Jo, the fondant I am talking about is the one you roll out , you know to cover cakes :)
Gum trag is a powder and you just add some of that to it to make Gumpaste :)

You can buy gumpaste already made though, it has different names....... flowerpaste/modelling paste.

If you are just using a small amount I would buy it readymade, if you think you will use alot buy the Gum Tragcanth and add it to plain old fondant

I made some cadburys caramel the other day, they were lovely - i just did a normal chocolate sponge and pressed in a piece of the bar into each case - twas lovely, they had a chocolatey caramel centre...nom nom
Well iv had quite a day, been trying to bake a cake in secret from my parents, as a suprise for their anniversary. ONly thing is theyve been in the same house all day apart from an hour and a half this morning.
So i decided to chuck together a few butterfly cupcakes to explain the baking smell and they went in about half an hour (12!) so iv got a new batch in the oven...shall upload a pic in a while. They arent very impressive looking as its just whipped cream and sponge (no1 likes buttercream :() but they are v tasty :) xxx

Thank you love but am very dense and I am sorry for that please forgive me.:flower:
The only roll out stuff I can find is https://www.craftcompany.co.uk/acatalog/Sugarpaste_For_covering_Cakes.html
could I add Gum Trag to that? If I bought a big white one? and could Iadd colour paste to that?

because the modelling ones seem quite expensive compared

I just want to diddle and experiment really, so don't want to spend a lot for a butterfly to stick on a cupcake LOL.

Also does it keep well?
xx

Oh god, just tried out a carrot cake receipe as the wife of a colleague made a beautiful one. She gave me the recipe and I followed it to the T and it's crap. I think she's missed out sugar from the receipe? Maybe you can advise?

7fl oz sunflower oil
4 free range eggs
4 tbls clear honey
2tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
pinch of salt
1tsp vanilla extract
6 oz carrots grated
butter for greasing.

What do you think ladies, sugar and how much? Is that all that's missing. God I'll have to go into work and say his wife's recipe what not right :dohh:

Theres no flour either from what i can see?
Im not to sure of the amounts tho im afraid...i dont know if the old weigh the eggs trick would work here as there are so many other ingredients?
Sorry!
Ok heres my cupcakes from today, ill be decorating the other cake over night after everyones in bed so shall upload pics tomorow.

yeah the modelling stuff is expensive.... I cant believe the price of that dr oetker colours! You can get it in tesco fo £2!
You can buy the white roll out fondant in supermarkets  They usually all do their own brand or you can get regal ice in some.

The gum trag is about £3-4 a tub but will last well.
Yeah you can add colour pastes to your rollout stuff, just dip a skewer in it and push it into the icing then knead it till its right through.

If its a strong colour probably best to use food safe rubber gloves cos some of them dye really bad!!
I had hydrangia blue hands for about 3 days once!!

Once you have modelled them and they are dry they will keep for months! Just stick them in a plastic tub till you are ready to use them :)

Thank you, you are a star :hugs: :flower:

How long will it last if opened but not modelled?

I best borrow some gloves from work then

I bought 2 ... Yes 2! Cupcake books today  one I had been looking at on eBay and I found it in waterstones and the other I was looking at in waterstones and loved it!! Will post the names tomorrow :) sooo looking forward to trying some of the yummy recipe and decorations xx

phew castle cake finished!! just done now.....and kitchen a mess!! LOL

sites been down a while today...which is actually quite a good thing because ive been able to keep up with this thread LMAO xxx

hope everyone is enjoying baking!

Bleugh:sick: I made some Angels food blueberry cupcakes today from a recipe in Hello mag and they are rank!!! They taste really meringuey. OH hit the nail on the head when he said they taste like iced gems. And they're really rubbery too. - DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO MAKE THESE, PLEASE LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES!

Only saving grace is that they look pretty as I heated up some blueberries and then passed them through a sieve then added them to my buttercream. Made a lovely pinky purple colour!

I've just finished my Blue blossom birthday cake! What was supposed to be a simple cake seemed to take forever!!
Still go a few bits to add so will take pics tomorrow :)

Pics Tracey!!!!

I got midway through carving the cannabis leaf........ ARGH!! I've abandoned it for a while its doing my head in!

i made a birthday cake for my son- but used a packet mix to make the actual cake. Then made icing and decoartions by myself. Asked my son to help too with decorations- he enjoyed it- although abit messy but it was ok as it was just for the family members.

but i do make cakes from scratch too- have become good in making banana and walnut cake. make it quite often whenever i have bananas which are ripe.

So did their anniversary cake,
the fondant went a bit bumpy coz i couldnt use buttercream as they dont like it but hey ho...i think i did ok
had it as a suprise for them so was up till 8am this morning decorating it after they went to bed. Had it waitng for them with some roses and a card this evening.
