Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting so nice to meet everyone. First a little about myself. I am 31 and DH is 32. We have been TTC for 18 month now with no luck. We have had almost every test in the book done (e.g. Sonogram, HSG, Post-coital, day 3 test, sonohysterogram, SA) and everything was normal until yesterday we finished the sonohysterogram which discovered several uterine polyps. I was a little surprised that the HSG did not find these polyps and only the sonohysterogram did. The only reason I did the sonohysterogram is because it was required that I do a mock embryo transfer before IVF. I don't know if I should have the polyps removed and continue with IVF if I was previously only diagnosised as unexplained infertility or should I get it removed and try natural conception. I don't even know why I developed polyps in the first place since I am not overweight (I am a fitness instructor), no high blood pressure, and not over 50, which are the risk factors.

The only other possibility for my infertility is that I might have endometrosis since I have very painful periods with large clots, but the RE did not want to do a laparoscopy since he said even if it detected endo, it may not help with fertility and that I may end up going the IVF route anyways.

My questions are has anyone had polyps before and what was done about them? In addition, should I do a laparoscopy to determine if I have endo?
Thank you in advance for any responses.

Hi baby, I have not had polyps but I have had fibroids...you can do a procedure called hysterscopy, where they send in a camera through the cervix and can remove the polyps. I dont know if they can do it laprscopically, but if there is a suspicion of endo they yes they should look and see if they can remove it. I would change drs who said that he cant help, that might mean he doesnt have the knowledge to assist you. Keep in mind that endo can be removed and so can polyps but you must find a skilled surgeon. That is the key. Saying that you will sent straight to IVF is a bit premature and again I question his skills. Please look into this further. Good luck!

Hi baby4us2012, how did you surgery go to remove your polyps? Did you end up doing the laparoscopy too? I hope it went well. I am replying because I am in the exact same situation you were in a month ago. To give you some history my husband and I have been trying for 13 months and just found multiple uterine polyps through a sonohysterogram two weeks ago. We have also gotten pregnant one time (in October 2011) but it was a chemical. It only lasted about 4 days after I got a positive and it was a light positive. We have been through 3 rounds of clomid and finally decided to go to an RE which is where I found the polyps. My husband SA came back great, HSG was clear (although it said on my chart that I have slow spillage), bloods were fine.

I'm having surgery next week and I'm trying to decide between doing JUST a hysteroscopy or a hysteroscopy AND a laparoscopy. My periods have also been very heavy since the chemical pg and I have pretty bad cramps as well sometimes, as you mentioned. I don't really have any other symptoms of endo, except that I do get more bowel movements while on my period, but I also have also been diagnosed with IBS so that could be why as well.

My doc is giving me the option of choosing because he is on the fence about recommending a lap with the hyst. He said that endo really only affects your ability to get pregnant if it's really bad. And if I do get pg after the hyst it could help the possible endo get better. His philosophy was that sometimes it's better not to try to fix something that isn't broken. But he also said that a lap is a diagnostic test and could be good for me. I just wanted to see how your surgery went and if you did the lap? If anyone else has been through this experience I would really love your feedback!! Please! I am needing to make a decision in the next couple of days because my surgery is next week. Thanks! :)
