March Mamas 2012 Baby Group (Closed Group)

im back,

does anyone know to tell the difference between 'sticky eye' and conjunctivitis?

R has sticky discharge on his right eye and slightly swollen eye lid. I cleaned the eye with cooled boiled water and cotton wool and it looked fine. no redness to the actual eye ball. I have just picked him up from his nap and the eye has gone all manky again.

other question is aimed at emera and kymied because they use reuseable nappies. Do you use flushable liners with newborn breastfed poo or are they only really used once the baby does 'proper' poos (ie weaning)?

hope everyone is having a nice easter weekend so far

Vitfa - no routine at all here and we're 2 weeks old today! He does seem to be awake in the morning then asleep over lunchtime whic seems to have happened since about a week old but the rest of the day/night is completely random.

I'm guessing your milks probably come in the last couple of days too, that's when we went through a bit of a difficult latch period cos boobs were so large and solid, I used to massage/ hand express a tiny bit off first to soften them which made latching and stating on easier x

Thanks lozza my milk came in day 4/5 although boobs dont feel large been express and massagit so reassureing to know we arent the only ones on constant demand. it feelmore like she is falling off

just off phone to midwife . little e has a rash alll overover body we think baby oil we used once 4dry skin
mitch i missed the wind technique

Vitfa....we used olive oil...it does a great job

MrsC, we use liners with our reuseables. I makes cleaning them so much easier. I do find that more poo gets on the baby than with disposables but I suppose tats because they don't wick as fast and would happen even without th liner...

Can't help on the sticky eye problem though but I know someone, possibly Waula, used a little EBM which helped clear it up really quickly.

thanks laura, i didnt realise you used resuseables too. im not planning on using them for a few weeks because is still have a load of nappies to use up first but was just wondering in advance

will try the ebm...

hi..yes...N had sticky eyes after a cold...cooled boiled water and then a bit of EBM - still not perfect but lots better - HV wasnt interested until they'd been green/manky for 4d :dohh: she did say it can help to massage the inside corner of their eyes in case its a blocked tear duct... xx

Got caught out today and had to feed in The m&s cafe. Couldn't get a worse table, right in the middle but I chucked a blanket over my shoulder, had a jojo feeding top on and a coat over the top so it was surprisingly easy. I'm lucky he's great at latching on first time, especially on the left and it was time for that side! My sis said you couldn't tell.
Mouse - I had 4 hour feeds at first. Rang the bf helpline who suggested he maybe comfort sucking rather than feeding so to watch whether he was swallowing or not. If not I unlatched him and was able to put him down. Took a while to work out if he swallowed or not!

We use a mix of reuseables and disposables. Mostly using disposables at night as the last longer before hey need changing and I don't like having to wake up A to change her. I like my sleep too much!

Mrs Cupcake - Jessica's eye went like that and it turned out ot be an infection. We now have eye drops for it. The doctor did say that because of the way babies eyes are when they sleep the infection build up behind the eye until they open it.

lozza - impressed with the outdoor feeding... i hate it. going to start expressing for when i'm out n about. i BF with a lot of pillows and just not practical to lug them about!!!! might have to practice bit more!!!

missy - how was the shower with ted?? intrigued! x

D has been screaming and crying since 1.30pm. She can't get her breath she's crying so hard. She's exhausted too, but won't drop off.

Regretting having chillis on my pizza last night just in case that's what's making her poorly. Wish I had some answers. Tried feeding (and feeding some more), winding in every which way possible, colic massage, infacol.

Not a good day

Waula, I bf with pillows too. Not sure if I could support her weight in my arm for an entire feed, and she's only little!!!

oh Loo...sounds like you've tried everything. poor you. hope DH is home to help...massive hugs to you both. you will get there hun. xxx

He's at work until 2am. Just feeding her again because I need something that will stop her crying. I've had a little cry but just made my head ache even more. Poor girl is breaking my heart. Just tried a double dose of infacol with this feed.

oh loo...i'm so sorry hun. i wish we lived closer. sending much love to you and calming thoughts to D. hoping she'll be so tired after this that she'll give you and her some rest. does she seem "windy"? xxx

We have used grape seed oil. see how it is in rhe morning.
Mutch how did m take to bottle and then back to boob? if u dobr mind me askinf
x
Eeekk my phone that should say mitch

loo could i post the colocyth out to you - im in town tmz could poat it 1st nxt day

x

Aw Loo, sorry D isn't happy and :hugs: can't offer any suggestions I'm afraid.

Waula - the midwife suggested I practice on a dining room chair before going out in public so that's what I've been doing. Definitely helped!

He's been awake since 6 and just managed to get him off to sleep after an hour of trying so actually sat downstairs with the monitor on. Bliss.

good tip - thanks lozza... need to break away from the pillows/sofa combo!!!! xx

Loo...big:hugs:...i have no advice really...maybe a gentle massage...might get rid of some wind if thats whats causing the problem. Hope you get a good night x

Vitfa....M has a really good latch and bf technique..always has so that is pretty well established so maybe wouldnt have tried a bottle if we were struggling. Tried first ebm in bottle at around 2 weeks just a tester really.....she took to.it ok (obce hubby had got used to positioning her and bottle...ensuring no air) and also how far to push teat into her mouth...he was a little cautious. She took all 100ml of milk in 2 sittings over 45 mins so longer process than bf'ing...plus she seemed to.want boob soon after so dont think.there was enough for her. Sooooo no teat vs breast confusion which i thinks a myth if baby good at bf......but volumes of milk going to.be difficult to.assess. We just used avent bottles btw....got them with a steriliser starter kit

Cupcake I hated the disposable nappy liners as they always crumpled up by the time I changed the nappy! I gave up and just use fleece liners. F they get too pooey I rinse them under the shower before putting them in the nappy bin. also, was it you who's using talc? Nothing wrong with it, but I'd recommend you stop before going on to reusables if you are using talc, it builds up in the nappies and reduces their absorbancy. Same with nappy rash creams. If we get sore bum issues here we soak the fleece liner in chamomile tea and put it in the nappy wet. Sounds mad, but it works great. Its nott the wet that makes them sore at all its the acidity of their wee/poo. If its really bad soreness I'll put a wett chamomile tea bag in the nappy.
