moving on a milk stage

My LO is on Aptimal hungry baby milk (he is 9 months old) and has been since i stopped breast feeding at around 3 months.

Anyway i was talking with my friend the other day who's LO is almost the same age and she asked if i had moved up to the next stage as you can at 6 months.

I havent changed and she said that as the iron levels drop at 6 months, they need the next stage. LO still has 3x9oz bottles per day and eats things like spinach etc, so i was never concerned and assumed he still got everything he needed from the milk and what i was feeding him was merely extra.
I am sure i read this when he was 6 months and i made the choice not to change milk.

However, am i wrong, should he be on a different milk?

No they dont need to go onto follow on milk if they are on 3 meals a day and generally eat well. Theres lots of vitimins ect in his milk already. They sometimes say to women who are breastfeeding to add in an iron suppliment if there not weaning very well. Follow on milk is just a marketing gimmic in my opinion but it obviously wouldnt harm him if you did change x

There's no real reason to change over like pp says. We did with both of ours. I didn't really know better with dd and ds went slightly off first milk but took to follow on like a charm. However I'd have had no issue keeping him on first milk otherwise.

First stage milk is fine for the whole of the first year. There is no need to use follow on milk. Obviously there is also no harm in it if your baby gets on with it (and sometimes it is a bit cheaper and you get the tesco/boots points on it) but the whole iron thing is something the formula companies have blown out of proportion so that they can market follow on milk and toddler formula. At six months your baby will get enough iron from regular formula and from suitable weaning foods that contain iron.
