Wow......

Right ladies please please please can you help.
I have bought some tins....they are 9 inch...and nearly 3cm deep...is this 'average' would i make up two sponges then a filling? Any tips for icing the cake? i have a smoother to help. Might keep it simple with polka dots. I roll out the icing on my kitchen surface normally.....but always find it messy...like when i try to cover cake...will it rip?
?????help please??????

xx

your 9 inch tins will be fine, use a 7 egg mix then split it between the 2.... the recipe is on the other thread :)

as long as you dont roll it out too thin it shouldnt rip, dont get disheartened if your first one doesnt go to plan!!

The cupcakes I did for the christening, it is a good job they were a gift as I would not have felt happy charging for them, some of them just don't look right to me.
Odd thing is these also seemed to leak butter/grease, the actual buns not the Icing, i could see grease marks on the bottom of the boxes, that is not right is it?
I have never had this before, I blame the Wilton cases.

Ahh Jo they are fab hun well done, dont know about the greasy part though, ive never had that happen

Sarah i usually do a "crumb coating" on my cakes to help keep the shape and make them nice and smooth but i know not everyone does that, basically its just a very very thin layer of buttercream to hold the crumbs in, then put your usual layer over the top and smooth it.

When you put the icing on the cake pull it upwards and kind of push it to tuck it in and shape it around the cake, dont pull it down as thats when its likely to tear :)

oh Jo they look fab!!
Whats happening in the world! Everyones cakes seem to be leaking, sinking or colapsing!!

It could be the wilton cases Jo, they are quite thin arent they?

I just got an order for my very first christening cake..... i am excited!!! I have wanted to do one for a while!

Also a little mermaid cake, and a tigger cake for August! :D

Oh the woman came for her wasp and LOVED it! I've been cutting up the spare base cake today and giving it away to neighbours and friends so i gave her a box of it away with her too!

it seems never ending! Still got half of it left and am trying to think of who else I can phone to come and take some away!!

Wow you are going to be a busy bee

I think it must be the cases, I thought Wilton ones would be better and thicker than they are, they were also smaller than I expected.

Well It is my dads birthday next week (thurs so I need to get cracking on his cake, but as I have had 2/3 orders placed for Cupcakes I have decided to cheat a bit.

I'm using shop bought *gasp* madeira cake, as it seems a bit denser for me to cut and carve, I have all the stuff in to bake it if I balls up but thought I would try and save myself some time, will you all still love me even for cheating?

haha! No, you are quite right!!! I will certainly consider it if god forbid anyone wants a bloody wasp cake again!!!

TJG can't you freeze it for another project?

i think you can but i dont, its like anything really, never the same after you freeze it!

no i know only some foods do taste ok after a while. oo send me some i can't be arsed to make cake lol

LOL! It chocolate cake too, and normally I would have scoffed that but it had some vanilla buttercream inbetween one of the layers and I cant stand that!!!
