We've been through a few sippy-cups to get LO drinking water and now at the 9 month check-up I was told that I should start encouraging LO to drink milk (EBM / formula) from a sippy-cup instead of bottle now.

Can you recommend a really good sippy cup?

At what age did your LO start using a sippy cup for milk?

Do you use a different cup for milk and water to help them understand the difference?

When I read about 'beakers', are these sippy cups or just regular (topless) cups?

Thanks! :)

I'd like to know this too!

I was nearly certain that my HV said that I should be trying to use sippy cups from 6 months but on reflection I thought maybe I'd misheard her??

I actually got a TT 4 month sippy cup today just so LO can play around with it and get used to it. I was just going to put some cooled boiled water in it..

I bought LO the tommee tippe value cups for his water (free flow) and he has had them since 6 months. At first he would suck the water into his mouth then just spit it straight out! We went through this for 6-7 weeks and I tried juice, but that didn't help either. Eventually he has realised that he can drink it, so my perseverence has paid off!! Its great to see him gulping it down!
As for milk, I hadn't really thought about it till someone mentioned it at the weekend (their LO is a couple of months older than mine) and apparently they can be very precious about what they drink it from, so maybe get a different style to distinguish. I think she said she was using this transition one

i would go for a free flow 1 as 1 that is not is like a bottle they have to suck to get it out they need to get use to the free flow so they can move on to a cup. I use a free flow tommie tippee cup and a Doidy Cup

Ah, good point about the free flow. We do have a doidy cup already but LO thinks this is a game of 'how quickly can I tip my milk in my lap or throw it at Mummy!'. Something to work on :)

I found the best sippy cup ever!!

Its called 360 toddler, looks a bit like a TT explora in the shape and handles, but it has no spout, is non spill and they can drink from it really easily, its from 9 months - its easier than a spouted one because it doesnt matter which bit of the edge of the cup they suck from they will get water out!
I have had the simple TT cups, a TT expolra, avent ones, and varous others and this is by the easiest for her use.

Sainsburys do them for about £3.50 https://www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Amadeus-360-Toddler-Cup/45214011

I'm using a doidy cup for water for Thomas and he seems to be managing it pretty well. Although he prefers to drink out of my glass, LOL.

I got one of these delivered with my asda shop today for £2.27!
Haven't tried it yet as my daughter is asleep but I'm going to give it a go in the vague hope she will stop trying to drink out of my glass!!

We've been using a doidy cup since 6 months for water and got the toddler 360 now for milk but she hasn't figured out that she has to suck to get anything out so I've had to take the valve etc out for her to use it

We have a doidy cup and a tommee tippee cup...she tends to use the latter as a teether (!) and the former to drink (a little!)

Bump!

Just wondering if anybody else had suggestions? The doidy is so not happening at the moment (just gets flung). Kyle happily drinks water from a TT sports beaker (with a soft spout) but am looking for suggestions for his morning and bedtime milk (as he still has them from a bottle - shucks!)

x

I love and swear by all the NUK ones. My babies are only 5.5 months, but they have never spilled with these NUK ones - they are free flow, so easy for all babies to use.

nuby.

Website is nuby-uk.com

I ordered bottles and you get a teat/drinking spout/straw and they are all silicone with one bottle. They also dont leak....brilliant!! Come with variflow so lo can suck at own pace. £5 per bottle and £4.00 delivery but great. If you do get any use promo code....roadshow. Gets you 25% off. They also do cups/beaker so worth a look around x

I get really confused with free flow etc. Should they be free flow so that they learn to drink rather than suck the liquid?

That's generally the idea of baby cups hun. I find that the NUK ones, although free flow, don't spill - which is important because they still need to get their liquids in even though learning to drink without sucking.

We use nuby sippycups at the times when she would want a bottle - she accepts them much better than other sippycups at those times - they are softspout and she can lean back and drink them without them leaking all over or her getting too much and choking on the milk. THere are different styles though and I've had to buy a few different styles to find the ones that work best for her. The others we use when out & about - as they seem to work best when she is sitting up. Some have handles and some dont. Megan prefers no handles now.

At her highchair she uses freeflow - typically playtex brand.
