Could you (or do you) manage without a car?!

Neither I or my partner can drive.

We both work at a hotel where there is a staff bus that gets us there and back from our front door so for work were fine .. we also do our shopping at big tesco's in my town.

We manage fine without a car - but i do miss not being able to go out on day trips and stuff.

My goal for next year is to be driving by the end of it.

we must look like a right tribe when we go out and about lol me, OH, 2 kids and 3 dogs but it keeps us healthy and we always go out places and never miss out on anything.

i dont drive but my hubbie does and its not a problem coz i dont work or have to get any where on my own and if i do there are sooo many buses in edinburgh you dont realy need a car to get about

I live in a rural-ish place too and I manage. It can be hard but I like the fact its eco friendly. I think things will be harder in the future if we rely on cars to much. I dont hate cars lol but most journeys people make are under 5 miles- easily ridable or walk able x

I really wouldnt manage! No town is walking distance to me and to get to a bus stop id have to walk miles and then along a very busy main road. Sometimes its just really not possible :flower:

hmm.. see i might consider it if I had an OH, but 4 kids and a dog is a lot for one person to keep up with :haha: even when I take them all to the woods to walk the dog, where theres no traffic or anything.. i have a right kerfuffle keeping track of them all!

what happens when we run out or very low on oil? It will become really expensive. What will happen when that day comes and society is so reliant on it?

I know jobs etc rely on cars but considering most journeys made are under 5miles long it would be worth considering is it worth it?

I for one am grateful that I am fit and healthy enough to walk most distances. If something happened and I could no longer walk, I would regret not using my legs when I had the chance.

We're ALREADY reliant on it.
When we run out of oil the global economy is going to collapse. Think about how expensive it would be to ship things via covered wagons so shipping would become obsolete. Everyone would have to provide for themselves and we don't have the space for that (think cities) and there will be massive looting and hunger riots. Basic foods like milk, eggs and bread along with meat won't be accessible to anyone not on or near a farm (walking distance).
But, we're not running out of oil. Yes, we need to watch our consumption but we'll probably destroy the world in a nuclear war or biological warfare before we run out of oil.

We have a car but only OH drives. I could definately live without a car and do as OH uses his car for work. I like public transport and walking x

I've had to do without my car for the last week and a bit. Thought I would suffer but with maternity leave, I'm saving so much money staying indoors (although car is gonna knock a big hole in my finances as is in for repair) as I'm not going out shopping!

So the answer is yes! Didn't think I would be able to but it is possible. :haha:

We couldn't, especially as LO has appointments every other week at the hosp in the city. It would take 1.5 hours either way to travel by bus! Also the inlaws live 10 miles away but not on a bus route. However last year we did go down to one car. It was hard a first but we're ok with it now

i couldn't cope without one

well we are not getting more oil and we are using more than we have ever used before so we are running out in my eyes. It will not last forever.

I cope without one! I dont drive infact! Never learnt! OH drives and does have a car , but we only use it a few times in a month as he works all the time! I rely on public transport to get anywhere far away. But i walk everywhere and anywhere in my town.

Nope, and we have one each, itd feel like i was missing an arm or leg tbh!!

Nope. We live in the USA out in the country. Everything is at least 10 mins. away by car. There is no public transportation her either so without a car, we'd literally be screwed! :haha: We have two by the way.

We have a car, but I don't drive it. If my OH is working then I either walk or take city transit to where I need to go. Before I had Claire I really looked down my nose at public transportation. Somehow, the idea of going on a "bus" was beneath me. :nope:

Since having her and either stay at home like a shut in with my silly pride, or get out and go and DO things using the transit system helped me form a different opinion. I can't believe I thought so poorly of it before. :dohh: Its been a godsend these past few months!

Toyota are selling Aygo for £150 per month and £1,000 or more off your old car if you feel you need a car and its something you can afford. Road tax is only £20 a year and apparently they are good on fuel and are a low insurance group. The toyota is the same as the citroen C1 and peugeots 107

We did for a bit but even though insurance rates are ridiculous here, we caved. It's soooo hard to do groceries without it... and I live in a big city where stuff is really spread out, it's difficult to get into the suburbs without a car, bus routes don't link up well, etc.

I have had a car for 3 weeks and it broke tuesday night, and im dying without it already :(

I gave up my car 2 months ago and tbh it's not too bad. There are times when it's a total bugger, but usually it's ok.
