Just found out I'm pregnant while on Warfarin, anyone else?

How are you injecting? You need to pinch the fat while injecting into it and inject slowly.. Here they will take me off clexane and put me on a reversible blood thinner about two weeks before I'm due so they can reverse the thinning effect during pregnancy.

When I was on warfarin I was only on it for 4 mths because they thought it was probably caused by birth control pills. But even when cause is known doctors range from leaning you on it for 4-9 months here. Because the risk of having another is a fair bit higher than it otherwise would be in the year following the first clot.

You aren't supposed to have a scheduled section because having an operation on top if delivering and the hormones etc seriously compounds your risk for another clot.
If you have to have an emergency section - here like I said they switch me to a reversible blood thinner a couple weeks before delivery in case an emergency section is needed (I can't have the reversible the whole time because it causes permanent bone damage if taken too long but a couple weeks is fine) .. If I deliver premature on clexane and need emergency section my ONGYN said he had had experience operating on people on clexane before. Your dose will decrease to half what you are taking now once your clot goes and you are out if danger (ie they shift you to a preventative dose rather than a treatment dose) and my OB said operating on a preventative dose is way less problematic than a treatment dose so it will be ok.

The main thing is after the section the risk will be quite high. My OB said we will manage that with stockings that pump the blood for me, an IV hydrating me if need be and by forcing me to walk around a lot. Seriously get yourself a good OB who knows what they are doing in these situations and takes it seriously.

Thanks for all the info. My OH does the injecting and I hold a bit of fat (theres plenty of it!) but I've started bruising like mad, I'm black and blue and the skin actually hurts :(

We dont really get an OB, we get a midwife at our booking appt and then never see the same one twice :dohh: dont think I seen the same doctor or midwife more than twice throughout my last pregnancy!

Yep leg is fine. I was advised leg or stomach. Didn't fancy stomach much! Hardly hurts at all.

I might ask them and see what they say, my tummy is killing me! Dreading scans because its that sore :(

It gets better in the tummy, I barely feel them most of the time now. They do however still hurt in the leg. Feels like a bee sting, I bruise even worse in the leg too but I think some people find the tummy worse for bruising.

I thought the more we did it the easier it would become but we are already trying to dodge the other injection holes and pinching and injecting on a bruise is sore! Hopefully my tummy will get used to it!

Hey, congratulations on your pregnancy! Do you know how far along you are?

I noticed a couple of questions pop up and think I might be able to help as I've been through it all with my son (he was planned after my PEs).

You can inject anywhere that is ahem fatty. The tummy is an obvious choice, next is the thigh, but you could even try your bingo wings if you wanted to. I'm not saying you have any and as a self injecter I always wondered how I could actually reach there properly...

As for the delivery, well, if you are planning a natural delivery you will be asked to stop the injections as soon as you go into labour. Epis are allowed after 12 hours, as are spinals should you require an emergency section. I believe that an emergency that happens less than 12h since your last shot will probably have to be under general anaesthetic.

In my case we went for a planned section. I was on a very high dose of fragmin and there were a couple of other unknowns so nobody wanted to run the risk of needing an emergency section. Even just in terms of clotting, a planned section is much less risky than an emergency section.

One thing you might want to request from your midwife is a referral to a consultant. As a previous clotter you fall into a higher risk category. Also, they might want to monitor you more carefully since you were still on warfarin when you conceived. You can also ask your warfarin clinic to monitor you. They looked after me throughout my whole pregnancy along with their haematologists.

Wishing you ladies all the best with your pregnancies!

Thank you! Just found out yesterday I'm only around 5 weeks so far.

Thank you so much for the info, answered pretty much everything I wanted to know :flower: I was thinking about a planned section due to a horrendous and badly managed labour last time but then again I would really like my perfect labour that I was robbed of last time, at least I have plenty of time to think about it!

I do think they want to keep an eye on me more than usual, we only have a small hospital so will need to travel 75 miles to the hospital I gave birth in last time for all my appts but I don't mind it if they actually will monitor me closely because I'm such a worrier :haha:

75 miles! Wow, that's far! I can't imagine facing that trip wile in full blown labour...
Maybe you can have dual support? With my son's pregnancy I alternated visits between my local hospital and my specialist in London.

Great news that you're only five weeks along, too. From a warfarin risk perspective that must be quite a relief.

Anyways, good luck with everything! Do pop in when you have time to let us know how you are getting on.

I do my injection in my "love handles" lol. There's the most fatty part there for me *blush* be sure you pinch the fat, inject it very slowly and so not run it! As tempting as it is. Mine burns like a mofo. I take them twice a day

Myself, I'll be having a csection due to my heart and my past 2 sections
