How long after your BFP did you wait before you went to your GP's???

I got my BFP on Monday and was thinking of waiting till after christmas is over before going to docs. Mainly on the understanding that they wont do anything or book me in till a few weeks down the line anyway.

What are your opinions/experiences of this? Also, dont want to go booking up appointment for the sake of it when everything is ok so far anyway.

Also whats the procedure for first GP appointment? what info do they take?
I was thinking as well about future appointments as my BF will be most unlikley to be able to get to attend the appointment with me, are there any important appointments he should attend with me??

You can go ahead and call your doc and let them know you got your BFP. Usually they will schedule you for an appointment at 9/10 weeks which is when they are able to spot the heartbeat of your lil one on an ultrasound.

They may schedule you before then even but mostly to collect information on family health and perhaps ask you to do some blood tests and urine tests.

I was around 8 weeks when I booked my first appointment but I wasen't seen until 10 almost 11 weeks. They mostly ask questions at the first appointment and send you for blood work. They did my internal check at my 2nd appointment but your internal depends on your doctor, I heard some girls didn't even get one. You might want to get some info from your bf because they will ask about his medical history and family medical history. Maybe its best if you asked him to join you. Hope that helps :hugs:

I guess it depends on how your doctor's office works. I called the day I got my BFP, figuring that it usually takes several weeks to be booked for an appointment anyway...but they wanted me to come in initially for a "confirmation of pregnancy appointment" where they confirmed for themselves that I was pregnant. Then, the nurse spent several minutes with us (DH came with me) talking about what to expect, how to take care of you and the baby, and answered any questions I had. Before I left, they booked me for my 8 week scan (which will happen next week!!!). It was nice to hear the nurse say "You are definitely pregnant" and get some of my questions answered.

I didn't see my GP at all. I called the surgery and told the receptionist that I had just got a BFP and what did I need to do. She booked me in with the mw to take all my details, and she booked the 13 week scan at the hospital. She told me there was no need to see the GP.

Miss Gaby, I just realised we are the same gestation in pregnancy!!!!
I am probably going to do what Amanda did and just ring up and tell the receptionist I got a BFP and see what their protocol is.

yay Shumie :) i shall be following you around here a lot most likely lol

i was already thinking of just calling up and seeing what they say myself too, thats really why i asked lol Dont want to go waiting on docs appointment if i dont need to see her in the first place. Takes about 2 weeks to get an appointment here anyway which would land us right in the middle of christmas. I was actually just gonna wait till after christmas and new year are out the way first.

Miss Gaby, hav you experienced any spotting at all? I have noticed a few spots of blood this evening.

I never experienced spotting with my other pregnancies- but they do say that every pregnancy is different!

I went right away! The very enxt day.
I wanted a blood test just to be 110% sure! And also he/she can prescribe you vitamins or folic acid (which for me makes them much cheaper! The prenatal vits I was given are €30 for 3 months - a prescription is cheaper!)

I would go right away - strike while the iron is hot?!

In my first appointment he checked the dates then sent me for blood tests for STDs, to check mny blood group, and to check my immunity to toxoplasmosis (spelling?!) and rubella. He also took my weight and blood pressure and gave me a predicted due date.

I saw my MW at five weeks, i called the surgery and they said its best to get the ball rolling.

I thought I'd list what appointments I've had so far to give you an idea of what to expect, however it is different depending on where you are, I'm in London.

1 - I went to my GP the day after my bfp, but there was no need for me to go and if I got pregnant again, I wouldn't rush to go really.. But maybe just give them a call and see what they advise (like you said) :)

The doc just said well done dear and sent me to book an ante-natal appointment for when I was about 8 weeks. lol

2 - When I had that appointment she just went through a few basic's and sent me to the hospital to have the first lot of blood tests.

3 - The next time I saw anyone was my midwife when I was 12 weeks, she goes through alot with you and thats the first main appointment I'd say. I also heard the heart beat at this appointment, first time it all felt real for me !!

4 - Then I had my 12 week scan.

5 - Had to book to see GP at 16 weeks, at this app I listened to heartbeat and had a general check up.

And now my next appointment is my 20 week scan or mid pregnancy scan as they say which is in about 3 weeks, I would have gone past 20 weeks by then!!

So I haven't had many appointments really, 5 so far.. My OH has come to all of the appointments, but he didn't really NEED to be there, so dont worry to much if he cant make it..

I made an appointment with my GP and saw her within a week, only because I was on medication so I needed to check it out, so I must have been about 5wks.........but I also got a lot of information, and refered to the hospital I wanted and had my blood pressure done etc etc.....so it wasn't a waste of time. I still had to wait til I was 10 weeks for my booking in appointment, but at least it was official.

If I was to get PG now, I would probably wait a few weeks before I went and saw her, only because it is all fresh in my mind and I wouldn't be worrying so much. x

Saw GP straight away but thats because I am half way through tests to diagnose PCOS and I've been taking lots of meducation for restless leg syndrome. She didnt do another test or bloods or anything just said congratulations, stopped my meds immediately and booked a MW apt for next week, which will mean Ive been waiting 4 weeks :hissy:

I think I got my positive pregnancy test on August 8th, and I saw my dr. on Aug 14th. She did many blood tests and confirmed my pregnancy with HCG.

I have my first appt on dec 27. i will be like 6 weeks along.
