Anybody just started Metformin? - Need Buddy

I've been taking 1500mg of metformin for 3 weeks now, I get ovarian cyst and get bad ovulation pain, dr suggested I take it, and it actually cut down AF from 6 days to 3 days so can't complain about that. But my side affects are horrible, diarrhea everyday, headaches, nausea, funky taste in my mouth too. Lol. Dr said I will not be taking clomid so now I gotta check my tubes to make sure they're not blocked.

good luck to everyone, the dr did say the side affects will subside with time.

Just wanted to pop on and wish you guys luck. I started Metformin in September 2009. Dr thought I was a bit insulin resistant. I did ovulate on my own, with regular cycles, but not EVERY month. I started with 500mg 1x/day. I have severe IBS with diarhea, so my OB didn't want me to start on a high dose. I moved up to 500mg 2x/day, 3 days later as I wasn't having any bad side effects.

I did initially suffer some mild diarhea and stomach upset. I was nauseous whenever I ate. After about 3 weeks though all of my side effects disappeared. I am fine now. Every now and then, I have a break through with nausea or diarhea, but its manageable.

I never went past 1000mg a day. There was no need for it. I started ovulating every month, and with the help of Clomid in March, I got a BFP, right at the end of March. I am currently 6 weeks pregnant and awaiting an early scan on Thursday. Still taking Metformin, still feeling fine.

One major plus too is that even though I'm not obese, I had some weight to lose, and no matter what, I couldn't lose it. In my first 6 weeks of taking Met, I lost 15 pounds, which was nice.

Wow! Great to hear such great news! I'm currently on 1000mg a day too..... though my doc wanted me to take 2000mg daily. I went up to 1,500mg once for a week but I couldn't take it cos I had constant migraines..... Now at 1000mg I have minimal side effects.

My AF just arrived after 1 month of taking Metformin. I really hope it'd regulate my cycles and my next cycle won't take 3 months but 1 month to come!

May I ask if you had regular AFs before taking the Met.? Also, I haven't lost a single KG since I started the Met. Do you think its still effective on me??? I'm wondering really, because I heard that so many people have lost wt. on it. So I'm thinking if I haven't, does that mean that is not effective on me???

I did have cycles that were usually quite regular. Usually between 27-30 days. The reason they put me on it was because even though I had the regular cycles, day 21 progesterone testing showed that I wasn't ovulating every single cycle. So they decided to try me on the Met and it has made me ovulate every cycle on my own. I'm not sure that everyone will lose weight onb it. I was working out very hard and watching my diet and not losing a single pound. I found that by introducing Met into my life has made me lose weight even when I wasn't watching my diet.

Hey Sherri

I was reading through your previous posts and realized you've suffered a series of M/C. I'm sooo so sorry! I really hope that this pregnancy would be a smooth and easy one for you! Perhaps the Metformin would help with the pregnancy.

Can't really comment much on this issue....as I still have to get pregnant. Great that you managed to get PG on 1,000mg but you managed to get PG even without Metformin right? Now, I'm considering increasing my dosage but still am a bit timid about it. :(

What dosage did you doctor want you to take?

Hey cheerios, no I'v never EVER had regular cycles. I'm hoping the met will help with that, but I'm not so sure. Still no O this cycle and my chart is all wonky. I'v been on the 1500mg dose for a while too. Not sure about weight loss. I didn't have much to lose, but I exercise a lot as part of my job (military) so my weight is always pretty stable. DH and some family members think I should try and bring my BMI up a little, because it's on the low end of the normal range. But it's really hard for me. I'm going to start trying protein shakes. They should help a little and I'v heard the met really likes the extra protein to do it's job.

Good luck increasing your dosage FX for you :)

Congratulations Sherri

My side affects almost completely disappeared after a few weeks. Hope yours do too Chris'girl.

Hi All

Just thought I'd share my experience with Metformin. I started 7 weeks ago. I suffer from PCOS have regular periods but don't ovulate. My DH has borderline slow motility. Well first cycle as usual no ovulation but this cycle I ovulated!!!! I have had an upset stomach about 3 times in all with terrible cramps but other than that I have been fine.

I started on 500mg twice daily and my doc didn't want to increase and in the end there was no need to.

I have been ttc for about 7 years on and off. Had 2 cycles of IVF/ICSI & 3 transfers. Developed OHSS and really had a tough time with the IVF. In between going for our 3rd cycle was diagnosed with MS so decided against it. Its hard enough when you are healty!

My IVF specialist said there is no reason why I couldn't still get pregnant naturally. So a few years later we have decided to gave it a try.

Here I am on 8dpo on cycle 2 and going to give it my best shot.

I have never has a BFP.

I'm sure what will be will be but I'm just happy that Metformin has given me a chance.

Good luck to you all.

Hi Mish, thanks for sharing :)

Well I think the Met is starting to do it's thing. Af showed yesterday all on her own. No need for Provera this cycle. FX crossed for this cycle. Maybe I'll O for the first time!!!

Best of luck ladies :happydance:

Hey Shlindz! COol beans! So your AF arrived too? Cool! That means both of us are on early days of our cycle. Have you been taking Provera then? I have never tried Provera cos my doc refuses to give that to me. I see, you're in the military! That's why you want a "future soldier" ! That's the sweetest thing ever! :) Wow. Yah I'm a size 8 but could definitely lose some weight since my jeans have been tighter since winter!!! Yah, I think protein shakes might do the trick!!! Though I have never heard that "slimmer" girls have a tougher time getting pregnant. ON the contrary, I always thought the slimmer the better! Better for PCOS at least.

Hi Girls,

Just started on Met a few days ago. Just going for 500mg a day right now as I too have IBS and am sensitive to drugs. I've had PCOS for many years but regular cycles, so LUFS is apparently what I've got.

Ugh, side effects are hitting me, but I'm more worried about losing weight.

I need to GAIN weight and I don't like this idea of having diarrhea and the Met helping to lose weight. I guess I need to eat more to compensate but that just means more side effects! Oh well, all's fair in love and conception!

Also, have any of you had a very slight ache around the ovaries when first taking or while taking Met? I've had a constant slight ache for a while, but its not painful. Could it be that things are moving along? I'm only CD 7 and usually don't ovulate until CD 17-19.

Hey! I had that too! I had that and sore nipples about 1 week before my AF came. And after it came, I had the same dull pain occasionally again. I'm pretty sure its Metformin because I never had those issues before I took Metformin.

I remember that ache too. I couldn't tell if it was bowels or ovaries. But I could feel something going on.

So I didn't get the Clomid this cycle. Couldn't make to the doc's in time. We'll see how things work on their own. I didn't need to take the provera for af this cycle so maybe I won't need the clomid for O. Is anybody else taking anything besides the Met?

Hey everyone!

Just thought I would share my story...

After a year of seeing the Infertility specialists they have confirmed I do have PCOS, however they said that it is mild and my hormones are pretty much "normal". They did say however that my insulin resistance is very bad :(

After researching PCOS and treatment on the internet for over a year I was finally prescribed Metformin just over 2 weeks ago. (1x 500mg for 2 weeks then 2x 500mg for 2 weeks then onto my final dose 3x 500mg).

My cycles have been all over the place for the last 5 years, sometimes the :witch: will be with my for 12-13 weeks!!

I just started to take 1000mg yesterday and today is day one of my cycle! Its around 7 weeks since the start of my last cycle, so hopefully it is a sign that the Metformin is starting to help already :)

I am also seeing a dietician to try and help me lose around 5 stone :( I know it is going to be hard but I'm so determined and me and the hubby joined the gym about 5 weeks ago now and we are both noticing a difference already!

Hey Louise!
Nice to see you here! :) I'm currently taking 1,500mg Metformin as well. Have been on Metformin for more than a month! So far, the side effects are almost gone...I do get the occasional heartburn (I think, feels like heartburn) but its usually at night and pretty manageable. :)

I have IR too.... Great to meet another partner! Here's to regulated AFs and a BFP soon!

Hey Cheerios!

I only really had a few side effects for the first couple of days of taking Metformin but they seem to have calmed alot now.

Hope we get our BFP's very very soon!!

Hey Ladies! I have PCOS too and was just put on Actoplusmet 15/500mg, which is a combination of Actos and Metformin. I'm yet to see anyone else here on this combo drug.
My RE said he prefers this drug over metformin especially for those who are not overweight. And it is supposed to be better tolerated than plain metformin.

I started taking one tablet daily in the beginning of April and was supposed to go up to 2 tablets daily after one week, then I came down with a stomach virus and had to stop taking it for a week and half. I started taking it again last friday, so I will increase to 2 tabs a day tomorrow. Side effect has been pretty mild. I only have mild nausea every once in a while, never had diarrhea.

Last Af was February 23rd, I hope this med helps bring one soon.

Hi all,
I just started taking met yesterday. My dr gave me 1000 mg 2x a day. I feel horrible, when will the side effects start to go away? Is there a remedy for the nausea and diarhea that won't effect ttc? The fatigue is also driving me crazy!!!

Hi Hopeful!
I think there are lot of different forms of Metformin. Yours is probably just one of them. Your side effects however DO sound very mild! No diarrhea is amazing! I had bad diarrhoea for the first week and whenever I increased my dosage....but no more diarrhoea now. :)

Do you usually have regular AFs? Metformin is supposed to regulate your AFs....What's the dosage that your doc wants you to be on?

Hey! I think 2000mg to start is REALLY high! Didn't your doc advise you to take it incrementally??!?? I'm supposed to go up to 2,000mg too, but I started at 500mg first..... Most women would advise you to start at a lower dosage....But then again, if your side effects go away after 1 week, you would have the entire side effects all at one go and no more incremental side effects...... Still, if your side effects are too bad, I'd suggest calling your doc to ask if you can reduce your dosage to start....

I did 500mg for 1 week, followed by 500mg x 2 for another 5 days and tried to increase to 500mg x 3 for 5 days - but it didn't work, cos I developed migraines. So I decreased it to 500mg x 2 for 3 weeks again before increasing to 500mg x 3 again over the past week and I've had no additional side effects. Praise God!!!!

I think you'd need to listen to your body and see how well it takes Metformin.
