Hip Babies / Hip Dysplasia

Thanks ladies! So pleased to have found you.

My friends and family have also started to buy little toys and gifts for Sophie so that she has some new things to distract her if she is unsettled.

Cast removal day and I think we found a chickenpox this morning. AHAHAHAHAHHHHHHH!!!! I'm going to try to get her in to get the cast off anyway.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO oh that just isnt even funny, fxd that they remove the cast xxx

The carseat was and is the biggest problem for us as it is HUGE and we are having to sell our car a Bora to get another one so that there is more room in it, as we have been told Ellie will prob be in cast for 6 month then a brace for 3 month so we will have to use the carseat for that time.

I had a Bora while Bryony was in her car seat, and it fitted fine. Fiddly to put in, but once its in it was solid!.

Well the cast is OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So so happy about that!!

Ellie screamed through the removal, and pretty much any time she was out of our arms in the hospital. We were straight in to the plaster room, then on to xray, and then into a consultant, not one we'd met before. She was great though, looked at the angles on her hips and said that her bad hip looked like it was 21. No one had talked angles with us before, but apparently her hip was 39 (I'm not positive I remember that right) and 20 is considered 'good'. Her good hip is 8, so we've got no worries on that side. We're in the brace now for a few months (if she'll tolerate it, but she didn't seem too worried if she doesn't) and then back in October for another check and probably an arthogram to get a better view. It's so close, the news was so much better than I was expecting. It's been a bad week (a friend died of cancer, the funeral is tomorrow) and this is great news.

As for her chicken pock, it's still in the singular. DH apparently only got one pock, so maybe we'll be lucky? I'm not counting on it though, I've already said at work I'll probably have to take monday off.

That is great news:happydance: - im assuming you can take off the brace so she can have a bath??

I saw your post this morning and i was like NO that is so unfair and i have been worrying for most of the day that they wouldnt allow you into the hosp cause of the chicken pox and you would be stuck with the cast for longer! im so so happy for you that it is off - now that her hip is looking better will she still need the other surgery thing? (cant remember the name)

so sorry to hear about your friend:hugs:

Honestly, we didn't mention the pock... there was only 1, and I wasn't willing to let that stand in our way.

The consultant said that she wouldn't definitely put her down for the osteotomy, and that it is close at the moment. Up until now everyone has said most likely, this is the first we've heard maybe not. So not counting chickens yet, but a bit hopeful.

We did take off the brace for her first bath, and she got pretty upset. But when we took her clothes and brace off she got really excited about being able to move her legs. She kept kicking out her left leg (the right one is the bad one)

I should mention it felt so strange to hold her without the cast. She can't sit on her own and is very weak. I felt more comfortable when they put her in the brace!

I wouldnt have mentioned it either :haha: Thats good news about the osteotomy at least it isnt a 'she definately needs it'

Yeah i remember when lucy came out of the harness it took her quite a while to get used to baths! and the memories are coming back of not knowing how to hold lucy as she was so soft!! :dohh:

Its weird to think that we have to get used to them being 'normal'

we stl have Ellie facing backwards and both mine and my partners legs are longs so it just doesnt fit its fine when it faces forward but she cant go that way yet xx

ah that would be why mine was ok claire, i'm a shorty! lol.

Thought I'd do a little post cast update. Ellie's right hip is still really stiff, but she's starting move that knee more. Yesterday we went for a walk and she spent about 1/2 the time with both legs sticking straight out both sides of her buggy :) I didn't realise quite how stiff she'd be coming out of the cast, or how long it's going to take to get her muscles moving again. But you can see her back strengthening every day. Yesterday I did a bit of brace free time after every nappy change (because an hour is just too much time for her at the moment, she gets sore) and yesterday afternoon she was 'sitting' on my arm while I carried her for the first time. She also sat for a second or two on her own, and (this is the part that's much better than when they first learn to sit) supporting and catching herself with her hands when sitting without the brace. So we're making progress.

The chicken pox are no fun, let me tell you. Sunday night I was up a LOT with her, only got about 3 1/2 hours sleep myself. We got some zirtek yesterday and that meant a lot better sleep last night (and DH took the monitor into the other room and I slept a solid 5 hours, 7 total, bliss!) And a baking soda bath... she hates the bath still but I think part of the problem last night is she was just. so. tired. She pushed away her bottle after 2oz and pointed to her bedroom. Poor mite.

are you not getting physio for Ellie my Ellie will be getting physio and hydrotherapy once a week for 12 weeks when the cast comes off, im so chuft for you that its off now xx

It is great to have the cast off alright. She managed a bit of a smile in her bath last night (although screamed going in) so we're making progress I hope! No mention of physio at all from the hospital, but I'm bringing her to a private physio Friday to get some advice. We'll do what when can then at home. We're going to try to find a warm pool to bring her to as well, once we're back from holiday.

really I cant believe that your not getting offered phyio I would ask about itx
