The £500 sure start grant was a joke, no one ever offered me £500. If you get pregnant you should make sure you can support the child yourself.

wow sorry didn't think it would cause a debate just thought it might be useful information to those who didn't know yet and were taking it into consideration when budgeting or what not. just to answer lalababy2010 bbc news defo said that the 500 would be stopping. also just to say yes some benifits in this country are being handed out to people who don't need them but there are a number of factors that have contributed to the debt of the uk and the benifits were brought in to lessen the divide between the rich and the poor in this country. with VAT having now gone up and minimum wage having stayed the same the cost of living is becoming too much of a stretch and therefore benifits are a good thing for those who are deserving and if they are on offer then it shouldn't be held against anybody on here who take advantage of them.

The £190 grant really helped me towards things for LO. You cannot comment on our society and living costs if you don't live in the UK, sometimes I sense a hint of jealousy and childishness with things like this and a lot of people take a 'it's not fair' attitude. I'm sure if you were entitled to it you would take it.

Just wondering about the surestart grant though, are you still entitled if you're due in January, like I am? I'll only be entitled once LOs here so would like to know?

Americans don't get anything like it because they don't pay so much taxes. America generally finds the UK too socialist. We do deserve these because this is the type of democratic society us Brits expect. We pay SO much, we expect it to help every pregnant woman despite her social class. Just like we expect the NHS because we all equally pay for it :L
Basically, we're annoyed because we're paying more atm for the previous government's bad judgement and we're getting a lot less!

Sure Start is staying (yay!) but the child trust fund is scrapped

And at the end of the day we prefer paying more tax so we get free healthcare and help for families who need it. And I think it's disgusting what's being taken away

i know im doomed if they scrap that. Its so unfair that they take ema and stuff. I dont WANT to claim benefeits and only want to till i finish college and get a job but its gunna be pretty damn hard for me to get to college!
How are kids that come from poorer backgrounds supposed to get a good job?
I would LOVE to write mr. priminister a letter telling him exactly what i think of him and his stupid policies

I know, they are just trying to make the poor poorer and the rich richer. I hate the conservative party, that's all they ever have been like! If I cant go to college and university because it will be impossible for me' otherwise because all my family work, then I wont be able to get a decent job with a decent wage that will keep me' and LO financially secure. Then I'll have to claim more benefits to survive! Taking things like that away is shooting themselves in the foot to be honest, unless they take the other benefits too and we all end up on the streets :/

As far as I heard, hip is being scrapped in April and sure start is limited to your first baby

Vinteenage- please dont comment on our country's debt, you obviously have no idea how our society works, the benefits system is funded by the massive amounts of tax we have to pay in. It's the same as you complaining that we get 'free' healthcare- the money all comes from somewhere!
