I have a dermoid cyst on my right ovary and i need an operation to remove it.Has anyone else had this and could tell me what the op is like and what to expect? x

Hi, I had a dermoid cyst on my left ovary 5 years ago, and also had an operation to have it removed. Mine was the size of a grapefruit, and they had to cut some of my left ovary away to remove it.
I was worried that this may cause me problems for getting pregnant in the future. But I have had 2 further babies since :0)
I was in hospital for 4 days in total (3nights). And the operation was fine, lasted about an hour. I had the bigger cut about 4 inches, because the dermoid was big, but you can just have the operation where its 3 small cuts.
I would compare the op to a c-section (but they don't actually cut into your womb......, its just that my scar is in the exact same place)

Hope this helps :flower:

Thanks very much. Do you mind if i ask a few questions? What kind of surgery was it? How did you feel afterwards? x

Ask as many questions as you like. :) I remember when i was told i had a dermoid cyst, i was so nervous as i'd never even heard of one before. I had the laparotomy which is the bigger op. But if the cysts not too big, they can do a laparoscopy. Do you know how big your cyst is or what op you need? After the op i stayed in hosp for 2 nights. I felt ok, just couldnt bend over or do anything that would cause pressure on my tummy. My son was 6 months old, so my husband and mum had to help me for a week or so. Also i couldnt drive for 4 weeks. The scar has pretty much gone now. I was also told my cyst contained teeth, skin and hair! Yuck i know x

To be honest they've not told me much, i only found out i had it as i was in severe pain and ended up at A&E, they scanned me and told me it was a dermoid cyst and i'd need an op to remove it. I'm still waiting on the appointment to come through to see the consultant to find out about the op and everything. I was in hospital in October and was told if i get the severe pains again then i've to go straight back to A&E and the op will get pushed up.

Hi Randomxx and Blosom - I just recently found out I have a Dermoid Cyst in my right ovary too. Approximately 4.5 cm in length.

Blossom - do you have pain/discomfort with your cyst? I can only imagine if it was the size of a grapefruit. yikes! Mine isn't severe pain all the time but I do have a cramped feeling once and awhile, and the muscles on my right abdomen always feel like they have a stich in them.

How soon after surgery is one well enough to try and conceive?
I'm getting another ultrasound in March and we'll decide from there if surgery is needed. I really don't want this to ruin my goal of TTC in June. *crosses fingers*

lu-is i cant give you much insight, but i was in agony with mine but they think it was twisting then stopped hence the severe pain going away, i still get cramps daily and its horrid. I've been waiting 2 months so far on my operation and still not heard anything from them. All i know is that its big enough to warrant getting surgery to remove it. x

I don't know much about dermoid cysts on ovaries. I just wanted to say good luck! My son had a dermoid cyst on his eyebrow and as soon as he had his op it looked fantastic afterwards. Good luck again :flower:

Did they tell you how big your dermoid cyst is?

I hadn't even thought about the waiting time to get in for surgery. dang.
I'm really hoping surgery won't be needed right away for mine 'cause I'd like to TTC this year, but then again with these annoying cramps I'm not having too much fun.

Yesterday I was feeling pretty good, but today they're frustrating. It's not severe pain, but fairly constant.

i think they said but to be honest i really can't remember as by the time they told me what it was i had been in hospital for 2 days and was shattered.

The cramps are very annoying but i've got used to them now its just when i get the severe ones that it really bothers me as i physically can't move with them.

You said you were going back for another scan didn't you? discuss it with them then and see what they suggest.

I hope you conceive soon hun. xxx

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I didn't actually have any bad pain with my cyst, they found it when they were scanning me 1 month after having my 1st child (the scan was to see if I had retained placenta). It was then a further 6 months before I had operation as they were waiting to see if it would start to shrink. Once I was told I had the cyst, I sometimes thought I could feel a burning sensation there.
I was told that I didn't have to have the op, but sometimes the cysts starts to twist a bit and that can be really painful.
I was told that I could start trying for another baby 6 months after op. This was because I had the bigger cut which was bascially like a c-section cut. I had the Operation in February, and then was pregnant again in the September :0).

Hope this all helps :flower:

Randomxx - Also I was going to say before, I was at hospital when they found out about the cyst, and like you I was told that I would have to be referred to the consultant. But it had to be my doctor that referred me, So I had to go see him and I got my gynae consultant appointment about 3 weeks after the orginal scan and doctors referral.

I had a dermoid cyst on my right ovary. They found it December 2007 and Januray 2008 they removed my whole right side. It was found as I had severe pain during sex. It was size of grapefruit and was wrapped around my tube.

ETA: I had keyhole surgery and have a scar inside belly button and three tiny ones on bikini line. I was in hospital overnight. Take it very slow and no bending over and try and organise to sleep downstairs so no climbing stairs!

My gynae told me to wait to try for 6 months...I then fell pregnant with my 1st!

HTH x

Thanks for the advice ladies.

Blossom i'm going to phone the hospital tomorrow and see what they say x

Yes, thank you for the advice!
I have my next Ultrasound scheduled for March 11, and an appointment with Gynecologist on March 9.

I'm thinking surgery will probably be their suggestion, especially as my right side has felt uncomfortable and crampy for a couple months now. It's facinaing how small the incision can be these days, hopefully if I go for surgery they'll use laroscopy.
I'm not looking forward to an additional 6 months of WTT :( but c'est la vie if that happens.

I'm glad there are some other ladies on here to talk about this with. Thanks again!

Any questions, just ask :0). You can PM me if you have any personal questions. I can remember when I was told I had this, I had no one to talk to as no-one had ever heard of it before (including me).

Random - I hope the hospital was able to help in getting you your appoinment

Turns out my consultation should have been on the 21st of December, but they sent the letter to an old address, even though my records should have been updated, so now my consultation is on the 1st of February x

How annoying! It's good that they were able to get you another one fairly quickly. Good Luck :flower:

Would you believe this, i never hear anything about Dermoid cysts then watching LA ink and low and behold Kat Von Dee has to go in for an op to remove to dermoid cysts. Though she kept referring to it as a cancer scare which has really freaked me out.

Question
Did having the cysts cause you to have irregular periods?? x
