Cake Making & Baking Group

Food hygeine, get your kitchen approved with environmental health, register as self emp and get insurance. That's about it. You can do your food hygeine online xx

do you still need to registar yourself self employed if your not doing it as a full time job??

Lovely cakes everyone!

I didn't think you needed to be registered as self employed until you earned a certain amount?

Also what does your kitchen need to be like or have for environmental health?

Ooooh love the angry birds ones...

Andrea I just think of the bum of jeans like stitching

Yes because your taking money. :) Its classed as a business because your selling something. Its not in the same category as a car boot sale.

I've just been made redundant! Nice! So going to see if I can get a job at one of the local bakeries to me. They are independant not Greggs lol. So I hope I can :)

Hello ladies!

I'm going to start baking cup cakes and biscuits ;)

Not for profit but just for fun, I promised I would bake for christmas this year so thought I'd start practicing now  so that's the diet out of the window :dohh:

Any advice or typical rookie errors I should know about?

Thanks guys!

So do i have to do all that food hygiene/self employed/ kitchen inspected no matter what i earn/make? what if i just carried on doing cakes for family and friends without proper advertising...is that allowed?

Sorry for the millions of questions

I just finished the birthday cake for my aunt which will hopefully make the 75 mile trip :haha: it's vanilla sponge with lemon buttercream :)

wow gorgeous cake :cloud9: hope they last...think I might be chicken and put the cupcakes on once I got there :dohh: Looks gorgeous

If your taking money then no its illegal as your are 'selling' them something so its classed as a business :)

My nephew finally arrived after being 10 days late so I am making him a box of cupcakes, obviously not for him cos all he can have is milk  but mummy and daddy will eat them :)

Gorgeous cakes Emmy.. :) hope it makes the journey, update us :)

Lol I'm still in two minds as to whether I should take them off but they seem sturdy... then again it's OH driving today :haha:

One more question: For your cupcakes do you beat the mixture with blender or do you just turn it over using a whisk or wooden spoon?

Emmy - That is a fab cake x Hope it arrives safely x

Piperette - I use a hand held mixer, really want a kitchen aid mixer thanks to laura lol x

Cake almost made it! The box was too flimsy really but it wasn't too bad :)

So you don't need to "fold the mixture in" like you do with muffins for expample, but mix them properly with the mixer/blender instead?

I just whisk the whole thing right to the end.

So sugar and marg in together, whisked until fluffy.
While still whisking I add an egg at a time and a few spoonfuls of flour till everything is used, whisk for a few seconds more then use :)

I find using room temp eggs works best for a fluffy sponge :)

I make all my sponges by hand but use a mixer for my buttercream.

Emmy the cake looks Fab. Love the new ones Orangesox.

Oh and yes, if you are bringing in money as a form of income rather than a one off thing (If you did 5 or 6 cakes a year I'd see this as a one off. Any orders more frequent is a trade) you need to register as self emp - however you do NOThave to pay tax until to reach the earnings threshold at about £7k
