Hello ladies. I went in yesterday to get the results of our 20 week scan and the doc told us that our baby boy has a cleft lip. Unknown how bad, if the palate is involved or what.. Kinda freaking out. They said the his left side is affected, but didnt get a clear picture of the right or palate. Ok so here is my question to you. What are the chances that they are wrong? For history we had one scan at 8 weeks, then this one at 20. The baby was sitting strange and was hard to get any clear pics. I have read that the doctor really can't say that there is a cleft issue for sure without a 3d or 4d ultrasound or at least another 2d scan with a very trained ultrasound tech. I have cried all that I can now and understand that this usually is an easy fix. I just wanted to know if anyone out there has gone through this or had a mistake in thinking there was something when not. I will post the 2 face shots that they gave us on here. My husband and I will be getting a 2nd docs look considering that ours wont order another scan for 8 weeks.. Thank you all for you time reading and advice!

Sorry to hear you are going through troubles. It must have been a terrible shock.

I'm sorry I don't have any specific advice as I haven't been through this myself but I didn't want to read and run.

I think you and your husband are doing the right thing - you are seeking further confirmation and medical advice.

The doubt and uncertainty must make it very difficult. Once you know for sure what you are facing you can then find out what your options are and then go from there.

I wish you and your beautiful baby all the best.

Im very sorry you are going through this hunnie- Unfortunately, I dont have any advice for you, but I wanted to offer you a hug!:hugs:

Thank you very much !!! I know that no matter what we will get through this and will and already love this baby soooo very much! I think I got all the crying out yesterday and now just going to work hard to learn as much as we can and get a plan of action in place! Thank you again for you kind words!!

I know people that have had it and had it fixed and you wouldnt know. the palate can make things diffcult to feed, but again relatively simple i believe to fix.

It may be wrong, perhaps its a good idea to get a 4d scan done to confirm.

No one wants to know there is something "wrong" with their baby, and no one wants their baby to have sugery (my son had sugery at 6 weeks), but at least you have some time to prepare.:hugs:

Hi hun sorry to hear this I don't know about how often they're wrong but I do know that a cleft is easily fixed after birth & will be virtually or totally unnoticeable after a procedure :hugs: xx

This must have come as a shock to you, I'm sorry,
But I don't think its a major long term problem. They are really good at fixing them up now so you'd hardly notice, it may cause some probs with feeding early on if the palate is affected but its not the end of the world - as in its very fixable!
I know its horrible to hear something is not perfect with your little one, can you ask for an extra scan so you can be sure if you even need to be that worried?

i had a huge crush on someone who had a repaired cleft lip, they were truly a heartbreaker! i know its difficult to hear that this has happened to ur baby but dont stress out about it.. if ur baby looks healthy otherwise then that is great! i am praying for u and ur beautiful baby

(((hugs))) everything will be fine hun, if that is the case, the docs can fix it easily... thinking of you and little one. x

Nothing is definate yet Hun, and it sounds like you are more prepared than you think.. Stay positive xxxx I watched a programme just the other day about it and they work absolute miracles.. Some of the children you would never know had had it... Your baby will be absolutely beautiful with wonderful loving parents, will be thinking of you xxxx

I don't have any advice but just wanted to send you some hugs :hugs:

I don't want to build your hopes up but I was watching a programme on discovery and they thought the baby had a cleft lip until they had the 4d scan and showed everything was ok..Maybe thats an option??? big hugs xxx

:hugs: Bless you it must've been a huge shock for you.

However, I must say they do absolutely amazing things these days and it will be a simple problem to fix - the good thing is knowing in advance to get things sorted.

For what it's worth, my sister was born with a cleft lip and palate 44 years ago and even that long ago, it was relatively simple to fix and she has an absolutely tiny scar now - and they are now so much better than they were then.

It might be good to get that second opinion though and research it all just so you feel happier about it.

Good luck I wish you all the very best xxx

So so sorry you are going through this hun but as the others have said the surgery they can do these days is fantastic! Sending you big hugs xxx

hiya

sorry to hear this. My brother had a cleft lip and palate. His lip was repaired and is invisible you would never know he had any problems. His palate was also repaired, in terms of problems he had to have a lot of dental work as his teeth were affected but again he had them fixed and had no problems. It also affected his hearing (only that he could not hear whispers) and he had an operation to fix that which worked and his hearing is perfect.

When he was a baby he was difficult to feed but you would never know that he'd had any issues at all and his was severe and yet you'd never know now.

hope this reassures you.

x

First let me thank you all!!! I really did need all the words of encouragement!!! I really think that I am ok right now with whatever, just would like to know what we are dealing with. I have to say that it does put some ease in my mind that there CAN be a thought that there is a cleft problem and then nothing comes from it other than a ton of worry! I haven't read much about that! One other piece to the story is at 12 weeks they called me at work and told me that I had CANCER cell show up and had to come in and get all these test and really scared me, then nothing came from it! I was and am fine! Just feel like maybe they are wrong this time too. I really can't see a big difference in my baby's face and others that have no question about cleft. I am going to have a second look but have to call insurance and see what they will cover and not. A 3d scan looks like it will be around $250 - $300 dollars and 4D is around $400. I would really like to know how bad it is if there really is an issue just so we know what we need to line up for after he is born. I again have to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you! I started on BNB when TTC and have found each and every one of you sooooo helpful and thoughtful!!

Hi I have a cleft and it's really no big deal ok granted I'd rather not have it but I've not been near a doctor/dentist since I was a teenager.

I'd be surprised if the sonographer told you about a cleft if they weren't sure. They don't look at the lip but at the gum line. A lot of the time they can't tell about a cleft palate until after birth as it's difficult to see on any type of scan.

However I would definitely get yourself a second opinion to make you feel better. A 3d scan will help you bond with baby and see how small a problem it is.

There's a few ladies on here with babies with clefts who will give you advice on feeding etc. Once you've ot your second opinion and processed it all in our head pop in the special needs bit of the forum.

Good luck with your beautiful baby x

Sorry to hear that you're going through this stress. I knew someone who's son was born with a cleft lip and now it's completely gone a year later. Wouldn't even notice. So don't worry. It should all be okay. Wishing you all the best...
