breastfed babies result in better behaved children?

i dont think the support is that bad tbh. Its there if you ask.

We've agreed about this before. I don't know if NHS Lothian is particularly good but there was a lot about. Just how many of those BF newpapers did you get before you left? By the time we were back in SCBU for the second time I had about 8 different editions of it!

yep! i also had a mw obviously specially trained in bf sit with me in post natal for atleast 30mins to make sure her latch was ok and i had no problems. I do think RIE is an unusual maternity unit though. its very goodd and with the new birthing centre i think it ticks all the boxes. theyre really supportive and promoting homebirth too

Yeah but that's the trouble, it's a postcode lottery. Most people I know were given very little help.

All the nurses in SCBU were great. They always also said if they had never BF themselves which somehow was helpful too. We had a BF group at our health centre as well as the fortnightly one at Dobbies. I also took part in a BF event at Vogrie once but it was baltic BF outside in April!

unfortunatly the mws in my area who were available when i had zane were not supportive at all. i asked for help to just be told its fine its fine when something wasnt. we had other things going on in our lives so i couldnt go on the internet and ask for help or find numbers to call ect.
i was let down by my local hospital and its staff.

but this time i will be using my doula to help me with breastfeeding so im feeling very possitive about it

the bf section here is full of very helpful advice. obviously no help practically but sometimes you just need 'its ok its normal' type emotional support.

Yeah same here. Where did you deliver? I delivered at the RVI but I have heard that South Tyneside is just as bad. Did you deliver at Hexam? Now I know the breastfeeding support at Hexam is crap. I have a "friend" who is the breastfeeding counsellor at Hexam hospital - and she know's very little about breastfeeding. She's another of the "breastpumps get all the milk out" misinformed idiots. And she's never breastfed any of her 3 children. Really. That's the kind of people the NHS employs to advise new mums.

It is a postcode lottery, and in some areas initiation rates are still only around the 20% mark that is rates of women who try BF, possibly only once, at birth; you can bet your bottom dollar ladies in those areas who do want support cannot get it.

It would be 'worse' on MN and BC (I haven't said the full names for fear of spamming). B&B is the most pro-FF forum I know of.

I have to say I find this to be true, I find myself tiptoeing round breastfeeding on this forum much more than I do on others. (admittedly not so much on this thread) I wonder if that's because most of the members here are British, and our rates are so low due to the awful lack of support?

MN is deffo British. I think BC is too. I can only hypothesise and say it might be a class issue? As MN is very middle class indeed. Seriously guys, you think I'm bad? I'm a pussy cat compared to the MN Breastfeeding Mafia.

It is ashame that its such a postcode lottery :(

& I dont think breastfeeding has anything to do with class.

Nope, RVI, would loved to have delivered at hexham but he was too early. I'm surprised the bf support isn't very good because I had my post natal checks there and they were fantastic.

Studies suggest that class is an influencing factor in how long children are breastfed for https://journals.cambridge.org/down...83a.pdf&code=0dd4529e683c0154a22b52fd9ff5084a

This doesn't mean I think all bf's are middle class and all ff's are working class (before anyone jumps on me) it just means there is somewhat of a trend indicated in this study.

meh, trends change cnstantly. i read an artical recently about how the trend has changed in regards to csections. It used to be that rates for lower class women were very high, and now its totally changed and middle class women now have more sections

As above, studies have shown that it does. More middleclass women breastfeed, and for longer periods. I think it's a real shame. And as breastfeeding is free, it makes little sense.

It makes ecenomic sense for working class women to breastfeed and yet they are less likely to do it

Ahhhh RVI! I loved my labour and delivery at the RVI. But the aftercare was woeful. I was left alone to deal with my newborn. It was night time and I was in a dark, empty ward alone *shudders at the memory*

Where I come from, bfing is more common among poorer families. Even if a mum cant BF, she will not use formula as there always a friend or a family member who can wet nurse her baby.

Middle class or rich families use formula more as they can afford it & it fits their lifestyle.

But you cant find a trend as BFng is the norm here esp for the 1st 6 months, it's not very common for a mum not to try bfing & go directly to formula at birth.

I'm the only one among my friends & family members who exclusively ff from day one as I didnt have any milk to bf.

I didn't know that about the middle east!

We dont get any tax credit or government support. Unemployment rate is very high (I'm not talking about the UAE & the gulf region, those are rich countries & locals are supported by their govenrments). I'm talking about countries like Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, etc.

FFing is very expensive, this is why it's not so common. BFing is free & it's the norm. We dont even have BFing vs FFing arguments. NIP is not sth weird or new. A fully covered mum will BF her baby & even a toddler in public. No one will give her a second look when she's feeding in public.

Many of my friends & family members offered to BF Omar when he was tiny, & my aunt BF him few times & she offered us expressed BM. No one will critisize a mum for ffing or question her dicision.

I didnt even know there was sth called BFing vs FFing before coming to BnB xx

I think on BnB there are just much more mature women than there are on other forums. That's what I like about it. Sometimes I take a look at other forums and the flaming just scares me! I swear some people think internet forums are places where they can make other people feel like crap to make themselves feel better, or a place to act however they want with no regard to how it might make others feel.

That sounds wonderful!
