March Mummies 2011

Yes, compared to South Africa, I imagine Canada would be cold - I have only ever seen snow once. We were in Canada in May 2005 though and it was lovely - the people were so friendly. I guess we want to know general stuff - like how life is for you and what the disadvantages of the place are. I also want to know about health care because I am diabetic and would need medication soon after moving there so would need to know how to get it and without being a proper citizen too. I know we'd have to get a new wardrobe to live there as we do not get anything suitable for snow here, but I know in Canada they are prepared for the cold - we have no indoor heating and I found the shops lovely and warm compared to outside when we were there (not used to taking clothes on and off everytime I went inside or outside again) We were only in Ontario and British Columbia - how is Alberta and which areas are mostly English and where would you suggest someone stayed and why?

Celtic baby laughs are so cute - can you post it? Will speak to Lucky.

Oh my gosh tankit I am so sorry! How scary! I do not blame you for wanting to move! We will pray for you!

I will try and post it,may need to edit it first lol

Oh you should check out British expact it has a forum on moving any were in the world I will find the link for you I used it when we moved to Australia

Alberta is definatly mostly English speaking. There are some small towns that have a strong French contingent and some neighbourhoods within the larger cities, but I have to say that this provence is very English. Of course, there are lots of other languages spoken throughout as we have lots of imigrants from other countries, but we are definatly English. I *think* that Ontario, and New Brunswick are stronger French and then, of course, Quebec is pretty much totally French.

As for medical stuff, I'm not sure how quickly the coverage would kick in. I know that my Brother was Type I diabetic and some stuff was covered and some wasn't. When he wasn't working then he was able to get government funding for stuff that wasn't covered but like I said I have no idea when that type of coverage starts once you move here.

I've lived farther north in fort Mcmurray as well, great community but even colder :haha: I love Edmonton and find the people generally very welcoming. I've lived here all my life (except for the 8 years up north) and can't imagine leaving

what type of work would you be looking for? that may make a difference to where you would want to move as well.

Here link https://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=56
It's linked to Canada but it has a forum for the ul and newzealand

Thanks for all the info. I am a veterinarian but would have to write an exam to practice in Canada (which would make New Zealand a better choice for me but my DH is more set on Canada) He is in information technology mainly as a developer. I could of course decide on a career change too, but then as what - I do not know. That is why we are still deciding as he would have to take on the earning til I could be qualified which would not be the case in New Zealand where I can work straight away.

Yes, I believe the further north the colder it is.

Thanks for the site Celtic. Did you use an immigration agency when you moved or did you do it yourself? We think to go to New Zealand we could possibly get it right by ourselves, but for Canada we would need help as it is harder.

Tankit We did it mainly by ourselfs, we used a agent for my dh TRA (trade asscesment) but did the rest on our own it's costly to use an agent but if it's looking hard to get the visa they could be worth the extra cost ours was a straight forward application. I say on the link I gave you, you could ask about using an agent versus not for Canada

Tanikit, Msarkosi (Mel) is Canadian aswell. A friend of mine emigrated from here last Nov to Canada (near Vancouver island i think). i know they had to have medicals amoungst alot of other things. It looks wonderful and they love it and would never consider coming home. Good luck xx

Brai, fingers x'd for you, whichever way you want it to go hun x

Sorry if i've missed anyone, hi to all xx

Sounds like you could work anywhere  Both my husband and I are in IT here but I think it's better in the larger centres (like Calgary if you were to stay in Alberta) for IT jobs.

Such a cute video Celtic! Hope you and DH are feeling better soon.

Well turns out unless we get a job in Canada we can't immigrate there and not sure how to get a job from here - apparently our careers are not on the wanted list there, so now we will try to head for New Zealand, but at least we found that out early. Course we may have the same job issue to get in there so if anyone knows how to get a job in another country without being there, please let me know.

tanikit my best guess would be to look on the internet and send a resume. let them know that any interviews would be over the phone since you live in another country. after i got my degrees i worked as a certified employment specialist for a few years. if you need anything i can help with let me know. i will help out in any way i can. of course i only worked with people who were homeless and had a severe mental illness since my degrees are psychology and sociology, but i still learned a lot in general about interviewing, making resumes, etc. never helped anyone get a job in another country though. and have been a stay at home mom for years now, so probably rusty. there is lots of help you can find on the internet with looking for jobs, making and posting resumes, interviewing techniques, etc. i have heard new zealand is beautiful, wish i could come!

Awwww Celtic v cute !!!

Just checking in everything is ok this end, Ethan has now started on Lactose Free milk, SMA Wysoy as prescribed by the drs, finally given into the fact he is lactose intolerant, hes has such a rough time of it lately i decided one day enough was enough and took him so see the Dr who thought the same, His poo went from being literally like water to hard stools in 24 hours, my only regret is i didnt take him sooner, this however has made him v constipated and even more hungry as he was on hungry baby milk and now hes back on normal baby milk basically so weve had to start weaning earlier than i really wanted to just so he is getting full, hes not really liking savory as expected really but he loves his porridge and deserts. Took him to be weighed today and he was 14lb5 :)

AFM, My appointment to go and see the consultant for my bowel prob since birth was meant to be Friday and i had a phone call 24 hours cancelling it until 6th July !!! :( I rang the Dr and im still waiting for her to get back to me but i know she will just send me A&E as she did this a few weeks ago and i didnt go because i just cant leave the kids and something tells me they will keep me in and i thought oh well im only going to have to wait another few weeks but now, being told ive got to wait until 6th July!!!! I think if she tells me to go A&E again ill just go.

Sorry for going on hope all is well x

Natty, my eldest is lactose intolerant, if i can help give me a shout :hugs:

Sorry you have to wait so long for appt, ridiculous x

Did he stay Lactose Intolerant then ? Dr said that he would grow out of it sort of thing, Finley was as a baby but v midly really and he grew out of it although it does make me now questions his bowel problem x

I had Paul at his 3 month check up with the health nurse to day he is doing great, doing everything he should be! She weighed him and he is 11pounds 10 I thought he be more than that at 12 weeks.
