BLW - Baby led weaning support thread

We have had phases where Ruby doesn't seem interested. At beginning I wrote quite a few frustrated threads saying that Ruby was not interested at all some days.

It gets easier once you know they CAN eat, then you know if they don't, they don't need it.

A, that vid is great! Miss M definitely did not appreciate her bread taken away!

Went to a new baby group run by a local breastfeeding support group today and was chatting to 3 mums who have done/are doing BLW :happydance::happydance: One baby was 9.5 months old and busy helping himself to his mum's greek salad whilst ignoring his own egg sandwiches! Nice to see/hear some success stories. :)

Well after a few days of no interest & me deciding perhaps I had started too soon and should maybe take a break George decided he liked this BLW lark again. I had 2 crumpets this morninh & he tried to grab a whole one!!! I cut it into slices and he ate about half a crumpet with very little waste!

Yay, go George x

Since yesterday Olivia has hardly eaten any food again apart from some blueberries so I think some teeth may be on the way.

Well done George! Ruby likes crumpets too.

We had sweetcorn cakes for lunch, Ruby scoffed them, along with some cherry tomatoes and nectarine.

Kian ate loads yesterday: He had abt half an apple for breafast, slept thro lunch then last night he had quite a selection...it was my sisters b-day so we had some little tea party. Kian had a bit of garlic bread (which he ate all of!!) some tomatoes which he was a huge fan of altho he ate all the soft inside and left the outside of them, some olives which he had chopped into bits...he ate a few bits, some peppers which he threw on the floor (he's had these before) some potatoes (not sure how much he ate coz he managed to crumbles them up into dust! and throw loads everywhere...i'm sure some went in his mouth!) and some banana which he had a little bite of.

he usually plays with the food more than he was yesterday...yesterday he was very into eating it and it took him ages to get bored (he used to get bored quite quickly and start throwing all his food overboard)

...and this morning his poo was a proper little stinky, darker, play dough like lump (TMI sorry) so i'm guessing he digested quite a bit of all that!

Sounds like Kian is doing well. Ruby does the same with tomatoes. She loves cherry tomatoes, cut in half, she puts a half in her mouth, chews for ages then spits out the skin! She never eats peppers when I offer, they always get played with then thrown.

Yeah we get the play doh poo too, lol that's a good description!

zane would rather be running around then eat so meal times arent much fun right now for us the little terror

Yeah I can imagine Ruby being like that when she's older! I guess if you leave it up to him whether he eats or not, he will eat what he needs. That's the BLW theory anyway!

Claire, did you make the sweetcorn cakes yourself? My hubby loves sweetcorn but I find it boring so if I can find a different way of preparing it that would be fab.

Yep I did! It was from '101 recipes for kids' BBC Goodfood magazine.

175g self raising flour
tsp baking powder
2 eggs
100g mature cheddar, grated
small can of sweetcorn
2 tbsp chives
125ml milk
Oil for frying

whisk the eggs, milk, flour and baking powder together until smooth
Stir in the sweetcorn, cheese and chives
Heat some oil in a pan and fry spoonfuls (flattened slightly) for about 1.5 mins each side.

It says to serve with ketchup, I just served with some cherry tomatoes.
I liked them, but I guess they probably are a little bit bland. Maybe they need a strong tasting accompaniment!

They're great for LO though.

Im just wondering when you girls give tomatoes do you just give the whole thing...seeds and skin included??

Also what about grapes? Thanks

lol...Kian really loved roasted peppers but last nights peppers were raw so he wasn't very impressed with them! lol

2night i made a recipe i got from the BLW forum:

potato (i used 1 fairly large sweet potato)
grated cheese (i used a mixture of chedder and mozarella)
frozen mixed veg
bread crums

i mashed up the S/potato and put that to one side,
boiled the frozen veg, then let it cool a bit, then blended it (but not so it was mushy...so that it was in tiny little bits) then mixed it with the mashed SP
then i put the cheese in the bender so it was in tiny little bits too and added that to the other two things
i added some herbs...apparently u can add whatever u feel like...i used rosemary and sage
then made burger shapes, rolled in bread crums and put in the oven until the breadcrums browned a bit.

Kian was a fan!...as was i

apparently they freeze too and the batch i made had loads left over so i'm gonna save the rest 4 speedy future meals. they hold their shape and r much easier to pick up if they get cooler (coz the cheese gets hard again) so they might b best made in advanced and served cold to LO (i didn't make them in advance so i ended up putting Kians in the freezer til it cooled....naughty really! not good 4 the freezer:blush:).

loving the recipes girls :)

George seems keen on food again today :)
After his crumpet this morning he had an early lunch of pear, rice cakes and cheese and for dinner he had asparagus, fried pepper strips and yoghurt. We also tried banana again and he spat it out and threw it on the floor ... again!

i chop tomatoes...i tried offering kian a mixture of slices and circles...both seemed to go down well!

i haven't tried grapes but i have heard u should chop them to stop the whole thing slipping down

I give cherry tomatoes or baby plum tomatoes (expensive but a better shape for her to grip) cut in half. Ruby tends to eat out all the inside and spit out the skin. The seeds are too small to be a choking hazard so I wouldn't worry about that.

I haven't given grapes yet but will do, I'll just cut in half.

off topic but i might have to make them thanks lol zane loves sweetcorn and so do i! they might taste nice if u add something like a herb cream cheese or bake them instead of frying.

i wudnt give a baby ketchup either its not really needed

Halen does this, sucks all the watery bit and the seeds out, spits the rest out. We get either cherry or normal tomatoes, If their cherry I halve them, if their normal I slice them and the half the slices.

We've tried grapes once, I halved them. He didn't like them lol

Ooh, I'm loving the recipes, definitely going to give those a try

CD, sounds like Olivia might be having teething issues, Aisling seems to cut back too when her mouth is bothering her :hugs:

I've been having some issues with Aisling lately because she seems absolutely convinced that I'm eating something different to her  She's not bothered about DH's food but keeps looking at hers and then craning her neck to look at mine - I tip my plate / bowl to show her it's the same but she has this little distrustful look on her face! I know I should probably let her have a mush with her hands in my food but  - no chance!!
