I read a post on here not long ago and one of you ladies mentioned how bad Johnsons baby products are.
I have been using bed time baby bath since chase was a month old and never thought about it being 'bad'. But now I am paraniod that I am doing something terriable by using the products.
Any one tell me why they are so bad and what you use instead?
TA!

Bad??
Iv been using bedtime bath and bedtime bath lotion since he was about a month, I also use johnsons, oil, shampoo, lotion, top to toe wash, bath wash (not all at once but thats just what iv used in the past)
Iv never found anthing bad with them, they dont dry his skin out or make him have a reaction and I keep stealing his bath stuff because it smells lovely.
Maybe others have had reactions like dry skin or rashes or those that had exzma (sp?) have had problems but I dont know of any general badness with it.

here's one of many sites I've found about this subject: https://www.productalert.ca/news/johnson-johnson-baby-products-bad/

please also read the comments after the article, they are very informative too.

other options: organic, natural baby products. or you can make your own baby soaps and shampoos.

I use aveeno baby products, only because I know how well they work for me - but we used J&J for the first couple months because we got the gift sets, and they worked just fine, and smell fantastic :) (but the aveeno stuff smells better IMO)

aveeno is also made by johnson and johnson too. lol sorry random fact

off to read that article

I wouldn't take much notice of that article that was posted earlier. Tbh in almost all man made products you could look up the ingredients online and find an article that tells you they are BAD. We can't avoid everything that is bad or we would never do anything. I don't use j&j because they test on animals which I'm against.

Well I take notice, and if there are other products available that are NOT full of unnecessary chemicals, of which there are many, I'm going with those.

I used J&J products on my older 2 when they were babies (they are 19 & 15 now) and they have never had any skin problems or health problems due to that fact and that was in the days we used to use talcum powder too!

The only thing I will say anything against is their shampoo. It makes Hollie's cradle cap worse so I switched to Boots' sensitive range and it's almost cleared up!

i got a few bottles of bed time bath and a gift set off people when LO was born and she's be totally fine with it! i didnt know it was tested on aniamls though , so i wont be buying any myself now because of that!! what brands arnt tested on animals, just for future reference. xx

As with everything, everything in moderation. I wouldnt recommend you have a whole J&J bath routine using every product possible but you're not going to damage your LO using the bath wash or talk.

As for the link above, I agree with Kiwimama, every man made product is going to have some kind of chemical in it. I appreciate vanessayagini's opinions and choices but J&J have been around for decades and I've never heard of mass chemical burns or allergies due to their products. You will always get a baby who has a bad reaction to the product but you would get a baby that has a bad reaction to homemade natural things

hiya my son has very sensitive skin and when using the johnsons products came up in massive rashes on his back and legs.
I took him to drs and she said it was the johnsons as they have harsher chemicals so he now has medicated stuff and i use simple products.

If your baby can handle it i dont see why not.
xxxx

I dont like johnsons and try and not for natural products as I've her some pretty nasty stuff about it too x

I don't personally use it on Lachlan because my skin has flared up really badly from their products before, and wouldn't want to risk it happening with him. I use organic baby bath on him (Gaia Organics and Ecostore, I don't know if these are sold in UK...but they're sold in Aus!) :flower:

I've been using Johnstons products on my LO since he was a week old or since birth if you include the baby wipes, he's never had any problem with them and his skin is in perfect condition. Most baby products contain chemicals and that includes natural products as they still need chemicals to keep them from going bad or seperating etc.

I can see that if your LO has a reaction to using baby products why you wouldn't use them but in my opinion at some point when the babies grow up they are going to want to use perfumed/chemical full shower gels and bathroom products so their skin might as well get used to it now rather than waiting until they are a teenager and it giving them a reaction because the skin hasn't come into contact with chemicals before or giving them acne which could scar them or something.

Also I use perfumed shower products on myself and LO comes into contact with those everyday when I hold or touch him and I guess that most people are the same. These products never did me and my brother any harm 24 and 21 years ago (we don't have one allergy or health issue between us!) and if people have been using them for that long then they can't be that bad really can they?

Omar got cradle cap frm Johnson's shampoo & allergy frm the lotion. But I love their baby soap- (it clears his drooling chin spots), & baby oil is very mild.

my baby is eight months old and use the shampoo and bedtime wash every night also use the wipes....she has never had any kind of rash or dry skin, no cradle cap and no nappy rash.
As the above post i wash myself it whatever i want and use perfume and breastfeed and so far so good, i guess if your baby had sensitive skin u would be careful otherwise i think go for it! smells lush!

I stopped using the shampoo as LO got bright orange cradle cap and it has started to clear up now, but I use the baby bath and talcum powder, I find it stops his bum getting sore.

Johnson's wipes make my skin sting, so I was never going to use those on Adam. I decided that cloths/cotton wool and water were fine for the first month, and after that I use organic body wash on him in the bath (Little Me Organics, it is lovely, smells of lavender). The only lotion he's ever had on him is sun screen. He has perfect skin anyway, so I don't see the need. When he was younger, he did have dry skin on his head and a touch of cradle cap, but that cleared when I put on some olive oil. We do use disposable baby wipes, but not many (I prefer cloth wipes and water) and the ones I get don't irritate me. (or him, nothing seems to irritate him!)

Isn't the incidence of allergies rising in the general population, including in those of us whose mothers used chemical-laden lotions and potions on us, even though we're 'fine'? Also aren't incidences of certain cancers rising (although yes, I know, the population is aging which could account for some of that)? Personally, I think it's quite a co-incidence that we start using millions of chemicals and things like that go up (I know there are probably other causes too).

Yes, Leyla may choose to use chemically things when she's older, but I think it's lifetime exposure to certain things that is important and I'd rather reduce that while I can. Also, baby skin is a lot more delicate than adult skin so I don't want to 'get her used to' chemicals now while she's at her most vulnerable. That's like saying she's probably going to be around cigarette smoke at some point as an adult so we should get her used to it now! Babies' bodies take in a lot more of the bad stuff than adults do.

It is entirely possible to avoid nasty chemicals as an adult and a baby but if you're only going to do one, I'd avoid them as a baby.

It's just johnsons can be quite harsh on sensitive skin. My LO got a sore bum after using the bubble bath and her head went dry after using the shampoo but she likes the bedtime lotion and i used the oil a couple of times and it was alright but i use olive oil now instead as it is SO much better. The only thing i would say never ever to use is the baby soap in the bars. I got this in my eye once and good god it hurt. I seriously thought i was going to go blind. It was bright red for days after and i in no way have sensitive skin or eyes.
Oh and i also used the sensitive wipes out once and they made her bum a bit sore. It really just depends on your LO.
For her bubbles i use methodbaby squeaky green bubbley bath and some olive oil after and just plain water for her hair. Cotton wool and water for her bum and huggies pure wipes for when we're out and a bit of bedtime lotion if shes not screaming when i take her out of the bath (shes a little water baby! :haha:)
