasn´t told me whether I ovulate or not....and I´m currently not taking my temps. Wanted to start taking my temps when my AF decides to show its face...but so far no AF, so no tmeps....

It could be Metformin you know. I´m not 100% sure either, but I was EXTREMELY moody during my first week of taking Met. Couldn´t take myself either. The smallest thing made me pissed off, whereas I usually can pull myself together, with the Met. I was soooo volatile! It has gotten better though.

Hi cheerio i have always gradually increased my met but the dosage that i'm currently on which is 500mg 3 times a day seems to suit me a bit better that taking 2 larger doses! I have been to see my RE today and she said she is considering increasing the dose as she feels this will reduce the length of my cycles, they are currently 40 days+ ! As for knowing if you ovulate, there is a blood test you can have done to show whether your ovulating or not,

Hey Cheerio,
So far so good on the symptom front. Today is day 2 with the 1500mg dose. I take all 3 pills at one time. I'm not if that helps or makes it worse. While I was taking the 1000mg dose I only had one bout of diahrea in the middle of the night (tmi I know). I woke up and just had to run to the toilet. Otherwise my bowels have been fine. Today didn't feel all that different. I had a little nausea spell in the morning where I thought I might puke, but it didn't last long and I didn't puke. I was trying to think of why I might be having such an easy time with symptoms and the only thing I can think of is diet. I think there's a link between caffeine and metformin symptoms. I do not drink caffeine on a regular basis. In fact I practically live off apple juice. lol I just love the stuff. I also eat frequent small meals instead of 3 large meals. I'm going to look into this and see if there's any research to back it. I'll let ya know :)
How's 1500mg doin for you?
