....are just some of the things I've learned from B&B! LOL!!! I'm a pure bread Canadian girl and found this site a long while back. Quickly I learned it was dominated by UK moms. It took some time, but I got the hang of your lingo! I think Boots is a store? Chav is a --douche? (lol, I think that's the north american counterpart, maybe?), and pushchair is a stroller? I laugh because I read it with my western Canadian accent and these words are like chinese to me. It takes a few reads to understand what your talking about sometimes! I'm still confused about the difference between a moses basket, and cot is. I think it's the same as our bassinet and crib, but not totally certain. Jabs I know are shots. I thought it was your slang for "shots" until someone posted a news article that said something about "jabs" in the title. Really a pointless thread, but I always wanted to share my love of you UK girls with you!

HaHa!

I don't know what a douche looks like but i saw a few chavs in the park the other day.

Sitting on the bench smoking away with babies in very expensive pushchairs, massive hoop earrings, hair tied in such away that it looked lacquered to their heads, clothes that were far to tight for their rumbuctious bodies with tits hanging out and the "spare tire" (muffin top, excess baggage....)hanging over their too low and too tight skinny jeans.

Would they be douches?

Oh dear! I am such a SNOB!

Ha ha! Yes you pretty much have it all right. A chav is a douche but one who is really common, talks in a really dopey drawn out way, dresses like they fell over in a paint shop but for some reason thinks incredibly highly of themselves. I was once talking to this Australian guy and he told me that over there they call chavs bogans! And you can spot a bogan because they never wear any shoes. Oh and they call their flip flops thongs but I guess our calling them flip flops is pretty silly

I think in the USA trailer trash would be the word for chavs really

I am too canadian!! you call the trunks of your cars Boots as well!! right? I know so much more but drawing a blank!! OH and your 5 door cars i think we call hatchbacks! took awhile to figure out how you UK people put 5 doors on a car lol

lol at this thread  us uk ladies really are quite mad. now you canadian ladies have pointed out i wonder why the hell we do call our trunk of cars boots

My eldest brother grew up in the states (different mum) and there's been a few 'lost in translation' moments - the best one being when one of my nephews was getting warned not to do something naughty again and was told he'd get his fanny smacked! I know it's childish but I couldnt stop giggling for ages.

This is brilliant!!! You got the moses basket/bassinette thing right too!

We may speak to the same language but there are alot of differences in our slang. When I see a chav I often say they look chavtastic!!! lol

I was watching an american show and they were talking about bangs it took me ages to work out that bangs is a fringe...I think it is anyway. Also I remember watching pretty woman when I was alot younger and she said she had a hole in her pantyhose...I was thinking what thats...oh tights!!!! lol

I'm sure there are plenty more differences in the words we use but I can't think of them right now.

I couldn't work out bangs either! I read something about someone getting their bangs in their eyes... I was like what now???

the one I find the funniest is the American word 'Fanny' meaning bottom.

A fanny pack is bloody hilarious to us Brits :haha:

Here in scotland we call chavs "neds"

The other one is 'thong' - for americans, thongs are flip-flops. For us, thongs are little knickers! :haha: I love that one!!

This one gets me every time! I was watching Americas Next Top Model the opther day and one of the girls said to Tyra '..and I've got a tasty fanny' - I nearly fell of my chair!!!!

...i still dont really know what an OB/GYN is
OB/GYN is obstetrics and gynecology. I don't think we have them here - if we do, they are not too common.

 at Neds  in this part of wales aside from Chavs we also call them "Nesbitts" though a Nesbitt can also mean a skanky dirty kind of person as well
some welsh people on here might know the welsh spoof rap band Goldie Lookin' Chain (named after the big fake chunky gold stuff that chavs love to sport that turns your skin green lol)
