Anybody get or think its safe to get your nails done while you are pregnant? I want to get acrylic nails, but dont want it to harm the baby...anybody have any opinions?

I regularly had mine done throughout pregnancy and up to 39 weeks, then i had them taken off so it was easier to look after LO when she arrived :)

I cant see a problem with it? If its the fumes you are worried about then ask to be sat at the station nearest to the door or window :)

Should be fine, you are more at risk if you actually work there and endure the fumes all day every day. A trip there yourself should be fine.

Not sure if they are just being overly cautious, but my OBs office advises against acrylics or gels of any sort. The chemicals from them can (do?) seep into your cuticles and thus your blood stream. Even some of the polishes are not reccommended, though most are safe today. I would check with your doctor/midwife about this.

I do get regular manicures though, about every 2-3 weeks. I go to a salon that doesn't do gels or acrylics so the fumes aren't there and always sit at the station by the open window.

The local nail place here wont do false nails on pregnant women at all. They wont even paint your natural ones. I asked my consultant about it and she said it was because the nails are pourous (sp?) like hair, so anything you put on them is absorbed in to the body. She then ran off a huge list of the chemicals used in fake nails and nail polish...needless to say... I have been a bare natural throughout pregnancy because of this! :) x

i get my nail done all the time :) i acually do my own lol! but ive got lazy last couple months and now going to the salon lol x

I am a nail tech, have been for 10 years. The thing about your nails being more porous is crap, they just dont want to get in bother if something goes wrong. As long as you get them done in a salon that adheres to H&S standards regarding ventilation and they are done by a qualified tech(which in a lot of salons they are not) then you will be fine. Licensed salons will not use acrylic which contains MMA which has now been banned but smaller places still get it imported from China because it is cheap. If your tech uses an e-file then she/he should as standard offer you a face mask. Most nail polishes used now are both toleune and formaldehyde free and have been extensively tested. If I didnt know it was safe for me and my baby then I wouldnt still be working. The danger comes from inexperienced or not fully qualified techs not handling and using the chemicals properly.

@Marysr when nail enhancements are done properly then at no time does the gel or acrylic come into contact with your cuticles, lateral nail folds or your skin. Its one of the first things you get taught.

I get my nails done every two weeks without fail. I get Gels. My doctor said it was fine and my nail lady was doing nails until like a week before she gave birth and her baby was completely fine. I wouldn't worry hun.

Thats the problem.... the salons around here are all run by Malaysian/Vietnamese and Chinese...all their products are imported from China and do not meet EU standards. Only in the last week one got shut down but I think that was because they were illegal over stayers.
Bottom line is...I just don't trust all these chemicals.

I have been getting mine done every 2 weeks for the last 7 years and I haven't stopped since I got PG  I have been told that as long as its in a ventilated area then its not really an issue. I have been going to the same place since I was 20 so I trust the implicitly :winkwink:

I am still waiting for this damn so called 'glow' to hit me so in the meantime I am trying to make sure I make myself feel good, getting my nails/eyebrows/hair done are my guilty pleasure!

X

Dont get you nails done at a chinese salon..they have a very bad reputation over here too..and the stuff they use is almost 100% not safe. In the end if your not comfortable getting them done at the moment then you shouldnt as that will suck the joy out of it for you..best then to wait:thumbup:

I haven't been getting my nails done regularly but did get acrylics done for a wedding in the first tri.

All my midwife had to say about it was 'I like your nails' so can't see there being a problem with it :)

That said if you are really anxious about doing anything that you don't have to do I just wouldn't do it. No point in getting your nails done and then constantly worrying about it xx

In the UK you have to be careful where you get your nails done as over here products containing MMA are not yet illegal- which is dredful in my opinion!!

You can always ask you salon if they use MMA or EMA (the safe option) products, if they don't know then walk out!

And any salon that dont know what products they are using on you I wouldnt trust even if I wasnt pregnant.
