I had an HSG back in March 2014 as part of my fertility assessment. They used local anesthetic for my cervix, which was nice, but I still felt period-like cramping as the doctor inserted the catheter. It was nothing too bad though and only lasted a few seconds. I felt nothing as the liquid passed through. Both tubes were open, and I've heard if one has blockages it can hurt like hell. Luckily not my experience.
They did have me take 2 ibuprofen an hour before the procedure, and I did take antibiotics on the day before, day of, and for 2 days after the procedure just as a precaution. There was some bleeding after the procedure and I had brown spotting for about 4-5 days thereafter, then it went away on its own.
I second the bloated/burning feeling you have for up to a couple of days, which you may not start feeling immediately, but may come after the painkiller wears off. So my advice is to stay on top of that and take painkillers before the pain starts to really bother you (which I neglected to do, resulting in a painful first 24 hours). I was feeling significantly better the day after though, and I think the bloated/burning feeling had gone away completely by the third day.
In all, it wasn't too bad. Not all that useful in my case, but it did show my tubes were open, which was a relief to know at the time.
