Coping with internal exams

so whats there to be bothered bout??

Its very uncomfortable, borderline painful for a lot of women. I have a tilted uterus (which is very common) and that can cause major discomfort during internal exams.

One thing that helped me a little was trying to push your tailbone into the table. It hurt so much the first time I raised my butt off the table and made it worse.

I am terrified of vaginal exams. I think it is called vaginusmus?

I had an exam with a speculum in the assessment unit on Sat night, can't stand them :( but found that using my breathing for contractions really helped.

Aha, I've got a tilted uterus too. I wonder if this is why it's so painful now? Saying that I was told that pregnancy will make it go back to how it should be. Who knows though lol, I'll ask at my U/S tomorrow

I have no idea how the contraction breathing goes :dohh: xx

these have never bothered me before, but ive had to have one weekly in the past three weeks and they have been pretty uncomfortable. i dont know if its because of all of the changes and pressure down there, but the first one caught me off guard and nearly brought tears to my eyes! so in the second and third i have just clinched my fists, stared up at the ceiling, counted the ceiling tiles really slowly and done the cleansing breaths i learned in the birthing class: a long, slow inhale in through the nose and then a controlled, slow exhale through the mouth. it seems to have helped a bit...i dont know if its any less uncomfortable, maybe its just that im making myself focus so hard on counting and breathing that i dont notice it as much. ;)

i had my first one today, so aweful :( I suppose you just have to lie back and take it for sake of bubs, but it doesnt help how uncomfortable they are...

I can't say I even think twice about them, we have one every month here from 4 months and every 2 weeks from 8 months. My Dr always lets me change and get up on the bed first before he comes in though, maybe just ask them to do that if it makes you more comfortable.

Although last time I forgot I was meant to do that and changed in front of him. No modesty me.

I honestly haven't found one uncomfortable, maybe we all just have different sensitivities!

The one in my hypnobirthing stuff is breathe in for 4 and out slowly for 6. I think it's really to get you to think about breathing and stop you doing that thing where you clench up and forget to breathe which makes everything more tense, less rleaxed and so sorer.

OASN: Do you know what the wee 12 year old Fy2 with her wee waspy, 'never had a baby waist' said to me when she was doing the exam? She obviously had not got a good view and had to go back in with the speculum, which was fine, but then she said 'just because you've had a couple of babies and the vaginal walls are a bit floppy!!!'

FLOPPY!!!

I felt like saying ' You know DR, it isn't considered good practice to tell patients that they have a floppy fanny, even if they do!!'

I just said 'nice.'

So much for my kegels.

lmfao!!!!

I've had a few internals done, Pretty uncomfortable i have to admitt. But it doesnt bother me too much. Its the fact that someone will stand behind the dr with this huge torch! Not even a small subtle torch, A great massive one as if they're examining some sort of cave!

The uterus changes position during pregnancy, but after both my previous pregnancies, my uterus went right back to being tilted.

don't worry, i'll be joining the floppy fanny club soon enough. :D

Lol @ Floppy fanny!

My aunty was saying she went for a smear and the nurse said "You can tell you've had all c-sections!"xx

I should have said, 'god no, it's because my husband has an ENORMOUS SCHLONG!!!' and seen what the reaction was.
