Has anybody used the lanishoh latch assist? I failed trying to feed my last 2 babies as pain got so bad, i was cracked, bleeded, skin chunks taken off my nipples i had no choice but to stop. Stopped 2 weeks aftwr my first breastfed baby and 2 days after my second as i remembered the pain That was even with a latch person visiting my home daily to help correct latch, and i still couldnt manage it, pain so bad felt like a knife cutting in me. Im so gutted and so jealous about people happily breastfeeding as it something i thought would just happen and it never did, what more could i do?

That sounds very painful, I'm so sorry you didn't get the help you needed. Nipple damage on that scale is not normal and no-one can blame you for stopping feeding.

As far as I know the latch assist is really just a device for elongating the nipple if it is flat/inverted. This can help some babies to feed because the nipple at the back of their mouth stimulates a sucking reflex and more obvious nipples can help a baby latch who was refusing to. However it doesn't help with getting the baby, who is happy to latch and suck, latched on any more pain free as it doesn't make it any easier for the baby to get a big mouthful of breast tissue and it won't help if there are problems in the baby's mouth like tongue tie.

If you are planning to be another baby I'd advice seeing a board certified lactation consultant while pregnant and talk about what happened, your fears, possible causes etc. If they suspect Tongue Tie they can arrange for your baby to be assessed within a few days of being born.

I haven't tried the latch assist but I do use a nipple shield to feed DD. Have you tried one of those? I was having the same issues with sore nipples (although not as severe as yours sounds) and it's been a life saver. My MW said that I can use the shield as long as needed and that some people use it the whole time they are breastfeeding. It's definitely worth a try!! Xx
