For those with OH's that smoke..

A question.

Now I'm not anti smoker, I used to smoke before I got pregnant, but the moment I saw that positive test I stopped. My OH still smokes but NOT inside the flat.

I was reading stuff about third hand smoke and second hand smoke relating to SIDS.
I'm now I'm worried.

Baby is going to sleep next to me in a Moses basket at night, our flat gets hot easily too so I may possibly have to have the window open, which is closer to my OH and the opposite side of the room to baby.

But apparently your chances of SIDS with the father smoking are higher too?

Am I mean to say I don't want him to hold the baby for five / ten minutes after he's had a fag? And I will want him to wash his hands with soap..

Or am I just over reacting..
What are you girls doing who are in the same situation?

I think that this quote might create an outburst .... my mum smoked throughout all of her pregnancies in the car in the home the lot - and yes I like you am fine ..... but in those days you could also leave your back door open and go on holiday for 2 weeks ....... the point I am trying to make is that research is a wonderful thing - and my motto always says 'if in doubt do nout' xxxx

I disagree but everyone is entitled to it's opinion.I personally do not smoke because I was never interested in that.My hubby also doesn't smoke but my mom does and my kids grew up with her and they are also fine.I want my kids live out of baloon, because reasearchers also said this is so wrong not to let them touch anything, breath anything and so on..immunity is less developed and this is why kids get sick sooner and more often. So it's up to you how you choose your child to be-in the baloon or out. That is personal.

Oh hi, did you know that there is radiation in cigarrettes? This apparently is new to the public, but cigarrette companies have known about it for a long time.

Yes, RADIATION.

My husband smokes and we have a plan for it. He has a sweatshirt he will wear when he goes outside to smoke and will take it off when done and wash his hands no matter what he is about to do. It really isn't too much to ask I don't think and neither does he. Even if it has no effect on sids or not it is just the smart thing to do. The smell of smoke isn't good for anyone. Try not to worry too much.

I used to joke when i was a smoker that when I died i would be canonized by the catholic church as a saint due to all of the formaldehyde in cigarettes- I would never decompose. :haha: I don't smoke while preggo- and stay away from it- because my body isn't my own, I am sharing it with one of the most precious humans in the world to me and I just couldn't see it as a choice. I did find it difficult to not pick it back up though after i finished breastfeeding since DH never stopped.

My DH just recently quit smoking- thank goodness!!! You can't successfully MAKE a smoker quit, they need to be ready for it for it to last. He was a smoker for all my other pregnancies. He would wash his hands and always wore a coat outside, or would change his shirt when coming inside when the babies were small. (He stopped smoking indoors as soon as we got preggo with baby #1 and never resumed smoking indoors afterwards).

My parents had 7 kids, and my dad was a heavy smoker. He would smoke in the car even with the windows rolled up and us in the car. My sisters did develop problems linked to second hand smoke- and as a kid I always hated being in close contact with the smoke because it always gave me headaches...My mom and a couple of my sisters would lose their voice after long exposure to it..

I've had talks with my DH about the long term effects of smoking, which he is aware of- but I have discussed with him some of my personal concerns- having to care for him when it makes him ill, and how sad his kids will be when his body begins to deteriorate from it (the process has already begun, he has COPD from smoking). So...I think with our common-sense talks and me pointing out the reality that it already HAS started to affect his health, he started to see it as a choice he was making and decided he was done.

The smoking thing is really, really tough though. I worried about the SIDS thing *every* single time because of the third hand smoke. I DO believe we can drive ourselves crazy worrying about absolutely anything, and there hasn't been a confirmed link between the two....
In the event that my DH ends up resuming to smoke- then I will be making him wear different clothes outside and wash his hands and all of that before handling the baby- I know the smell bothers me, so I assume it would irritate a newborn as well. Nothing pleasant about nuzzling your little face in a shirt that smells like an ashtray. LOL
