I assumed he'd be a first and last.. now I'm not so sure. If we did go for another it'd have to be pretty soon. How will my body cope?
Any opinions out there?
I've never thought being an only child is that good for anybody. Just in the sense of the sharing thing, the fact that the world and parents don't revolve around this one person, like they might think they do.
I had a very easy pregnancy so I guess it's given me an idea that if the last wasn't so bad neither would the second be.
Do I need to take time out and view the situation?

I was told you should wait at least long enough that the 2 babies will be at least 18 months apart, just so you're giving your body enough time to heal in between. (9mths). But, many many women do have another right away, thats why there's 'irish twins'. Also keep in mind, every pg is different, one might be easy, the next hard. Hey, the next one can be even easier!!

I personally think kids should grow up with siblings. Im on my 6th :p But having an only child is fine too, it's all how you feel. I know my friend, she only has one, and he's older now. She wishes he had a sibling, and so does he. Another friend has one child also, he wishes he had a brother, but my friend doesnt lol. Its all what's better for your family. hth...xxx

6th?! Wowzers !
I think also what the thing is, is that I'm really really enjoying having a baby around. Obviously he'll grow up! but I've taken to it like a duck to water, so too has my OH. My LO has been very good so far...
I'm a bit surprised really at how it's going, early days I know, but now that i've caught a glimpse of what it's all about I think I kinda want to go again.
Yes I tend to agree with you on the 18 months inbetween but can I afford to wait till then, I'll be 41, my HO will be 47.. It's only a figure but still..

As far as how will your body cope, that may be a good question to has your OB or MW. Happymamma is a fertile myrtle, so she's probably as good as pregnancy nurse/doc to ask. :haha:

I honestly would take at least a couple months to further heal from your delivery and think about what you want. What does your OH think about having another right away? How will you mentally cope? What's your work situation? How's your home life? Will it be too much stress on you and your family to care for a newborn when you already have an infant that still needs your attention 24/7? Those were the things I asked myself. My DH and I decided that one was enough then and as time went on and DD grew up a bit, that's when we decided to expand our family. The age thing wasn't looming over my head until recently, so I understand how you may feel that it's now or never. I have this feeling that I will want a third after this...something I would have NEVER thought while pregnant with my DD!!!

Good luck with whatever decision you make. :)

You better have another before he turns 2, you just might change your mind :haha: I'm kidding of course, wait till 8 yrs old, thats the worst!! Haha, no, it's just mine Im sure  She's my problem child :nope: But, all worth it! Kids are great, I'd have 10 if they didnt keep asking me to buy them stuff!! I also refuse to drive a bus as my family vehicle. Heck, I said that about a minivan, and I ended up with 2 so far :dohh:

Lol, aw, shucks  now if only I can get paid like a pg nurse/dr...

Its true about the age though, I felt pressure to hurry up and have kids when I was 25!! Only cuz I knew I wanted alot, and couldnt find a man who also wanted more then 2 :D

Hi! I'm also 39 and have an eleven and a half month old daughter. I am currently 9 weeks pregant with (fingers crossed) number two. I had an emergency ceasarian with our first and ideally we would have had a longer gap but like you we didn't want an only child and time isn't on our side. I've yet to see a midwife (that's a whole other story though) but the nurse who took my bloods didn't see any issue with the gap and advised that even after a ceasarian your body should be healed and able to cope within 6 months.
Apparently iron levels can be a problem with a really short gap. The main issue according to friends who've had two very close together is just sheer exhaustion running around after two LOs but they are adamant it's well worth it

6 months to heal?? That's even better! I was told ideally, 9 months before ttc, but dr's are always overly cautious ;) My c-sec took me a whole year to heal from, but it was a nightmare,... a resident dr cut me open, it was her very 1st surgery and dh said she was shaking like mad. I wish he would have said something!!! I would have insisted that my dr do the surgery.

Hey, drs even say to wait 3 months to ttc after a mc, I have 2 kids that were conceived within the 1st month after a mc.

As for iron levels, thats what suppliments are for, so I wouldnt worry about that. I had to take them during my last pg :)

I find it hard running after a 2 yr old and having a new born! They run fast!! LOL Its all good though...

I say if you want another baby, do it when you feel comfortable.

I'm 42 and nearly 28 weeks pregnant with number 2, my son Logan is currently a year old. There will be 15 months between them when my baby girl is born. My GP was fine with me TTC 3 months after Logan was born as I'm not getting any younger! I did conceive 4 months after Logan was born but had a miscarriage in January, then conceived again in March with my current pregnancy. Things are much the same as my pregnancy with Logan, gestational diabetes as I had with him but otherwise straightforward.
