Bumpkins & Babies Chat Thread

Eswift, I went to my local surestart place 2 weeks ago, and yeah, they were very young. (not that that's a bad thing, but it just made me feel old & past it coz I culdn't relate to them on the same level). I go every weds now to my local breastfeeding group though, and that I have to say has been brilliant. Great age range of mum's, as well as babies, with expert advice & support, and a really frienly atmosphere. If you do go to yours, do let me know how it goes! :)
As for your son, you reminded me of when my lil brother started puberty. He ran downstairs & ran around the lounge like a turkey, shouting, 'Mum, I've got puberty on my boy bits!!!' It would've been cute if it wasn't for the fact he was 14 at the time, bless him. At 22 he's 2 feet taller but none the more hairier, so I'm guessing he;s still going through it, hehe. Hope the chat with your DH goes well with him, and it's great that he felt he could talk to you about that kinda thing too; shows you've got a good relationship with him.

How's everyone doing today?
I got rudely awoken by Harry farting!!! It was a proper man-fart that last a good few seconds. He woke me, my OH & hinself up in the process & had a look on his face as if to say, 'did I just do that?!' Made me laugh. :) Taking after his daddy already... I can already see them having afrting competitions in a few years time & Harry winning, lol.

Morning all, well HV is due today so thought i'd better make an attempt to at least clean the lounge! Discovered I shouldn't hoover as it hurts my stomach oppps! Managed to do a load of washing, the washing up, showered and dressed and cleaned the bath and toilet. (not sure where the energy came from) Noah seems chilled out today (that will be from the lack of sleep yesterday and last night!)

haven't been to any groups yet I am doubtful about the ones at the surestart as I live in a bad area so I wonder what the people will be like and I have a feeling they'd see me as ancient at 30. I'd like to find some groups to go to though but not sure how to find some.

Afternoon ladies!!

Well last night was fun....Earl had me up virtually evry hour to eat and generally be awake - why is it in the middle of the night your tether is so much shorter? lol Thankfully he went down from 7.30-10.30 so i caught up on some sleep on the sofa. Feel bad now though as none of the housework has been done hardly bar his feeds and clothes, but I guess we can cope on beans on toast and dirty bed sheets lol.

We're off to clinic this aft to see what he weighs. He's grown massively so I'm thinking we may be in the mid-10lbs. We shall see......

Hope we're all ok today - be on later. Hugs :hugs: xx

Maffie ~ Ask you HV about groups in your area, she should know about them... Good Luck!

I took CC to the library today, no books on puberty in there at all! They've ordered a couple in for me, on DS's card so it won't cost! LOL...

Just had a lovely smile off CC guess she's got wind!!! right nappy change here we come...

Hello ladies, in the last week my little one has seemed to have changed to a crying baby, what am i doing so wrong!!!
He cries after i have feed him, and he has got all his wind up, doesnt want more milk, and i have tried water, we have tried him on infacol and gripe water too, feel so helpless, do you think i should change his milk or the bottles, were on sma gold at present and toppee tippee bottles, im so tired and upset all the time, i feel like im a crap mum!!! has anyone change to the aptimal milk? i know its not colic, cause its not all the time, you can settle him, then 20 mins later he will cry, and its not every feed, i dont know if hes just trying to get my attention??? I Have heard that doc brown bottles are good?? any ideas and help would be grateful

HV has been seemed a waste of time, dont think she's coming again  Noah was weighed and is now 8lbs was over that but she knocked a bit off due to babygro and nappy. She said I seem very confident with him and was surprised I haven't been around alot of babies. I dont feel confident at 3 in the morning when I need sleep

HV said to try the sure start for groups, think I might check out the local churches to see if they have anything on.

Sam :hugs: is there a chance your LO is just having a growth spurt or a few niggly days? I know Noah has been like that and it goes as fast as it came.

I've looked at the Dr Brown bottles as i'm not sure what to use when I express but boy are they expensive!

Mornin' Girls!

Well last night we changes Autumns routine a touch, I bathed her and got her ready for bed and then her Dad took her to get her to sleep and lay her down. Boy, did we pay for it last night!!! She slept from 9 to 1, then woke up at 3, 5 and 6. I think we'll stay with him doing the bottle and me bath/bed!! lol.

Aimee ~ Good news re Earls arm! I know what you mean about getting pissy easier in the night. I was getting PISSED last night! I've been spoiled with getting sleep the last couple of weeks and the waking up thing last night half killed me lol. Then I got mad and said "WTF do you want?!" and the husband said to me "Getting frustrated isn't going to stop her" .. I nearly knocked him out :)

Kte ~ Re your hubbies schedule and getting up at 2am. It will take a lil bit to get in the routine and for Chloe to catch on, but why don't you try the feed/bath/bed routine after her 8pm feed, then she'll get the hang of it and will start sleeping longer. Hopefully until your OH gets up at 2am.
It was hard the first week with Autumn as she was still on the 3 hr routine, but gradually she got the idea and started to sleep longer and longer and when we don't change her routine as last night can go up to 7 hrs.

KrisKitten ~ Tommy is adorable!

Flora ~ Yesterday must have been the day for pooing lol! Autumn did the same thing. I swear she gets a baby hippo to fill her nappies when I aint looking because let me tell you, that amount from a lil baby ... it aint normal!!!

Eswift ~ How about getting the DS a book that explains to him what happens .. My family did this for me (along with talk to me) when I hit puberty and I loved the book! I mean this was an age ago, but we got it from WH Smith, went in and chose it together, It was worded for children and very informative.

Sam ~ You aint a crap mamma, babies get grouchy, it's nothing you're doing wrong. Perhaps he has belly ache after he's finished, or is just over tired. Autumn is a little moo bag when she's over tired and will scream the walls down! As you say maybe he just wants a cuddle and your attention. Another thing could be a growth spurt, they get really fussy and needy during these periods. *hugs* to you, hang in there :)

Re bottles we use the playtex vented bottles, they are supposed to stop them sucking in so much air as they feed.

This is a link to them: https://www.playtexproductsinc.com/infant/bottleFeeding_reusables.asp I use the wide version.

Ok lil miss has woken up! Have a great day :)

Hi girls - just a quickie before i feed Earl.

Just been and weighed him - 3 weeks 2 days and he weighs 10lb 15oz (was a little disappointed as it flashed up 11lb before dropping lol)

I guess all that food is going somewhere good!:happydance:

Eswift ~ I too am counting 10am as morning :haha:

It took me 2 and a half hours to settle Chloe last night once we went up to bed. I took her up at 8.30 and she finally settled about 11.00 and wouldn't you know it she was hungry again! So then another hour later (thanks windy pops!) she finally went to sleep, needles to say I was overjoyed when OH's alarm went off at 1.30am at which point I went downstairs to pop the kettle on and bring up some more feeds for Chloe and found cat poop on the kitchen floor - nice! Really wasn't in the mood for that! Bloomin' cats, a bit of wind and rain and they go all soft!

I am hoping she isn't developing a temperature, I must keep an eye on it, I have stripped her down to see if that helps.

I think I may give her a few days at bottle then bed and introuduce that bath in a week. She gets a bit worked up with her bath still so I don't want to wind her up then spend ages calming her down. OH bought her the cutest rubber duck today so I have been singing the seasame rubber ducky song lol.

OH and I sat in some of the sure start classes whilst waiting for the MW appointments. They are a good idea but not something I would be interested in, there were mums a lot younger than me and they sat on the floor in a group and the leader brought them juice in. I found it all a bit strange ~ a cuppa will do please! lol Plus having people sit in and use the room as a waiting room put me off, how can you discuss things properly that way? There are other local groups that I am interested in and I need to check out the swimming lessons for parents and babies too as I sooooo want to take Chloe swimming!

Okay, off to make some yummy fish finger sarnies :D

:hugs: all x

aimeelou, i meant to say about earl's arm- that's great news! bhas he got full movement completely now? is he happier as a result?

chaos- i agree, no baby should be able to poo that much!!!!!!!!!! ewwwww! Harry has done 3 so far today... i think he's beginning to work on a one in one out principle, as he always seems to wait until he's on my boob, then lets rip some mighty, squirgley farts, so i have to change him, then get him latched on again, lol.

maffie; i did a google search for breastfeeding groups in my area... there's only 1, which is theone i go to, lol. try googling it, or ask on the bf-ing threads, as someone might be close to your area n can help you out?

sam, sorry tp hear george is being like that... it must be really frustrating for you, but i'm sure you're doin everything right!

kte: we were going to take harry swimming last sunday (oh can use the pool where he works anytime before/after work, so it's free & private, we take our nephews a lot too) but so far we haven't been able to find any swim nappies small enough for him :dohh: i have found a great re-usable funky coloured one that i've put on his xmas list that is size adjustable for 10lbs n over, so by xmas, it should be perfect, so i cant wait to get him in the pool!

eswift: i had an illustrated book called 'growing up' when i was 11 that my mum got me & from what i remember, it was great- simple, clear, non sexualised & easy to understand etc. it's good that the library are ordering in for you tho.

have any of you had the dates for your postnatal check ups yet? i got mine in the post today.... for 21st december!!! harry will be 11 weeks by then. so much for 6 weeks, lol. makes me wonder when they'll get round to doing the immunisations he's meant to have at 8 weeks!?! :dohh:

Hey girls. Well I have come home to my parents for a few days for a break cos OH is doing my head in! Have had a lovely day cos my mum watched James for me while I had my hair cut and she even paid for it! So feeling much better now. Have got to go to a friends funeral on Friday and its being held at the same place as my grandad was cremated so that will be a bit hard.

On an up note...took James to clinic to be weighed yesterday. He was 6lb 13 born, 7lb 5oz at 2 weeks. And he was 8lb 10oz yesterday.

Thanks loves for the book suggestions...

I'm sure that sometimes when babe's have grumpy days, they just want cuddles and reassurance. The world is such a big place to be when you're so small... CC has had a rather whingy day, she's just cuddled into my shoulder at the moment zzzzing for britain... (Each time I've put her in her basket today she's cried and woke herself up, think she's holding tight to a little bit of wind; so being on her back won't help get it out)

My back ache had eased slightly after my walk, but after feeding CC for an hour, cooked & eaten tea, going too and fro to the basket, bending up and down to pick CC up; My back is really aching now... Come on home OH, I'd like a warm bath!

LOL DS has just told me a chair lift is a bit of fun for when you're 80! LOL Same way as he told me last week I can look forward to free swimming lesson; Only 29 years to go until I'm 60! LOL Little Sod!?!

Flora ~ they automatically made Chloe's appointment but i have to ring up and make my own.

I had my postnatal check yesterday and all is well :) I had to make it myself tho! Went and booked it a couple weeks ago and booked tommys 8 week while i was there yesterday (when i first booked mine they hadnt sorted their december calender yet) The woman on reception was amazingly dense tho, i said to her ' i need to make an appointment for his 8 week check up, hes 6 weeks tomorow' She nodded had a tap around on the computer and said 'well we could squeeze you in tomorow afternoon if u like' with a big smile and a face like she was doing me a favour by getting the appointment early?!?!?!? Lol i sed 'For his *8 week* check?' and she looked at me blankly for about 10 seconds before shaking her head and muttering 'hmmm so youd prefer another 2 weeks...' looking very confused i hadnt jumped at the chance of an earlier appointment. I dont think she quite understood the concept :dohh:
Um why is it, as a young mum (18), i seem to be the only bumpkin mummy to have not heard about the surestart groups? Iv started going to a young mums group in my area on thurdays but tbh im getting on better with the 2 women that run it than the other girls their. Honestly they scare me, they seem to resent their kids??? I rlly feel for the a cuple of the babies coz i get the sense that their mothering is purely 'keeping them alive' with none of the bonding and enjoying them there should be. Im sure they have their reasons but it just doesnt sit right with me. Imo tommy may not have been planned but i wouldnt change him for anything.
As for night feeds i know what u mean! Im miss patience in the day but as soon as my head touches the pillow im queen evil. Luckily im managing to maintain patience with tommy, my OH is the one suffering with it as i dont mind having a go at him  have made it up to him most mornings tho with a cooked brekky so he cant complain rlly.
Am all excited at wat iv decided to get tommy for christmas! One of those personalised christmas story books, you know the kind where he is part of the story? You can send off for them online, that way every year as he gets older (till hes too big obv lol) we can get out his special christmas story :)
Obviously i doubt hell appreciate it this year but i thought itd be nice to know he got got it for his very first christmas =]
Hope every1 is well,
Sam76 ur rlly not a bad mum, my cuzn was a rly screamy baby too 4 my aunty and she was wonderful. Hes now 6 yrs old nd since his baby days has always been a happy content kid. Sum babies just like to practise using their lungs unfortunatly. Hang in there :hugs:
Hope every1s doin ok, im off 2 put tommy down, shower n get to bed myself.
Gnyt xxxxxxxx

Morning all,

Wow managed a shower! Yipee (lol makes me sound a scruff, I usually bath when OH is home) but this morning Chloe was Zzzz'ing away so I decided to go for it) Bliss!

She is twitching a bit so I am guessing a feed will be soon. She changed her feed times last night, they were all an hour earlier! Well, 8.30 was same, then she woke at 10, 12, 3, 5 and 7. I ran out of prepared bottles so I had to get up . . . it's been quite nice and if I am quiet I think I can keep her snoozing until 10 so I can get some things done before her awake time and then we can spend some quality time together.

LK~ Sorry to hear about your friends funeral, I hope you will be okay tomorrow :hugs:

Eswift~ Hope the bath helped :hugs:

Kris~ The way you write about Tommy, your enthusiasm for being his mummy, it's really nice to read. You seem really on the ball and enjoying it :flower:

A few things to do today ~ make my 6 wk appointment!!! Write to work to say when I intend to come back (sigh, ugh!) and send out christening invites (fun paperwork lol!) I have my best friend over today too, haven't seen her in weeks so we will be having a good ol' natter and buckets of tea

Hope you all have a good day ladies :hugs:

Rachel had her first immunisations yesterday :(, she was such a brave wee lamb. She only cried for a bit then fell asleep for a few hours. She woke up screaming at one point in evening but after a cuddle session she soon settled. She doesn't get her developmental checks until 12 week appt due to her being premature.

Can't believe how quick time is flying by!
xx

Good morning ladies,

How are we all today? Last night was more like the usual Earl so I'm in a better mood today lol. We put him down at 9.30 and he slept through til 2 (hubby starts work at 6am so we were asleep by 10!) and then woke up at 5.30 (when the alarm went off at 5am) so we've had a good morning really.

Flora - I have been meaning to let you know about Earl's arm (baby brain lol) - the Dr discharged him without a second thought. It had stopped being overtly painful for him about a week ago (we can now hold him on his left hand side which we hadn't been able to do at all) and he no longer screams bloody murder when you dress him (although he's still a little unsure - hubby thinks it's negative reinforcement which will hopefully not have stuck). His arm is actually growing in strength everyday and his favourite trick is to grab his bottle with both hands and draw it into his mouth (we do feed him....honest!). The Dr had said that within 1 more week he's happy that there will be no discernable difference. To be fair, I was at the clinic yesterday and the HV there couldn't tell.

I have been a little bit concerned about the lack of knowledge about Erb's palsy among MW's and HV's. It's apparently quite common but get's dismissed as a 'lazy limb' but if it's not recognised and you don't do movements everyday you can be left with a birth defect rather than just a birth injury (Dr only told us this at his check up....probably best as I was panicking enough as it was). I also found out that this injury can mask other injuries in the nervous system such as Cerebral Palsy so it's really important that people get it checked.

But, we don't have to worry.....Dr signed him off. We have to go back when he is 6 months to check that we don't have any lingering lack of strength, in which case he'll get a wristband to wear. However, I've been told by Dr Tim that when he starts to roll over on his own his arm will take over (at the moment he's still favouring his right a lot more but apparently it's common in all babies to favour the right).

Anyhoo......

Today should be fun. Earl is in his chair (I swear he has learnt to bounce the thing as he is flailing around like a mad thing with a really puzzled look on his face! lol) at the moment so I've actually managed a yoghurt and a cuppa. First time all week I've managed any form of breakfast! lol

Right, best be off.....only 1 hour until lunch time for the youngster and I want him to have some tummy time before it (gotta get that arm moving!!) Have a good day ladies xx

p.s. We have to make an appointment for BOTH of us. We can't make it before 4 weeks though so I have to wait until next week. I've been trying to make myself an appointment but it's always blooming engaged. I want to get back on the pill before we end up with a back to back pregnancy....don't think my old bod could cope with that, let alone the bank balance!! lol. :dohh: Be on later xx

Hello ladies, in the last week my little one has seemed to have changed to a crying baby, what am i doing so wrong!!!

Hi Sam

My LO cries more often now as well when I know he's not hungry/wet/has wind/doesnt want a cuddle. I have to say I find he settles with a dummy which I know isnt for everyone but.....like earlier he was crying on my knee but once he had his dummy he was happy to sit there looking around him and listen to me singing

It definitely wont be anything that you are or are not doing which causes it. Just remember its their only form of communication.................and it means everything which makes it difficult for us mums to figure out!!

Evening ladies. Had a good night with James last night. Settled him to sleep at 11pm and he woke at 4am, took 5oz of milk, and slept til 9.30am! Then we went into town and did a little bit of shopping. Didn't stay for long cos Peter Andre was turning on the christmas lights this evening so it was mental down there even though it was only 12.30. Got back to my nans at 2pm and James had another 4.5oz of milk and then snuggled in and we watched some tv...looked down and James was asleep, turned round to tell my nan and she was asleep too lol. Staying with my parents tonight so we came here at 4.30pm and James has been having lovely cuddles with his grandad while we wait for his nanny to get home from work. Hope everyone is having a good day and not being too blown about by this horrible weather!!

Morning all, I anticipate were all up, just sorting out little ones! Typically Chloe is being so beautiful (after much wind and projectile sick last night) and sleeping through . . . I however woke up anywoay and am in a bit of pain, to do with my bowel movements. I have posted a thread in post natal support (here: bowl issues TMI but need help) I would appreciate anyone's help.

Thank :flower:
