Brita Water Jugs

We live in a very hard water area and there is chlorine present in our tap water too (I keep tropical fish so I've done bazillions of different tests LOL).
I use a Brita water jug to filter our water for drinking. I wash the jug out each time I change the filter cartridge (approx once a month - it's the jug with a little digi display to tell you when the cartridge is due changing). The jug is stored in the fridge.
Every so often I notice that there are little grainy bits around the edge of the filter (above the filtered water level not below) and sometimes a faint hint of green algae.

Anyone else experience this?
What can I do to avoid it?
 
Yes we get the green algea, I just take the whole jug apart and get the bleach spray on it then soak it all in hot soapy water.
 
I washed mine every day.. I thought you were meant to?
 
We've had the green algae too, i cba to wash it every day i'm too lazy :lol: i just soaked mine in red hot soapy water and then scrubbed it with a scrubbing brush, i don't think there is anything you can do to avoid it though but i might be wrong x

I'm not sure about washing it every day - I'm too lazy for that LOL I don't use the full just every day. I'm trying to up my water intake but it's a 3L jug and I don't think I could manage that much :D
I guess I just carry on giving it a good wash each time I change it and in between if I see anything and try not to think too hard about it :wacko:
 
We get the gritty bits but I'm too lazy to wash it every day!
 
I need a new filter for mine. Actually my water goes a bit gritty if my filters stopped working
