Hi Dani my baby was small at birth but not prem she weighed 5lb4oz she is on ebm and top ups as her blood sugar was low at birth ....she will be coming off it at her 6 wk check if the doctor is happy with her x

My son is on nutriprem 2 now 4months old been on it since birth (was topped up with it while I bf for the 1st 3 days) he was 4lb 8oz at birth 39 +5 weeks. He is on the 0.4th centile, now 10lb 15oz so putting weight on slowly, but he is really active. Had problems with teats though as the milk he so thick might had to change yet again cos taking up to an hour to drink bottles started with Tommy tippee (Slow, medium then varie flow) then NUK Medium flow teats, tried large hole teats but way too fast. Any ideas which bottle and teat is best???

Hello,

My daughter Chloe was born 7 weeks early (32+5) and was only 2lb 8oz, we had issues with her trying to latch on so I expressed exclusively for the month that she was in special care, and when she was sent home we were giving Nutriprem 2 (smells horrible doesnt it!) and we did start giving her every other bottle EBM and then the other ones Nutriprem. But she wasnt gaining weight so well so we were advised to give her more Nutriprem (expressing is hard work and I have low milk supply so it wasnt a problem for us).

She also has gastric reflux so is on infant gaviscon to thicken her feeds. She is just over 10 weeks, 3 corrected, and is 5lb 6 oz now. Am hoping that she'll start filling out a bit more now, oh and she was born on the 0.4th percentile and has been following just under it ever since (she never lost any weight after birth, probably sue to her not having much fat to spare!). Small but perfectly formed.

If you have a questions just give me a shout :)

Hi

Congratulations on the birth of Jaylee.

My little girl Poppy is 13 weeks old (9 weeks corrected) she was 4 weeks early and weighed only 3lbs 7 oz. She is on Nutriprem 2 and has been on it since she was about 6 days old. Originally she was on normal formula and any expressed milk I had, but when she was 6 days old SCBU said she should have been on Nutriprem 2. She was on only Nutriprem 2 for about 3 weeks, then they said she could start having one bottle a day of EBM (I had carried on expressing and had lots frozen) then 3 weeks later they increased her EBM to 2 a day and 4 bottles of Nutriprem 2 which she is still on now.

I am still expressing, although only twice a day (it's hard work looking after Poppy full time and expressing), I am only getting about 60mls for the whole day :( and have about a months supply left in the freezer so soon it will go down to only half a bottle or nothing at all! I find that if there are days that I have not given her EBM (naughty mummy forgetting to take it out the freezer) then she ends up really uncomfortable with constipation so I am going to try and express for aslong as possible even if it is just a small amount.

She now weighs a chunky 7lbs 3oz :) although she is still below the 0.4th centile. She is following her own little growth line according to the neo natal specialist who we see every few months. Her weight gain really slowed down before Christmas so she is being weighed weekly and we have SCBU nurse coming out in a few weeks just to check her progress.

Do you get given the ready made cartons as well as the powder? As know some doctors are really reluctant to give it out as it is expensive. Luckily we are given 16 cartons each time we get 4 powders.

Hope Jaylee is piling the weight on :)

Doctors won't give me liquid cartons only now manged to get 4 cartons of powder now they were only giving me 2 at a time. Since leaving the hospital when lo was 1week, a Nicu nurse came twice in the first 2 weeks haven't seen anyone since. Doctors surprised about it and has made an appointment to see a consulant at the hospital cos he is now just on the 0.4th centile line but meeting all the development stages think he just going to be small

Expressing and looking after our LO's is hard, so dont feel guilty Willow (I give myself a hard time about it too), and I am now only getting about 60mls a day whereas I used to get 60mls or more each sessions, 6 or so times a day!

The neonatal nurse came out to see us twice a week for the first few weeks she was out and then once a week, but when Chloe had a slow weight gaining week, only 20g in a week, she then came out again twice a week, as its been xmas and new year and all the snow etc, its been nearly two weeks that's we've seen her, but we went back to the hospital for Chloe's follow up on wednesday. The consultant is a little concern about her weight gain, so we have another appointment in a months time to review it, but the neonatal nurse will still be coming out to us once a week. Definately mention the not seeing the nurse situation, as I've found it brilliant seeing ours, asking sometimes silly questions, but she always has an answer, whereas our HV (who I have only met once) seemed a bit reluctant to give answers to some questions I had, maybe due to her not being sure with regards to a preemie or just being naff!!

The worst thing I hate about Nutriprem 2, other then the smell, is having to give it a good shake to mix it up properly, it always gets so frothy, makes it hard to see how much of the bottle she's had etc.

Oh and about the cartons, when we had Chloe's jabs done just before xmas, I mention that could we have some to help out over the xmas period with traveling etc etc, and the Dr said sure and prescribed us 6 cartons. Am hoping when we go next time we can get some more as they are a god send when out and about. Even if I had to buy them at cost or something I would!.

I think I will ask about the liquid cartons of nurtriprem when I go next to the doctors got to pick up another 2 cartons of powder cos mine didn't get ordered they had to give me two of someone elses.

The milk is not nice lol and the froth is a nightmare I can never see how much is left esp when I was using the tommy tippee bottles with the clear writing (who ever thought of that idea!!!!)

I get Mckenzie weighed everyweek it varies how much weight he puts on a few weeks ago he lost weight then didn't put anything on then a few onzes a week. But he did put 9oz on in 2 weeks this time considering he was ill and on antibiotics for a week bless him

Hi Ladies,

I hope your little ones are all doing well.

It is nice to chat to people with tiny ones, as Poppy was only 4 weeks early people don't really class her as a premmie, but as she was only 3lbs 7oz she is not the same as full term babies so don't really feel like I fit in iykwim.

It's awful that your doctors are not giving you the cartons, I think we are really lucky to get 16 at each prescription renewal. The hospital requested 4 powders and 16 cartons when Poppy was sent home from SCBU and since then they just renew the same each time. TBH we have only used a few so far as trying to save as many as possible for when we visit people, we have been so paranoid of her catching anything we have limited who has visited us and only taken her to OH's grandparents, now she is heavier feel more confident though so sure those cartons will soon go!

Mummy Mi - sorry to hear that you are only getting 60mls also - it sucks doesn't it!? I am going to see if I can up it to 3 times a day and see if that helps. My aim was 3 months so anything now is a bonus for me and just take each day as it comes. What pump do you have btw?

Poppy has been weighed at least once a week since she came home, but now my HV and clinic have said to get her weighed once a month :( this really doesn't sound right to me as she is still below the 0.4th centile and also her recent weight gain issues. TBH my HV knows nothing about tiny babies at all which I have found soooo frustrating. She told me Poppy should not have tummy time until she was 12 weeks old because she was so small, when I took her to neonatal specialist at 2 months he was asking me how tummy time was going and that there no reason why she shouldn't be having it.... I am seeing SCBU nurse in few weeks so will ask about weighing then, for now think I will put her on the wii fit lol!

we used nutriprem for alex, we use the dr brown bottles with no 2 teats or the mam bottles

Hi Ladies,
Mummy Mi - sorry to hear that you are only getting 60mls also - it sucks doesn't it!? I am going to see if I can up it to 3 times a day and see if that helps. My aim was 3 months so anything now is a bonus for me and just take each day as it comes. What pump do you have btw?

Well before I had Chloe we got a Tommee Tippee manual pump for £10 in Asda, the idea was to bf and to express so that other half could do some night feeds so I didnt see the point in buying an electric one. In hospital I used the amazing Medela Symphony (which is only in hospitals) and I could double pump and it was great, I used that whilst I was recovering (took a week to get discharged cus I had 3 horrible drains in) then I used to express using the machine whenever I visited Chloe in SCBU and was using the manual one at home. Well after 3 weeks, I had such a pain in my wrist from the repeated trigger action, I was in agony. We we went out and got the Medela Swing, it was £90, and tbh I which it was able to double pump but it does do the job, even if I do have to turn up the TV a bit when using it.

I was expressing 6-8 times a day, once during the night but now she's home it's becoming less and less due to being so busy! We were advised to give her more formula as well to help with weight gaining (hasnt really helped yet but still). I'm pretty sure my supply isnt going to last that much longer, but I'll keep going and trying till it gives out!

About bottles, we used the Medela ones at first as we got them with the pump, she's fine on those, is on medium. We tried her on Tommee Tippee size 2 bottles and teats and she was fine for about a week then just refused to take anything from them, tried a Medela one and she was fine. We also tried Dr Brown's but it didn't help with her 'angry feeding' (crying, coughing etc) and we've just bought some Mam ones, which she seems okay with but I need to get some medium teats as its taking forever to finish a bottle!.

She was going 4-5 hours between feeds but for some reason this last week shes only going 3-3.30 hours even tho she is taking more at a feed (used to take 50-60ml and now taking 70-80ml) I cant understand it, I can only assume its a growth spurt but it's knackering!!

Hope everyone's doing okay in the snow!

Damn, wrote long post and then lost it!

Andrew is 21 weeks (12wks corrected) and has been almost exclusively EBM-fed. I had supply problems shortly after he was discharged, and the NICU Outreach Midwives brought me some of the pre-made bottled NutriPrem2, he had one a day and his weight gain increased dramatically. But I was keen for him to be on breastmilk and so was prescribed Domperidon to increase my supply, which has worked.

Andrew was given a prescription for NP2 in tetrapacks but our local pharmacies couldn't get any (wholesaler difficulties) so they gave me a tub of the powder instead. Luckily - from my perspective - I haven't had to open it yet. It sits on the kitchen cupboard in case of emergency (but I now have 1.5l of EBM frozen too).

Andrew's paediatrician isn't happy with his latest growth rates on EBM and asked us to increase his feed amount, which is difficult as he doesn't want to drink more (his stomach can only take so much). I'm hoping she doesn't suggest that we start giving him NP2 instead just to improve his weight gain.

BTW - if anybody wants to know how to turn their Medela Swing into a double pump, drop me a PM! You need to have a couple of spare pipes, take a trip to Halfords, and not need the pump at high suction for a single boob ... but it works!

Hello and brilliant job on the expressing, your doing fab!

When Chloe was in hospital and was exclusively on EBM, we have sachets od fortifier to mix in with the EBM which was to boost her growth and help her put on weight, but when she was discharged they put her on the nutriprem powder. Maybe you could get prescribed the fortifier as that was what there were doing to do for us but then they changed their minds and said nutriprem was better for her.

She only put on 4oz this week and 20g the week before. Our special care nurse said she will talk with the consultant again and there's a possibility Chloe will go on some high energy forumla to help with weight gain. It's odd because this last 2 weeks Chloe has been eating like a horse yet she's not really putting on much weight. I'm sure it'll sort itself out.

I do wish I had had the support you had and been prescribed Domperidon but tbh the special care nurse was telling me forumla was better for her as shes prem and that expressing is hard work and I should be focusing my time on Chloe. So that's kind of why I dropped from 6-8 times a day to maybe twice a day now. It will almost be dried up soon but I just cant seem to find the time or motivation to pick it up again. I hate to think what her weight gain (if any) would be on EBM only!

Hugs to all x

Ah - the fortifier. You can't get it! It turns out that it's only available within the Units, you cannot get it on prescription or anything. When Andrew was discharged, the paediatrician asked for him to be given fortifier, and they had to send me home with two boxes - and then the Outreach Midwives had to bring me more. Now I'm officially off their books, the fortifier has stopped.

I can understand that sentiment that expressing involves a lot of time and commitment that you should be spending on your LO. I think I'm lucky in having DH at home (although not lucky that he's out of work!), so he does the bottle feed of EBM whilst I pump.

Hi Ladies,

I too have the medela swing :) I started with the medela mini electric but couldn't cope with having subtitles on the telly all the time lol. The only thing that frustrates me is the tube always seems to get condensation or water inside, have ordered couple more online now so can rotate them. Marleys girl I would def be interested in your Halfords plan :)

I wasn't given any option about the Nutriprem 2, the first I new about her having it and not having my EBM was when I went to feed her in SCBU and got the milk out the fridge and all my EBM had been frozen....When I asked them about it they said to carry on pumping and freezing it and 'hopefully' she would be able to have it in the future! Then gradually it was increased to 2 bottles a day and thats the maximum they have said she should have.

MummyMi - hope your lo puts on some good weight soon, it is so worrying when they don't and confusing when they are eating more than normal but putting on little weight.

Marleygirl - fingers crossed you can carry on giving your lo 100% EBM. I wonder about these professionals sometimes when they tell you your lo needs to take more, when we are feeding them as much as they will take.....Fun to see them try to force feed Poppy, my HV told me Poppy was still hungry on one of her visits, I told her she wasn't but she kept going on at me how important it was that Poppy got enough milk and how she needed to put the weight on, so I said ok you feed her... haha mummy knows best, even after ages of trying Poppy did not take a drop!

Just wondered how old are your lo's, weight when born, how much do they weigh now and what centile are they on?

Poppy is 14 weeks (10 weeks corrected)
Born 3lbs 7oz
Now 7lbs 3oz
Below the 0.4th centile

Andrew is now 21 weeks, 10 weeks corrected.
Born 1lb 6oz (IUGR)
Now 7lb (being weighed tomorrow, so I may update this!)
Below the 0.4th centile, below the 4thSD on the premmie chart too!

Yes, I had to laugh when the paediatrician said to feed Andrew more - sometimes he'll take 120ml, but most of the time it's hard work to get the full 100ml down him. And he's started sleeping through, so he skips one feed as a result - I try to make it up during the day but not always successful. So instead, to get calories into him, we've started early weaning him - puree & baby rice - which he does take in addition to the milk.

I'll PM you the Swing idea!

Chloe is now 10 weeks, 3 weeks corrected.
Born 2lb 8oz
Now 5lb 10oz
Below the 0.4th centile

I didnt know there was a preemie chart? Where did you find it?

Marleysgirl - and you are lucky (in a way) having DH at home to ease up the time you spend pumping. I thought the fortifer could be prescribed, that's what the dietician at the hospital said to us before Chloe was discharged but then we ended on Nutriprem so maybe she was wrong - or the NHS is saving money somewhere along the line!

Willow - thanks, I hope she puts on some more weight too, still waiting to here whether she'll have to go on the high energy forumla or not.

She has SO many clothes that people have got her and she cant fit into any of them! I literally have bags full of clothes in weight ranges just waiting for her to grow into! One day I guess!

Oh and I wondered, as there isnt a pumping and EBM bottle feeding section, how to you both fit it all in.

I used to pump after I fed Chloe snd she was asleep but somewhere along the line, (possibly due to other half going back to work so there's more things I have to do) I got out of synch and skipped some as I found I was always hungry from missing breaskfast/lunch etc. I used to always pump once during the night and other half would do that feed but now hes back at work, and he's a heavy sleeper and usually sleeps through Chloe crying, I feed her then just crawl back into bed!

So what are your usualy routines, I would like to increase my pumping but keep seeming to forget or something else crops up, speaking of which I'm going to go pump now before I forget!!

They're not strictly preemie charts - they're "low birth weight" charts from the World Health Org. Links to the girl & boy charts are down this page, I find it easier to track Andrew's growth on these even if the hospital doesn't use them. I had to ask a friend to print them out on an A3 printer!

I was told that fortifier couldn't be prescribed? Weird.

Bags of clothes? I have boxes! Andrew is currently in Asda Tiny Baby (6lb) stuff, and his old preemie (5lb) stuff is now boxed away, I can't bear to part with it. His next set (early 7.5lb) is under the cot, dungarees are now being used from these. The newborn stuff (9lb) is in the same box, at the bottom. The 0-3m & 3-6m stuff is in a large storage box across the nursery! Never mind, he'll grow into them all eventually.

Oh and I wondered, as there isnt a pumping and EBM bottle feeding section, how to you both fit it all in.

Pumping seems to be discussed in the BF forum, but then I have to read the FF forum to find out about bottle-feeding!

I pretty much pump when Andrew is feeding (if OH is feeding), or I do it afterwards if not, with Andrew in his bouncy chair at that time. Our routine is:

7am - awake, I change & feed him, I pump, then have my breakfast! Andrew tends to go back to sleep. Jeremy Kyle on as OH still in bed ;)
11am - OH feeds while I pump (Judge Judy on!)
Lunch, then go out and do any shopping in this gap!
3pm - OH feeds while I pump; then Andrew has some puree & rice
7pm - OH feeds while I pump (The Simpsons on!)
Andrew is put up to bed after this, then we cook & eat our dinner
11pm - I pump, then crash out in bed; OH stays up as he's a night owl
11pm-2am - If Andrew wakes, OH will feed him while I sleep
3am - I get up and pump, wake Andrew to feed if he hasn't woken by now

Reading that through, I think I'm lucky with OH. Yes we don't synchronise our sleep patterns well (we overlap for 4 hrs), but it works - he does a late night feed and is still up when I pump overnight, so I get a cup of tea made! Then he sleeps while I do the early morning feed etc.
