to get an idea of distance I went to google maps.
According to wikipedia, the Tapas bar was 130 yards away from the apartment. That equates to 390ft.
Go to your home address on google maps. click on 'get directions' and choose somewher a short distance away from your home. Then, on the map, move the 'B' location pin til it is about 390ft away from your house.

It is roughly 8 houses away.

That, for me, makes it a 1 minute walk.

I counted the number of houses on the satellite view.
It was still to far away for my liking.
Certainly out of hearing range

Still, it's only a one minute walk not 10/15 as it has been suggested before. Still too far in regards to having children that far away nonetheless.

i think it's ridiculous too that nothing was really said about them leaving the kids, if it wasnt anyone else, well they would no longer have the kids!
Why didnt they just have them in buggys near the table? if they didnt sleep so what? thats the risk you take holidaying with young kids!
i dont like leaving LO to go for a wee, wondering what he's up to but that is too far! how can you enjoy yourself knowing your LO's are alone in the room?

Can Police in this country not investigate all these 'discrepancies' or are their hands tied because it happened abroad?

The Leicester Police were involved in the investigation as well - and it was actually them who suggested that the Portuguese Police looked at the McCanns more closely (it's all in the official investigation files)

They believe the same as the Portuguese, but they can't do anything because there is insufficient hard evidence to bring a trial in Portugal - just circumstantial evidence and no body, which is why the case was shelved

One thing that really bugs me is that the UK media all report endlessly that the McCanns were 'cleared' which just isn't true - the case was just shelved for lack of enough evidence to pursue a trial Even when it was shelved the Portuguese Authorities said that the parents had missed any opportunity to clear their names by refusing to co-operate fully with the investigation...

I mean if you are innocent and you really don't know what happened to your LO wouldn't you bend over backwards to help, even if you thought the questions were irrelevant or it was inconvenient?? I know that I'd crawl naked over broken glass if I thought it would help!

No, they were questioned more than once, but only once while they were 'arguidos' (which translates more or less as 'persons of interest') ... the transcripts of all their interviews (and those of everyone else who was ever interviewed) are all available online and make for very interesting reading. They were asked to return for a reconstruction and more questioning though and refused

I just did the 390 ft thing on goggle maps, and that has left me really shocked. My house is at the far end of an estate, to get 390ft away I would have to leave my whole estate (it isnt a small one either, I would walk past two blocks of six flats, then about 10-15 houses, a small garage area and then some maisonettes on one side of me, the other a bloc of six flats, a huge car park area and then a sort of tower block with at least fifty flats in), ounce out of the estate I would go past a huge shop, cross two little roads and get down by the hotel before I am 390 ft away, that would probably take me 10 minutes to walk.

Just did the google maps also, and I am very very shocked 390 feet would take me away from my house, past another 10 (on my side of the street alone), across a road and halfway up a hill to a primary school and would take me 13 mins to walk

As for the McCanns, I have never believed their story, and agree with most of the previous posters. I just hope the truth comes out one day for the sake of the twins.

Does any one think it is at all a possibility that either both or one of the parents did it purposely? I mean from reading little bits and pieces it seems that Kate seem to prefer the twins, maybe she thought Madeleine was ruining their perfect family? Or paid some one or something?

I don't think so Tasha. Maddy was an IVF baby so obviously very much wanted. I don't think they'd be that stupid either.
