IVF questions...

Hi ladies. Planning IVF for later in the year and would love to stalk this thread.

Quick question, is it still possible for an ectopic pregnancy with IVF? I thought the chances of that were nill. My tubes are still there.....but one of them is blocked, while the other is supposed to be free.....but after 21 cycles ttc, we're not sure how good that one is either. If I still have my tubes there, could I still have an ectopic?

Hi Isi Buttercup
If you read back you will see that unfortunately this has just happened to Bugs. Like you I only have one tube my other isn't blocked but I am plagued by adhesions the nhs advised me to have my tubes out prior to ivf to prevent another ectopic ad my last one ruptured. I decided against this as it would have meant major surgery again for me. My private clinic said ectopics with ivf are rare but can happen but said chances were low as they don't put the embryos back with too much force. I think it's something you need to think seriously about before you make your decision. Good luck x

Hi Isi Buttercup, As you can see I have just had an eptopic on my 1st IVF attempt. The way the consultant described it to me is that when they put the embryo's back they float about for a while before imbedding so if you have healthy tubes they will float in and then back out and hopefully imbed in the uterus or not at all but unfortunately like me when there is not a total blockage but damage in the tube the embryo has got stuck and imbedded there. I don't think this will happen in every case but I don't think eptopic's is rare. My clinic did not appear to be shocked by it and by choosing to have them both removed at least I know that won't happen again. But it is more difficult for you I was put on the spot and had to decide right then what to do, I had come to terms with the fact my tubes were knackered along time ago so I actually feel really confident for next time but if I had to make the decision before I had the eptopic I'm not sure what I would have done. I don't know if your cycles are NHS funded or not we have to pay for ours so I couldn't afford to pay another £4500 for another eptopic so thats another factor I had to consider but ultimately it's your decision. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask as it is so helpful having someone who's been through it to talk too xxxx

Thanks so much, Oneday & Bugs. And I'm so sorry about what happened to you, Bugs :hugs:. We're not funded, so this is all coming out of pocket for us.....and I'm so weary from surgery (a myomectomy 2 years ago, and ankle surgery last year....not to mention a laporoscopy in February), that I think I'll just pray and hope for the best.

Bugs, will you be trying again soon?

Congrats on your pregnancy, Oneday. I bet you can't wait to see your bubs.

Isi- There is actually a increased risk of ectopic with IVF, due to the fact that the embies are put straight in the womb but sometimes still float elsewhere.
Personally if u i had a blocked tube i would have it removed before investing all that time, emotion and cash on IVF. I feel relief that i have no tubes any longer as i couldnt bare to go through that again. It is a personal decision only you can make tho.

Bugs- hope u are recovering well.

I just got called back from the fertility clinic at last! she said i need my GP to refer me to them and that my bmi needs to be under 30 so im going to wait till i lose my weight and then make a appt cos we cnt even go on the waiting list till i have lost this weight. I will have got to under 30 by xmas and then we will be able to have IVF in the spring next yr, which is what we wanted anyway. I need time to recover from this year and live a little. Iv been job searching again an im concentrating on my diet now :-)

xxx

Africa Queen we may be buddies next year then, I know they say to give it 2-3 months after a failed cycle but after the surgery i've just had I might leave it now till after Xmas. Also my acupuntarist let me into a little secret she said that success rates are slightly lower around Xmas don't know if it's the weather makes you feel miserable and less positive or the stress of Xmas so I think we'll start again late January so I can enjoy the festive period coz I think if it were to fail before Xmas it would be really depressing. We've also just booked some flights to go away in Sept for 10 days so thats something to look forward too.

Also my friend has unexplained infertility and it took a few months to get her appointment at the womens but she's attended the open eveing and done bloods so it was really quick she was told there wasn't much of a waiting list so you shouldn't have to wait too long !!!

Thanks everyone for the support and well wishes it means a lot xxxx

Thanks ladies. I'll wait till I get back home and have that discussion with my Doctor. Really don't want to go down that surgery route again . Will see what he says.

Thanks girls :hugs:

Bugs- Yes i have heard that winter is not the best time to do IVF. It seems success rates are higher in the spring/summer. We will be starting in the spring all being well :-)
Glad u are ok. When we get our babies, they are going to be spoilt lil things. lol

Isi- How was ur holiday?? I have a job interview on tuesday so if i get the job, me and dh are going to go away for our anniversary in dec. We never managed a honeymoon so it will be a honeymoon/anniversary break. lol. Yes think ur best to discuss with ur RE and see what he/she says but i wouldnt want u to go through IVF for it to end in another ectopic xxx

Thanks Sarah :hugs:. I'm actually still on holiday (it's a long one, huh :haha:). Missing my DH like crazy though. That will be so great if you and your DH can go on holiday later. Good luck with the interview!!!
