With my first, my husband was literally JUST starting his job and could take no time off. Luckily LO was born on her due date, which was his last day at his internship job, and he wasn't set to start until the following Tuesday so we had ~4 days together. My parents visited me during the day and helped with things like meals and light housework for the first week or so. The company I work for was so small that I did not even qualify for FMLA - but luckily I was able to negotiate a decent leave plan for myself (6 weeks paid, 12 more weeks parttime paid hourly, maintaining full benefits).
With #2, hubby had no paternity leave policy, but had worked there long enough to save up sick time/vacation time and took a few days. I think it was actually just 2 days off - we had previously planned on spending most of November with his family, and he needed to save up his time for that trip. I flew 1200 miles with a 2 yr old and a newborn by myself to spend 3 weeks with my in-laws (I love them to death and am very close), because he could only spend 9 days! It worked out ok. By that time, my company actually had a maternity leave policy - that of course was not as great as the one I had negotiated for myself
But I did get short-term disability, which capped at $500/week before taxes were taken out, for 5 weeks. Yay. I managed to take just about 12 weeks off, mainly paid.
This time around, hubby works for a different company and gets 2 weeks paid paternity leave! We are so excited! Especially since we have the two girls now, and the 4 yr old needs to go to school, AND because the rest of my family is no longer a reliable support system. We really can't count on any outside help at all. I plan on being off work until December, and then working 2 weeks parttime before taking the rest of my vacation time over the holidays, for a total of about 12 weeks.
