Just wondering if any of you ladies have heard of this or know anything about it? We noticed a lump in Max's groin area yesterday so we have had a look online (NHS website not google lol) and it looks exactly like an inguinal hernia. The pictures they have look identical to Max's groin

Apparantly it can affect 1-3% of male babies and is something that develops during pregnancy but may not be visible for several weeks after birth. The advice is to see my GP (already got an appointment for Tues) and they usually refer you to hospital as it requires surgery. According to the NHS website its a straight forward procedure with very little risk of complication but that doesnt stop me worrying. I have just read that he may have to go under general anaesthetic and I am crying my eyes out. My poor little boy, he is only 6 weeks old, its not fair!!

Anyone have any experience with this?

Only in my husband.

His hernia pushed through to his testicle and he didn't seek treatment for months. The surgery said he was about a week away from it bursting and killing him. He didn't get help and subsequently was in a terrible mess.

All they did was a small operation to repair the internal wall. They put a small piece of mesh in to prevent the hernia from pushing back through again.

I would say definitely get it checked out and sooner rather than later. Hernias are absolutely no drama if treated promptly and correctly.

Not sure it my daughters hernia is the same, but I spotted a pea lump above her belly button when she stretched out at 12 months. But was tokd she would it at birth. Most hernias in babies will resolve themselves by age of 2 but dd's will not. Hers is a type caused by sone tissue caught when her tummy muscles were knitting together.

We went to Nhs consultant appointment, who said it needed an op!!! I was in floods of tears. Wasn't happy with the Nhs approach or my treatment when I was there so paid 120 squid for a private consultation. Best thing we did only because he said yes it will not go on it's own, reassured me dd was in no pain and that it didn't require an urgent op. So for us I'm waiting until she's a little older.

A little boy has a huge hernia who goes swimming with us, but the docs aren't in a rush to do anything with it, but I know there are different types I guess.

All you can do is see the specialist and go armed with questions like can you avoid an op this early.

It's horrible feeling helpless when our kids have a problem!!! Really hope you get some good answers soon! Xxx

no all hernias need repairing, some heal up by themself. one of my boys had an umbiliacal hernia which has sorted its self out. best to get it checked though. it is quite a quick op to repair and if it isnt causing any problems they oftern leave it untill they are older.

My daughter had a hernia repair two weeks ago I noticed a lump and took her to the doc and as she is female they thought it was a gland as the lump was mobile ....... I was worried sick and persisted kept taking her to a and e they did a scan on the 3rd day and little miss had her ovary and Fallopian tube sticking out of this hernia :( thankfully they operated that day I was more upset than her we stayed in overnight as she is so young but she never seemed bothered your bubs will be in good hands and as soon as it's repaired it is like a 0.1% chance of it re-occurring

Try not to worry it will defo affect you more than him but it is literally a case of a small op and an overnight stay just because he is young

Hope this helps :)

hiya our son aaron had an undsecended testicle and inguinal hernia that he has had since birth he is now 2 and a half and they finally did the operation to fix it in october 2010. his surgeon told us they wont usually do the operation until the child is 2-3 years old due to the anaesthetic, and the fact it may heal, they tend to monitor it andwould do an emergency operation if it became twisted.

it was horrible knowing he was having an operation and we couldnt help him but before surgery he was restricted to his pushchair even though he wanted to walk as it swelled up causing him pain. now his life had changed immensely we threw his pushchair in the bin in november and he walks everywhere now and loves chasing his little brother around.

try not to worry and see what your doctor says and if you want any more advice then private message me

Thanks ladies.

I am seeing my GP tomorrow morning so hopefully he will be able to tell me more. If we can avoid little man having any operation then we will but if its a risk his health then I suppose there is nothing we can do :growlmad:

I just feel so sorry for him, even though I know he isnt in any pain from it. Poor little man is just sitting here smiling away!
